The Ops Officer began scanning the surface of the planet and surrounding orbital debris and wasn’t that impressed with what he found. “It appears that some of the structures do have a power source, but it appears to be in a failing state.” Tenzing quickly noted that there wasn’t anything of importance in the orbital debris, then turned his attention to a notification on his console.

“Reading federation debris around this planet’s moon, as well as the nearby planet as well.” LtCmdr Trainor announced.

His antennae shifted, expressing some anxiety, when the Darkness was concerned. They could outrun them, in theory, but not if there were too many of them – and it would mess with their current ‘mission’ of investigating this area for signs of a way home. It was possible, at least to him, that if this is where the Darkness was that the hapless ship had fallen victim to the Darkness even as much as the potential stellar irregularity may have. Right now he wanted to have as low a profile as possible – even as much or as little as a Mythology class ship could. Granted in the scale of interstellar space we were just a blip, but ships had a certain interest in one another and those blips became very large very fast.

Jen had a couple of ideas around that however he wasn’t firm on that. He spoke to everyone there. “Speculations on the debris? Distance to the moon? Helm, prepare a dynamic escape and evasion course that would take us out at Warp 8.6 if needed. Course at your discretion based on any bogies.”

Jen, XO

Several courses were possible but most were bad, at this ‘depth’ in Darkness territory only a few courses lead them directly out of danger, the others sent them in deeper relying on their theoretical superior speed to eventually circle their way out.

Tenzing closed his eyes for a moment to wipe away the sudden rise in the tension he was feeling from those around him. “It’s also a possibility that the Darkness already knows we are here and are lurking to see our next move.” The Ops officer suggested. “If that’s the case, then they have the advantage… they know the area.”

“Our last encounter did not hold any subtlety in them. Watching us would be a new move for them,” Jen commented. It did not cancel out Trainor’s thoughts. It would simply add a new facet to their modus operendi.

Kelly looked at the readouts coming from the scans and took a sip of her coffee. They were all so hyper focused on the Darkness, what if there was another danger? “Can we get any kind of reading of weapons on the surface? Tenzig, scan the pattern of debris.”

At that type of scan, there was only one power source, only semi active, that had the energy level to project a force into space. However that didn’t mean items, like rockets, rail guns, and other items that weapons had warheads could be anywhere and be virtually impossible to scan.

“I’ve got a possible energy source on the planet that could theoretically maintain enough energy to fire something....” Trainor said. The Ops officer put the area he was scanning onto the main screen and highlighted the area he was referencing to.

Ominously the picture focused on a huge volcano, still active. There was some sort of base mid-way on the slope that was converting the natural energy of the volcano into a usable energy source.

Looking at her XO she expanded the debris field around the planet. “Looks like it is in orbit around the planet which is hard if it is destroyed outside the planet’s gravity well. If the ship was destroyed inside the gravity well then this pattern makes more sense.”

If someone did a movement correlation with every piece that was detected there could be a result. It would take the computer hours… but…

GM

“It’ll take us hours to put together the pieces of that ship, or the other debris for that matter,” Tenzing announced, “But if we brought a piece aboard and have our engineers look at it, at least we’d have something to work with.”

“Can we do a volume assessment?” Jen asked after taking in the thoughts. “I am wondering if the ship was destroyed at point A there in space and a shuttle or escape craft had gotten away and destroyed there near the moon.”

The volume assessment would require the same amount of work as the motion correlation.

He nodded to Trainor. “Beam us a piece that we can correlate with what we already know.”

Looking at the Captain. “Do you think the energy reading is worth checking out?”
- Jen, XO

There would be no issue with the transport and a item the size of a captain’s chair was beamed aboard. At first observation it was consistent with a star-fleet bulkhead circa 2270-2290.

Tenzing shook his head in response to the XO, “Looks like searching by volume would also take some time, but it appears there is a piece that I’m currently about to beam to the cargo bay.” The Ops Officer watched the transportation process on his console, verified the item, and returned his attention back to the XO. “Looks like we’ve got a small piece of a ship’s bulkhead.” Trainor began internal scans of the bulkhead, then looked back to the viewscreen.

“Our Engineers and Scientists could do more in-depth scans of the bulkhead, but it appears our energy source is coming from a volcano.” Trainor refocused the scan of the volcano and zoomed in closer to the source. “This is where the energy source is originating from,” Tenzing stated, pointing to the viewscreen.

OOC: Our science and Eng depts can create a thread to exam the bulkhead if they want :)
