After a moment he took out another box. This one seemed much older. There was some evidence of dust, it would be hard to tell how much time the dust represented but it was there. He opened the box with a tug. He pulled out two objects. “We obtained these objects of a trader who was in a distant sector of space.”

He offered two objects. One was a twisted piece of duranium the other was a heavy layered encounter coat… and old one. Any historical buff would almost immediately recognize it as an away team jacket of the 24th century… perhaps late 23rd Federation. Hammond watched her closely, “We only figured out the connection after scanning the hand weapon, the metal is not common in this sector of space, but it appeared both in this fragment and in your weapon.”

Rose started coughing up her wine, she stared at the two objects. “Where did that come from?” If her surprise was faked is was a better actor than most.

Kelly, while typically was an open book, was able to maintain a poker face when needed. There was no point in lying and saying she had no idea. That would waste time and make them both look like fools. “From our home sector of space,” Kelly replied to both without pausing. “May I?” With any luck, there would be an insignia printed on the label of the shirt. That far back in Federation history, people used ships’ laundry because of no replicators. In order to get the right uniform to the right person, everything was labeled. If not there was always the chance for a ship’s name. The Federation was a government entity which meant they cataloged every screw, bolt, shirt, and vent cover even though bleeding heart liberal snowflakes to battle-hardened warmongers alike seemed to forget that when they took to their soapboxes. For Kelly, it might mean a clue as to who was here before them. If that didn’t work, there was a chance of getting some DNA off the shirt. Much like hardware, Starfleet kept track of its members. If any DNA was on the shirt and it was worn by a member of Starfleet, there was a better than decent chance that the DNA could match someone to the medical databases.

There was nothing that obviously identifying with either item. The metal was too small to have any code or serial number present. The jacket was identifiable but clearly had been though a lot. It was exposed to temperature extremes and what appeared to be fire as well. A detailed scan from the ship-board systems might have better results then simply eyeballing it. The one upside was for some bizarre reason star fleet went through about 5 uniform changes in 20 years in the 2280 - 2300 and the encounter jacket was circa that time period, although it was equally possible that the jacket had been given or traded after that period of time.

Obsession much? Trainor thought to himself as he watched the Captain gaze over the jacket. Tenzing was trying to figure out what Hammond was after, but couldn’t put his finger on it yet. The man appeared to be keeping something from them, after omitting the box he had for all this time. The Ops Officer was a tad bit intrigued to know what had happened to that jacket’s previous owner, though he wasn’t sure he entirely wanted to know.

“Mr. Trainor scan for authenticity please and send the results to the XO,” she said to her operations officer. The man should have his tricorder on him and until she could get the uniform to the ship, it was far better than eyeballing it for information.

Tenzing nodded, then took out his tricorder. The Ops Officer was always up for making a new discovery, though something like this would be unheard of.

Kelly did not look at Cara but knew the counselor would be also analyzing Rose and Hammond’s body language with a fine-tooth comb. “How did you come by this and what happened to the occupant according to your historical accounts,” she asked the most direct question.

“There was not occupant, a trader years ago stumbled upon a small number of similar items. They had no particular value. The metal is remarkable, but too small in volume to have a use outside of research purposes. Likewise for the jacket, interesting construction and durability but again… no great intrinsic value. So we bought a few at a low cost and after a few weeks of examination shelved it.” He took a sip of his wine to create a pause.

He was examining them, curious at the level of interest the Captain showed. “Like I said, when we got an analysis of the weapon our computer flagged a match.”

Lieutenant Commander Trainor had continued to scan the jacket slowly while listening to their conversation. He wouldn’t be able to 100 percent confirm authenticity, though the tricorder could get them close enough to a hypothesis.

While the fragment was by no means complete, it was either the finest reproduction ever created or was an away team variant uniform from the 2280s. The material was consistent to the synthetic fiber weave common to Star-fleet construction regulations for clothing. The natural analogue was Xenylon which was selected because it is long lasting, impermeable, and resistant to stains and fire. Trainor suspected a highly trained person with a replicator could make the uniform but would have extreme difficulty aging it nearly 100 years convincingly.

GM

“Did they salvage it from a planetary area or derelict ship,” Kelly asked. If there was a ship it would have long since been picked apart to its durasteel ribs. That did not mean however there could not be something left from the ship they could use. If the ship’s crew or even a single occupant was here but made its way back home, maybe there was something in the historical records of thier databases that would give the crew of the Altantis a way to replicate that. The other part was not leaving anyone behind. There were probably no remains left with it being 200 years but even dog tags or a personal data journal would suffice. Right now the crew basically had no where to go and all day to get there so any lead could be followed.

“Well, there might never be an exact answer for you, Captain.” Trainor replied as he put away his tricorder. “The materials check out, definitely Starfleet.” The Operations Manager added. Tenzing wasn’t sure how the coat came all this way from Federation space, that is, if it was even made by Starfleet at all.

“One could also easily replicate the coat, though it would be a tad difficult to age the material to 100 years.” The Ops officer added.

Looking at Tenzig, Kelly tapped her comm badge. He was right but it was a weird coincidence to have it just pop up. =/\=. Jen sending you a tricorder scan. Confirm authenticity and cross match it with any vessels that disappeared in the same time it was not a piece of history. =/\=. As if an afterthought she added. =/\= send the scans to medical and see if by chance there is any residual DNA left on it=/\= It was a long chance but dinosaurs sat under rock and dirt for millions of years and at times they still found some.

The Commander raised an eyebrow. “They reported they were in a star system - the information didn’t say if they made planetfall. You have to understand that this information is a report that is over 100 years old and it wasn’t that thorough. But the officer taking the report indicated that he suspected they were scavenging on an unaligned world inside that system. We have no proof to that of course, and at the time it wasn’t really something that we were concerned about.” Hammond tilted his head in thought. “A hundred years ago this base wasn’t even an idea in the designer’s father’s head and our warp drives hadn’t taken us far enough to even discover the majority of the great races.”

“The interesting part of the story was the trader said he was drawn to the system by an unusual wave front… something we never saw before or since. It was described as an oblong recurring and looping on itself EM pulse. Mathematically it seemed impossible,” He described a wave that looked kind of like a rugby ball shape with six loops about it pulsing.

“But frankly so are you and, it and you are here.” He paused.

=/\= And are you holding a raffle about who is combing over to the base? =/\=. Kelly wasn’t sure if they would let her take the coat but there was a solid argument that since it belonged to them they could take it back. If she needed she would recite some of that historial and cultural significance loop hole everyone seemed to throw about when they didn’t want to give something up.

“This EM pulse is there any other record of it? Does it appear with any regularity,” Kelly asked.

Jen replied, =^= Delays are more due to an extended rock, paper and scissors element, Captain =^= There was a pause. =^= Data received. We’ll get back to you after an analysis. =^=
