Back Among the Stars (CSO Intro)

Posted June 8, 2022, 6:50 p.m. by Lieutenant Commander Audrey Emerson (Chief Science Officer) (Joana Ribeiro)

Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like on
A-Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me

The arrival at Starbase 1 coming in from Earth had always been one of Audrey’s favorite sights. For many, at the right time of the year, it meant the chance of having one of the best views of the Moon. For Audrey, it meant that she was free again. Free from the shackles of planetside life, from the uncertainties that came with living in an uncontrolled environment, and the claustrophobic feeling of having nothing but land everywhere she looked.

Audrey sighed, taking in the view. Soon, she thought, she’d be back in her natural environment. She didn’t know how her parents did it, after years of living on a starship, they had moved back to Earth and resumed their lives. Just like that. But then again, they were born on the planet. Audrey, on the other hand, almost quit the Academy. At least she found it funny that every time she mentioned it to people they would ask ‘oh, you couldn’t get used to life aboard a starship?’ to which she would reply ‘no, I couldn’t get used to life on Earth’. The look on their faces was always memorable.

Despite everything however, Audrey was not alone. With more and more children being born in starships it was getting increasingly common for a segment of the population to have to get used to life on a planet. Some would do it without a problem, others would take a little longer to get used to it. She was sure that her time would come as well. It just wasn’t the present moment.

Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

=/\= Shuttle SF47 Now Boarding Destination Starbase 157 =/\=

Soft jazz played through the speakers as the passengers settled inside the shuttle. Audrey stowed her duffel bag overhead, and a pet crate under her seat. Inside, an old white and ginger cat slept peacefully, lulled by the effects of a light sedative Emerson had given him moments prior leaving Earth. He had been the sole good thing that had come out of the trip. She had found him roaming around her parents’ backyard, and even though he ran away a few times, Audrey had finally managed to pet him after a small offering of bacon bits and the promise of a few more later. That’s when she had noticed that the poor guy had been born without an eye and a deaf ear. And that after what seemed to be a rough life on the streets of San Francisco, there was no owner in sight. With only a quick trip to the vet to get him travel ready, Audrey was hoping that someone on the Atlantis’s medical staff had some veterinary training, so that he could be thoroughly seen by them.

The stretch from Starbase 1 to Starbase 157 was the longest one on her trip, and as such the most boring one. After making sure that the pet crate was well secured, Audrey adjusted herself on her seat. She took one last glance at Starbase 1 before taking out her PaDD. She hoped not to be back for a while, and until then, she wouldn’t miss the place.

From the window of the small shuttle, Audrey smiled as the Atlantis came into view. It was a beautiful ship, and much bigger than any other she had served on.

She was still astounded that she had landed the assignment… that someone had thought that putting her in charge of a whole lab complex was a good idea. Especially after the incident on board the Santiago. That was a mess… Audrey suspected that had been why she had been stuffed in the Crusader for the next four years…

=/\= Ladies and gentlemen, we will be arriving at the USS Atlantis within five minutes. We will be docking on Shuttlebay 1. Please gather your belongings and make sure than nothing is left behind. Thank you. =/\=

This was it. Audrey took a deep breath and assured herself that she could do anything she set her mind to.

Having quickly changed into her uniform at her short stop at Starbase 157, Audrey donned proudly the traditional blue of the division she had been a part of for the last thirteen years. With her dark hair made into a braid, she was ready as she was ever going to be.

With a last look at the darkness of the cosmos outside of her window, she grabbed her duffel bag and the pet crate where her new companion was still sleeping peacefully. She smiled. At least someone hadn’t been bored by the trip. Or at least not as much.

When the shuttle touched down, Audrey was one of the first to leave it, having to stop for a moment to admire the sheer size of the shuttlebay. She had never seen anything like it.

With a deep breath she took in the familiar feeling of being on board a starship. A month away from the stars had already been too long. But at last she felt free again, and excitement ran through her veins. As her gaze focused on the door, Emerson started moving again. Beyond them lied the ship that stored the next chapter of her life.

Audrey couldn’t wait to start it.

In other words
In other words
I love you
