Kelly walked over to the small kitchen area and lifted a lid to one of the pans simmering on the stove. “Hey, babe can I,” Kelly called out picking up a spoon before feeling a hand wrap around her waist and kissing her cheek.

“Go make sure the table is set and just hang out there. Absolutely,” Ian nodded and pushed her out of the way finishing her question with one of his own. While Ian trusted Kelly with his life, he did not trust her with any culinary exploits.

“You know I can do more than just sit around drinking before Evrilla and Malcolm arrive,” Kelly let out a laugh taking a seat at the table and taking a drink of her beer.

“Yeah but should you? Should you really,” Ian teased his wife blowing her a kiss. He had to wrap up dinner. Malcolm and Evrilla would be here any minute and he did not want to be actively cooking when they arrived.

Kelly and Ian Bordeaux

Ronar stood outside the door that Evrilla had led him to. He was excited to meet the Captain and finally start his new life aboard the Atlantis but whatever thrill he was feeling was buried beneath many layers of nerves and (going even deeper) distrust. It had been a long time since he’d ever encountered a leader who stabbed him in the back but still, even years after the end of the Occupation, his hand still shook whenever in the presence of a superior officer who had his life in their hands.
‘Chill out, Ronar,’ he told himself, ‘Evrilla said the Captain is a fine woman. She’s nothing like the Cardassians… probably.’
“Well,” he said, taking a deep breath and pushing his hesitations out of his mind, “Here goes nothing!”

The chime of the doorbell was not the typical three soft chirps of most doors. Instead what rang out was the bong-type sound of an old boat horn used most often when ships at sea were lost in a thick fog. Inside the room, there were muffled sounds of someone coming to the door and at least two people talking.

He pressed the buzzer to announce his presence and curtly marched through the door once he was given permission to enter.

“Well I don’t know who changed it but I am sure it had to be Jacen or Ethan as payback for the field trip or the E-dog comment,” Kelly yelled over her shoulder as she opened the door. She was dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a green t-shirt that said Captian of Shenanigans.

“Captain Bordeaux!” He exclaimed, his arm shooting up to salute her, “It’s an honor to meet you.”

-Ens. Ronar

Kelly let out a small laugh seeing the Ensign saluting her and the bold greeting. Looking over her shoulder at Ian, she waved a hand at Ronar. “No more Wednesday night poker games with you and the senior staff,” she yelled at her husband. A bout of laughter erupted from Ian in the back of the room letting Kelly know Ian and what she referred to as the boys were up to something.

Turning to face Ronar the amused smile and shaking of her head showed that although she was sharing a private joke of some sort with her husband, Kelly did find humor in it. “At ease Ronar. We don’t salute much around here…or ever really. Come in come in,” she gestured with the beer in one of her hands and stepped back from the door.

“Sorry about the bell. Engineering on this ship is not as straight-laced in their downtime as in some places. That bell was payback for something I did to them. Just wait until you meet Nash and Drayke. You will see,” she laughed moving father into the space.

“I’d be willing to take a look at it, Captain. After I check in with Lt. Commander Nash, of course.” He stepped inside, finally able to take a good look at his surroundings.

“Belay that ensign. I could end up with the goat bleet if you involve Jacen or Ethan,” she laughed. “But by the end of dinner I will come up with something sufficiently evil to pay them back for you to do.”

“Good God woman leave the ensign alone. He just got here and the last thing we need is for him to use you as the reason he needs to see the counselor,” a voice yelled from the back of the room.

Entering the room, Ronar would see the place decorated in mainly blues, whites, and grays. It definitely had a nautical feel with several large paintings of the oceans and ships adorning the walls. The room however was definitely not austere in the atmosphere however with an enormous wall PaDD along one wall and a shelf with the two gaming consoles, the Playstation22X, and the F-Box, under it. While not messy, there were the typical things associated with one actually living in a place scattered around.

