Ronar stared nervously out the window of the cramped shuttlecraft. Every star he watched streak by filled him with more and more dread. He hadn’t expected to be assigned on a deep space mission so soon out of the Academy. He’d assumed he would’ve gotten a nice simple posting on an old starbase no one visited anymore. Not very challenging work, he knew, but at least he wouldn’t have to meet so many people.
Turning his head away from the window, Ronar rustled through his bag and pulled out a small holophoto. He clicked it on and softened at the smiling figure of Evrilla. He’d met her a while back, at the Andorian Academy at Ka’thela. He’d taken a specialty semester studying Andorian engineering. The two had run into each other countless times before Ronar had gathered up the courage to speak with her. She was intimidating but they hit it off immediately and stayed in touch even after Ronar went back to Earth. It had been over a year since they’d last seen each other. It seemed longer.
Shoving the holophoto in his pocket, he watched as the shuttlecraft approached the Atlantis. A lump formed in his throat at the sight of the hulking ship. Ronar swore he could see his petrified face reflecting off the shiny hull. He considered hijacking the vessel and piloting it back to Earth but the lump in his pocket dissuaded him. That and his unwillingness to be charged with desertion.
Ronar jumped as the shuttle bumped to a halt in the docking bay of the Atlantis. Taking a deep breath and heaving his bag over his shoulder he stepped towards the door.
“Well, here goes nothing.”
The docking bay was a monotonous grey that seemed all-enveloping. He felt smaller somehow. The feeling soon dissipated as he spotted the familiar figure of Evrilla, her white hair and blue skin standing out in stark contrast to the bleak grey.

“Ronar!” Evrilla jogged over to where he was disembarking, opening her arms. “It’s been so long! You look great!”

“Evrilla!” Ronar exclaimed, hugging her tightly, “God, it’s so good to see you. I thought I was going to go insane. How’s Tatyl? I have so many questions!”

“She’s good, she wanted to come but she’s in class.” Evrilla squeezed him once, then stepped back. “The top of your head still looks the same,” she commented with a smirk. “And just as curious as ever.”
“Haha, very funny,” Ronar jabbed her playfully in the side.
She made grabbing gestures towards his bag. “Hand it over, we’ll talk as we walk.”
-Evrilla, CMO
“I’ve got to say, the thought of being on this ship terrifies me,” Ronar confessed as the two headed out of the docking bay, “It’s not that I’m not prepared, I’ve just never had so much responsibility. Not that it’s that much responsibility and I know I can handle it…” he trailed off, “I’m rambling again, aren’t I?”

“A little.” Evrilla strolled through the halls of the ship, heading towards Ronar’s quarters. “Don’t worry. It’s always scary to start something new, and I know this isn’t what you were expecting.”

“It doesn’t matter much anyway,” he deflected, “So, tell me about the ship. How’s the Captain? She sounds intimidating…”
-Ensign Ronar

Evrilla grinned. “Well, there are lots of kids here. They certainly keep Tatyl busy. Your department head is human, name’s Nash. He’s very straightforward, you’ll like him. As for Captain Bordeaux… she’s great. She’s kind, reasonable… I trust her.” Evrilla watched Ronar for a moment. “She wants to meet you actually. We’re going there for dinner after your quarters.” She smiled sheepishly. “I might have talked you up when I found out your assignment.”
-Evrilla, CMO

“Well, I hope I can live up to her expectations,” Ronar grew quiet as he took in the interior of the ship. It was, as he had assumed as he was arriving, very nice. Everything seemed shiny and new. Either Captain Bordeaux had a tight grip on the cleaning crew or the ship was very new. Probably a little bit of both. He took a moment to pause and examine the LCARS display embedded in the bulkhead.
“This ship is advanced,” he marveled, clicking through the ship’s systems, “Some of these functions were only talked about at the Academy!”

Evrilla shook her head playfully. “All the same, you tech heads. Flash something shiny that says error, and you’re happy for a few hours.”

“This may be less stressful than I thought!” Ronar joked, “Do you think we’ll have time to head to Engineering before dinner?”

Evrilla checked her PADD. “If you like, or I can take you tomorrow. You might want to shower.” She wriggled her eyebrows playfully.

Ronar elbowed her in the side and laughed.
“If you’re saying I’m grimy I’ll have you know I haven’t touched any couplings in weeks!”
He tore himself away from the console (not without giving it one last longing look) and continued down the corridor.
“Tomorrow is fine though,” he continued, “I guess I should probably meet the Captain before I go snooping around her ship.”
Eventually, Evrilla stopped him in front of a plain door which only indicated that it was his cabin by a small label engraved with the name “Ens. Ronar”.
“Will you look at that,” he marveled, “They even spelled my name right.”
