Change was a constant fact of life and like all things star fleet had changed. War had forced it to change, it had to get better at defending its own people. Nothing represented that change more than the star fleet Marine corps. If you had told an officer not 20 years ago that there would be a solely military organisation stationed on their ship, they would have laughed you off and reprimanded you for being to aggressive and yet here it was. Like a phoenix born from the ashes of the MACOs it had grown into an organisation of hundreds of thousands. Men and women who where willing to lay down their lives, like all other officers, but these men and woman where different. they where trained for nothing but combat, although some specialised in other areas. They where the sword of the federation while security was its shield.

And that sword had proved it’s worth defending the federation in countless battles, some more recent than others. For many in the federation one battle signified either the evils of the marine corps or their selfless commitment to those they served, Acheron. And the face of that battle, either its hero or its devil served in the heart of the Atlantis. In the centre of the ship in its very core, stood marine country.

The moment one stepped off the lift and into the hallways of marine country, you could tell it was different. Personnel milled about, as they did in the other areas of the ship but here their uniform was different adding dark green to the spectrum of division colours. Two guards stood in full armour facing the lift, their faces hidden behind the combat helmets so associated with the newest institute of the federation. There backs to a check point closing off the rest of the deck. A lone marine sitting in a small window.

Behind this checkpoint was the area commonly known as marine country the base of operation for the 24th infantry regiment. A space that stood as so many other areas did on so many other ships, basses and planets. A monument to the changes star fleet and indeed the federation, had been forced to make. An Area dedicated to waging war. And deep within this areas beyond the barracks, the armoury and the training rooms, stood the chambers of its commanding officer Lieutenant River Styxx, the Hero or (to some) the Devil of Acheron.

But right now she was at the checkpoint, a surprise inspection was the best way to know if her Marines where ready. But she also had another reason, she had contacted the new CIO. She had heard he had arrived and that he had a run in with primrose. His record was good, well the parts one could read, as with all intelligence most of his file was classified.

River was curious, an intelligence officer would be a good ally especially if he had an equal level of dislike for Perkins, Primrose and their lot. So taking the initiative she had invited him to Marine country for a tour, after all it would make sense to learn about as many parts of the ship as you could. It was also gave he and River a chance for a mutual exchange of information about a great many things. She hoped they would be of the same mind. Now all river was doing was waiting to see if he would actually turn up or not.

Peter stood in the lift, he was sheathing and unsheathing the throwing knife he kept on his right wrist, something he did when uncertain. It was the closest thing to a nervous habit he still had after nearly 30 years of joining the fleet. He might have planned a meeting with the Marine Commander, something more surreptitious like an accidental run-in or bumping into her in the hallway, a controlled environment outside marine country, but a tour wouldn’t be bad, getting a guided look at the only part of the ship he couldn’t really walk around whenever he pleased worked. He’d only worked with Marines twice in his career, once during his first foray into Intelligence work during the Dominion War during the Liberation of Betazed and again a few years ago during his personal mission to take down the Takra Cartel. He had never served on the same ship as Marines before, it would be interesting for certain.

Just before the door slid open he finally sheathed the blade with a smooth movement then clasped his hands behind his back and stepped forward. His eyes flicked between the two armoured guards for only a moment before settling his gaze on the woman standing at the checkpoint. A foot shorter than him but despite that she had an air of command about her, even if he hadn’t already seen her picture before he would have known she was the one in command here. He took a fow long strides into the hallway, keeping his posture relaxed but back straight and professional.

Peter stopped a few feet from River and looked directly at her “Lieutenant Styx, Peter Sigmundsson” He said putting out a large hand to shake.

As he approached the to marines on guard duty snapped to attention and saluted. This was followed by Styxx doing the same thing “Welcome to marine country Sir” she said lowering her hand and accepting the hand shake. “Before we go through I need you to sign in and log any weapons you’re carrying. You can still carry the, we just like to know what you’re carrying” she said respectfully gesturing to a terminal on the wall.

Once Peter had filled out the log book. River pressed a button and the security gate opened. Once He was through the gate shut and locked itself behind him. “Now that’s out the way let me introduce you to marine country.” River said politely “This is the hub for all marine activities onboard the Atlantis. We have our own barracks, mess hall, armoury and storage spaces. The entire deck is self sufficient and can be used as a command centre for the whole ship, should the need arise.” she explained. As they walked marines stood to the side and snapped to attention. The sheer number of races in marine country was mind boggling. There where Andorians, Vulcans, Humans, Bajorans, Catians and even an Orion. All wore the standard star fleet uniform aside from two differences the department colour was dark green and instead of pips each had rank markings similar to old US Marine ranks.

Eventually River came to the first room on the tour it was the Armoury. The armoury was a large room with lattice windows and weapons lockers of all shapes and sizes. Work benches were scattered around the room and in the centre was large worktop, a disassembled rifle resting on the top. Behind this stood Regimental Sargent Major Qrow, he was a tall muscular built man, with salt and pepper hair and dark blue eyes. His eyes seemed much younger then his appearance would suggest. However his exact age was difficult to tell as across his face where four diagonal scars going from his forehead to his lower jaw.

“Lieutenant Commander Sigmundsson may I introduce Regimental Sargent Major Qrow, my second in command and our quartermaster. If there a weapon he can fix or upgrade it.” River said introducing the the pair to each other.

Qrow like the other snapped to attention and saluted “Welcome aboard Sir. Its good to have a intelligence officer onboard.” he said respectfully