“Hey Ronar,” Ian walked across the room with a towel over his shoulder and his hand extended. The area from which Ian came from and the towel over his shoulder indicated he had been cooking. “Nice to have you on board. Hope you aren’t a vegan. We made steak but if are I can whip you up something else. My parents just sent us a freezer crate of beef and I was dying to break into it.” Ian was dressed much like his wife, very casually in a pair of jeans and a graph tee shirt with the wording Trust me I’m a Dr. and then below that in smaller letters pepper.

“Oh, don’t worry,” Ronar said, accepting his handshake, “I’m not too picky with my food. I’ve had to be flexible with my palette so I’m alright with whatever.”

“Aww baby you could have cooked,” Ian winked at his wife.

“Ian for a diplomat you have an uncanny way to not say the right thing,” she teased Ian.

Kelly walked over next to her husband and slid her arm around his waist. “Ian’s family has a ranch in Lousiana. What can I get you to drink? We have pretty much everything and it is not synthahol. Just a warning.” Kelly could not help but instantly like the newest addition to the crew. He had come highly recommended not just by Fleet but also the CMO. Kelly didn’t pay too much mind to all the commendations and service records of the crew that was assigned to the ship. What she cared more about was the word of mouth and references and both of those had been glowing about the new officer.

Kelly and Ian Bordeaux

“I’d love a water. I don’t really drink much anymore. At the Academy… well you know what cadets are like.” He chuckled.

Kelly did not hide the look of shock on her face. It was not that her crew were a bunch of certified barflies but they did tend to imbibe probably a bit more than other senior staffs. “Sure,” she let out a laugh and moved to the replicator. “Fancy water or water water,” she asked standing by the machine.

“Just plain, old water. I’ve found that nothing can beat it.”

He felt safe in their quarters which was not a feeling he was used to. The nerves that had been building up inside him only minutes before were completely dissipated. The Captain and her husband seemed like nice people. Evrilla had been right. He would have fun here.

“Your ship is lovely, Captain,” Ronar gushed as he sat down at the table, “Some of the tech on this ship is just– just incredible! I was telling Evrilla on our way here that there are some systems on this ship that we only talked about in near-hypotheticals at the Academy. I can’t wait to get started.”

-Ens. Ronar

“That is entirely due appearing on the holoshow Nailed it last Christmas. I got roped into hosting and appearing on the show by Aedan Teller. He gave me an offer I could not refuse. Make a fool of myself on galactic television and he would upgrade the Atlantis with all the latest in entertainment. What was I going to do? I mean tell the crew I expect them to take a photon torpedo for me but I can’t bake a ham form them to get everyone on the ship a 70” holovision PaDD.” Kelly flopped down on the couch. She knew Ronar would have at least heard of the media mogul Aedan Teller. Who hadn’t? The man’s public side had his hand in every noteworthy philanthropy and he owned pretty much the only game in town in entertainment. Bang, Gaggle, Vaugh-Tellerland…the list went on and on.

“I remember hearing about that! I think Evrilla mentioned it in one of her letters,” he said excitedly, ” I don’t think I was able to catch it though, exams and all that… I’m sure you did very well though. They always seemed tough to do.”

“However no matter how dumb I looked on that show, at least I am not stuck listening to We don’t talk about Bruno a billion times a day because I was dumb enough to red light that kids movie.” Kelly toasted the air as if thanking the stars. “Sit,” she motioned for Ronar to make himself comfortable. “So what brought you to the Atlantis,” Kelly said and didn’t even try to hide the smirk on her face over the answer she assumed Ronar would give.

Kelly Bordeaux

Ronar took a seat on one of the armchairs and desperately tried to ignore how hot the tips of his ears had gotten. How come it was that captains always seemed to know your secrets before you told them?

“Yes, it was because of Evrilla, I won’t try to hide that,” he took a sip of his drink to cool his blush, “But I promise I had other intentions. I’ve always wanted to do deep space work, away from other people. Away from…” he coughed awkwardly, trying to hide his near slip-up. That was a story for another time. Maybe.

“Truthfully, I wasn’t too keen on the idea at first,” he continued on, hoping the two of them hadn’t noticed his error, “I prefer station work. It’s less unpredictable, but,” he shrugged, “You go where your heart takes you I guess. I’m sure your command path was a lot more interesting than my small CV. Yours too, Mr. Bordeaux.”

