The shuttle bay echoed with the usual hustle and bustle, arrivals and departures, cargo deliveries, the life blood of a Federation Starship preparing for deployment. Having recently arrived, Albert had paused in the middle of the bay to soak up the atmosphere, somewhat oblivious to the sidelong looks, stares, and meaningful coughs he was receiving from members of the deck crew as they were forced to divert around him.

“Ah!” He declared aloud, “Fascinating!” He took notes on his PaDD as he observed the reunion between two NE’s long separated. He didn’t need the PaDD but had long since found it made the mortals more comfortable if he pretended he used their technology to record his observations.

“Move it or lose it, meat head! What are you waiting for, an invitation!?” The bellow came from a man wearing the yellow of Engineering on the far side of the shuttle bay, but came with enough force from those lungs to be clearly heard and in response to the bellow, the tide of NE’s between he and Albert seemed to part as it headed for the lone man in Science Blue standing in the middle of the bay blocking people from moving. It was all the more impressive as that man had the stub of a cigar sticking out of the corner of his mouth yet it didn’t appear to hinder him at all, it was like it was part of him.

With a sigh, he put away the PaDD and turned to the NE that had been waiting patiently to get past him. “Ah, how helpful, could you please direct me? I believe I am meant to report my arrival.” Having received a rather exasperated series of directions, Albert set off, meandering along various corridors, taking in the feel of finally being aboard a Starship as he had been pushing for ever since he had joined Star Fleet. After all, where better to learn?

Arriving at the correct door, Albert hit the chime and waited patiently for a response, mentally filing away all he had observed in his brief time aboard.

“Come on,” Kelly yelled out focusing on the console instead of the door chime which coincidentally had rung just as Kelly had slammed her coffee cup down on the desk. The come on through a muffled door would have been almost unmistable for come in by the other person on the other side of it.

On hearing the muffled response, Albert thumbed the door switch and stepped in to the office, arranging his facial features in to the warm, friendly expression he had practised, using an instructional video titled “how to make friends” and a mirror.

“Lieutenant Albert, reporting for duty!” He said brightly, hoping he had got the modulation of his voice correct, vocal cords were still something he occasionally found tended to have a life of their own in stressful or exciting moments.

“If you think I have the time for this now you are bat snot crazy,” Kelly replied hyper-focusing on the screen. At the angle, she was sitting it was impossible for Albert to know if she was talking to him or at the person on the screen. Her long blonde hair was also down covering the small pair of earphones she was wearing in her ears. “I am a busy woman. My time is precious and you are just going to stand there are say that!” No matter what was being said to who, it was clear she was still angry and frustrated.

Walking up to the door of the Captains office, Rand had in his hand the Intelligence Report that she had requested earlier. Noting the door was already open he frowned and paused before entering, seeing that a person was standing just inside the door. He had also arrived just in time to hear Kelly’s rant. “Nope.” He said and shook his head, then turned and walked away. There would be time for reports later.