-Ens. Ronar

“Ugh,” Ian groaned flopping down on the couch and cringing. “Ian…call me Ian when you are in these walls or if you have a beer in your hand,” he raised his drink as if showing a visual. “Don’t make me any older than I am and you,” he turned the beer towards his wife. “Get out of the man’s personal life. Keep your questions for girl’s night out.” Taking a swig of his drink, Ian looked at Ronar. “So what do you like to do for fun?”

Ian Bordeaux

“No, no,” Ronar laughed, “It’s alright. It’s nice to have a commanding officer who takes an interest in their crew. As for fun?” He leaned back and let out an awkward laugh, “I’ve never been one for free time but Evrilla got me into Klingon opera and Kreetassan poetry recently. She has some… interesting tastes. She tells me there’s a great rec room on the ship though!”

-Ens. Ronar

“Rec dec six,” Ian nodded filling in the blank. “We tend to watch the game there every Wednesday. Boxing, football, soccer,” he rattled off a few of the more popular ones. “You should drop by. It’s a good way to meet everyone and lets the woman have their girl’s night.”

“Oh, I definitely will. I can’t play any sports if my life depended on it but they’re always fun to watch.”

“None of us are ever going to make the Fed NBA, Galactic NFL, or United MLB but doesn’t mean we don’t think we can,” Ian laughed. As with most rec sports, the participants in the moment pretended they were in professional basketball, football, or baseball with fancy holodeck programs but they generally did not have the skills of the professional players and simply were reliving t-ball, pee-wee football, or hoops outside their home from their youth.

“Ian and I went and saw the Shakespear in the original Klingon last time we were on Risa,” Kelly added. “It was an original take.”

“Really?!”

“Yeah and so much better than the English version. I mean who doesn’t love Shakespear when they use real swords and blood,” Ian took a sip of his drink.

“Everyone in the first ten rows,” Kelly let out a laugh. “So Ronar, tell us about yourself,” she got comfortable and tucked her feet up under her body.

Kelly Bordeaux

Ronar laughed awkwardly.

“Well, what else is there to say… I’ve been a fan of engineering since I was a little boy. I used to find old pieces of Cardassian tech to disassemble and create toy cars,” he furrowed his brow trying to think of something else to say.

“I like cats, I guess? Sorry, I’m not really great at telling people about myself. It’s not something I really did a lot as a kid.”

-Ens. Ronar

Just then, the door chimed again. The faint sound of a protesting child drifted into the room. “Amma, I don’t like surprises! Where are we?” Evrilla chided her daughter with a telepathic nudge, rolling her eyes slightly. “If I tell you it isn’t a surprise anymore.” The two had dressed up slightly, Evrilla having literally let her hair down (although there was a tie around her wrist in case of an emergency).
-Evrilla and Tatyl

“Doors open,” Kelly called out standing up from the couch and moving towards the door. Halfway to the door, she met Evrilla and Tatyl entering the room. “Hello ladies,” Kelly smiled at the mom and then bent over slightly to address the daughter. “Jessa is in her room if you want to go hang out there. Last door on that wall,” she inclined her head in the direction towards Jessa’s room. While the age difference between the two kids was large, Jessa seemed to really like Tatyl’s company. It was almost as if Jessa thought of the girl as a little sister at times.

Before Tatyl could make it out of the living room, another person suddenly appeared from the door Kelly had indicated. She stood looking at all the people in the room with a slight disdain on her face. Her eyes drifted to each adult and then to Tatyl. “Hey Tat,” she pushed off the door frame and made her way into the room.

Looking at Ian, Jessa raised an eyebrow as she saw the table set. “You don’t expect me to eat out here?”

“Well it is how civilized people eat. Were you expecting us to just lob food at your door?” Ian’s tone was sarcastic but no more than normal. Taking a sip of his beer he waited for her to respond.

“This place is far from civilized,” Jessa met his gaze with a pout on her face. “In the Galac,”

“Give it a rest sweetheart for just one night okay. One night,” Ian immediately cut her off before she could begin spewing how primitive and barbaric the Federation was and how enlightened and glorious the Galactic Union was. “Tomorrow you can tell us all about how you are far superior but tonight can we are going to have a quiet meal with friends.” There was a slightly testing quality to his voice. It had been a long few weeks and life was starting to settle into some rhythm which meant a few more rules and a lot more structure.

“Prejudice and hatred of those that follow the path result,” Jessa became more rigid in her posture as she developed that characteristic sing-song voice of her rhetoric.

“In not being the first one to get cheese sticks,” Kelly interrupted. There were problems in the Bordeaux household. A blind man could see it but they were adapting and Kelly was often the referee between Jessa and Ian. “Ten minutes,” she said nodding to the counter. “Take them and go but you got ten minutes.”

Jessa opened her mouth ready to debate a useless point however a small pull on her arm directed her eye gaze down at the Andorian on her right.

Tatyl tugged at Jessa’s sleeve. “I want cheese sticks!” She attempted to whisper.

For all the stress and headaches in this place, Tatyl and the other kids were a calming factor for Jessa, especially Tatyl. The young Andorian was sweet and innocent with a smile always on her face. It was infectious making those around the little girl smile too. Jessa was no exception. She could press the point with Ian and Kelly but for some reason, Tatyl seemed to be worried the cheese sticks would suddenly vanish. That possibility was highly unlikely to Jessa. Access to food was unrestricted and unlike home where meals were prepared at a set time, here you could turn a simple snack into a nine-course dinner.

Kelly gave Ian a side glance feeling as if she was again in the middle of a duel between Jessa the kid and Ian ‘Garrett’ Bordeaux. Taking a sip of her drink, she idly wondered if Jessa knew Pat Garrett had struck down Billy the kid. What she didn’t have to wonder was if they came again to a line in the sand, Ian would step across it as if it wasn’t even there if the situation called for it. Luckily Jessa decided melted cheese covered in bread crumbs was worth the price of stepping down.

Moving to the counter, Jessa picked up the plate and nodded for Tatyl to follow her back to her bedroom.

“What can I get you to drink,” she asked Evrilla moving to the bar.

“Whatever you have open is fine.” Evrilla smiled at Tatyl, tossing an absent play nice towards her.

“Ev,” Ian stood up and hugged the woman. “Dinner is almost ready. I have oysters Rockefeller ready if we want to move to the table.” Walking to the kitchen area, Ian pulled out a dish warming in the oven and then set it on the table. “Kelz grab the casa salads.”

While the food sounded extremely exotic it was relatively basic ingredients. Many people were not huge fans of oyster shooters which was a staple of Louisiana however when you Rockfellered them by baking and covering them in breadcrumbs and butter most people suddenly developed an affinity for what usually was viewed as unappealing.

“I wasn’t sure what you liked,” Ian said to Ronar, “so I have a casa salad with creamy balsamic vingerett, toasted walnuts, olives, bruschetta tomatoes, and crumbled gorgonzola. We don’t stand on ceremony here so pick out what you don’t like.”

“That sounds great!” Ronar raved, clearly intrigued by the dish, “I haven’t had much of a chance to explore any cuisine other than Andorian or Bajoran. It’ll be nice to eat something other than hasperat for a change.”

Evrilla waved at Ronar discreetly.

Ronar responded in kind, shooting her a smile which he quickly retracted in a self-restraining attempt not to strike up a long conversation with Evrilla and ignore his hosts completely.

“So how was your day,” Kelly asked Evrilla as she sat down at the table.

“Oh quite good, not too eventful. A colleague sent me a draft of their paper for review, so I read a bit. How was yours?”

The Bordeaux crew

-Tatyl & Evrilla

“Taking it day by day,” Kelly looked at Jessa’s room and then back to her friend across the table. “I was wondering however if we could rent Tatyl. You know on an hourly basis from 2 in the afternoon until 9 at night?” The joke was only funny for those having to deal with the situation. “We are starting her in school on Monday and that should be…fun.” It was clear the stress of the past two weeks were starting to bubble over from professional responsibility to personal ones. “How do you do it,” she let out a laugh forking up a bite of the salad. “I mean there are two of us and one of her and at times it feels like we need an army to keep everything in check.”

Jessa and Kelly

Evrilla hummed lightly. “There is a given value to a telepathic connection with your child, not to mention that I’ve had her since birth. It’s harder to start in the middle than it is to start from scratch.” She rested a hand on Kelly’s shoulder. “You’re doing well.”
-Evrilla

“I don’t feel that way. Some days are better than others but she never makes it through the night without a nightmare every two hours. It’s like having a newborn.” Taking a sip of her drink Kelly shook her head. “Enough though about the Bordeaux’s. Tell me about you two.” The smile on Kelly’s face was wide and devilish.

Kelly Bordeaux

“Oh, me and Evrilla go way back,” he nudged her playfully on the arm, “I met her on Andor when I was there doing my semester of specialization. I was a nervous wreck back then and she, for whatever reason, decided I was interesting enough to get to know,” he held up his hands in mock defense, “Not that I’m complaining of course.”

“Let’s just say the nervous bajoran boy rather stood out, and was far more fun than my other classmates.” Evrilla grinned at Kelly.

He was already feeling more at ease around everyone, opening up and willing to talk about his past. He was glad Evrilla had recommended him for this posting. Everyone here, or at least the few people he had met, were terribly nice.

-Ens. Ronar

Kelly could not help but smile at the couple. They seemed so happy and it was infectious making the mood at the table light and fun. Reaching over she clasped her hand over Ian’s and waited to hear more. Kelly could tell Evrilla probably had more to add. It was not hard to miss that she was more than excited to have Ronar on board.

Kelly Bordeaux CO

“We talked almost daily while seperated, and being in Starfleet together is too great of an opportunity to pass up, so I’ve been… badgering Ronar to put in for a transfer.”
-Evrilla, CMO

“I had to give in eventually,” Ronar rolled his eyes teasingly, “She just wouldn’t stop sending me messages! I’d wake up in the middle of the night to my computer pinging non-stop.

“I’m glad I agreed, though,” he added hurriedly, “I can’t wait to see what goes on on a starship. Anything interesting going on right now, Captain?”

-Ens. Ronar

“That is the understatement of the year but if Evrilla hasn’t filled you it, I at least am going to need a lot more booze for that story,” Ian got up and replicated more drinks for him and Kelly. Ian wasn’t sure what Evrilla had told him about the recent events however whatever she had would have been fine. Evrilla had become almost family to Ian and Kelly. “We are pretty laid back in our quarters so if you want something please feel free to replicate it.” Leaning over, Ian set the beer in front of Kelly and kissed the side of her head before taking his seat.

Kelly wasn’t sure if Ronar wanted to hear about the alien fiasco so she brought up a second topic. Whatever he and Evrilla jumped on they would talk about. “Oh but there is the annual five o’clock somewhere cruise,” Kelly took a sip of her beer. “That is when I find some real water planet and beam my sailboat to the surface. We drink way too much, play dirges, and take bets on who is falling over the side first. Since it is not the holodeck we do wear life preservers but it is so worth it. Ever been sailing before?”

Kelly Bordeaux

“Sailing!” Ronar exclaimed, chuckling, “I didn’t expect to be offered a sailing trip aboard a starship! I’ve been aboard a ship once or twice. I took a sailing course for fun at the Academy. Wasn’t very good at it…”

-Ens. Ronar

“You don’t have to be. There is plenty to do on the boat for a novice. I think we are planning this for like next month,” Kelly looked at Ian.

“Sure and it is not like everyone is going to want to come this year,” Ian said a bit more gruffly as he took a sip of his drink eliciting a slightly disapproving glare from Kelly. “You know for a diplomat he can at times have a hard time with a poker face.” Leaning towards Ronar from across the table, Kelly nodded to her husband as she spoke. “Never let him be bad cop. He can’t keep a straight face,” she let out a laugh.

“So are you two planning on any interdepartmental projects,” Kelly asked looking at Evrilla with a smile. While some captain’s frowned on spouses working together, Kelly encouraged it. She had always found it to be super productive. Even if Ronar and Evrilla were not married, the idea was still valid.
