The Ops Officer began scanning the surface of the planet and surrounding orbital debris and wasn’t that impressed with what he found. “It appears that some of the structures do have a power source, but it appears to be in a failing state.” Tenzing quickly noted that there wasn’t anything of importance in the orbital debris, then turned his attention to a notification on his console.

“Reading federation debris around this planet’s moon, as well as the nearby planet as well.” LtCmdr Trainor announced.

His antennae shifted, expressing some anxiety, when the Darkness was concerned. They could outrun them, in theory, but not if there were too many of them – and it would mess with their current ‘mission’ of investigating this area for signs of a way home. It was possible, at least to him, that if this is where the Darkness was that the hapless ship had fallen victim to the Darkness even as much as the potential stellar irregularity may have. Right now he wanted to have as low a profile as possible – even as much or as little as a Mythology class ship could. Granted in the scale of interstellar space we were just a blip, but ships had a certain interest in one another and those blips became very large very fast.

Jen had a couple of ideas around that however he wasn’t firm on that. He spoke to everyone there. “Speculations on the debris? Distance to the moon? Helm, prepare a dynamic escape and evasion course that would take us out at Warp 8.6 if needed. Course at your discretion based on any bogies.”

Jen, XO

Several courses were possible but most were bad, at this ‘depth’ in Darkness territory only a few courses lead them directly out of danger, the others sent them in deeper relying on their theoretical superior speed to eventually circle their way out.

Tenzing closed his eyes for a moment to wipe away the sudden rise in the tension he was feeling from those around him. “It’s also a possibility that the Darkness already knows we are here and are lurking to see our next move.” The Ops officer suggested. “If that’s the case, then they have the advantage… they know the area.”

Trainor
Ops

“Our last encounter did not hold any subtlety in them. Watching us would be a new move for them,” Jen commented. It did not cancel out Trainor’s thoughts. It would simply add a new facet to their modus operendi.

Kelly looked at the readouts coming from the scans and took a sip of her coffee. They were all so hyper focused on the Darkness, what if there was another danger? “Can we get any kind of reading of weapons on the surface? Tenzig, scan the pattern of debris.”

At that type of scan, there was only one power source, only semi active, that had the energy level to project a force into space. However that didn’t mean items, like rockets, rail guns, and other items that weapons had warheads could be anywhere and be virtually impossible to scan.

“I’ve got a possible energy source on the planet that could theoretically maintain enough energy to fire something....” Trainor said. The Ops officer put the area he was scanning onto the main screen and highlighted the area he was referencing to.

Ominously the picture focused on a huge volcano, still active. There was some sort of base mid-way on the slope that was converting the natural energy of the volcano into a usable energy source.

Looking at her XO she expanded the debris field around the planet. “Looks like it is in orbit around the planet which is hard if it is destroyed outside the planet’s gravity well. If the ship was destroyed inside the gravity well then this pattern makes more sense.”

If someone did a movement correlation with every piece that was detected there could be a result. It would take the computer hours… but…

GM

“It’ll take us hours to put together the pieces of that ship, or the other debris for that matter,” Tenzing announced, “But if we brought a piece aboard and have our engineers look at it, at least we’d have something to work with.”

Trainor
Ops

“Can we do a volume assessment?” Jen asked after taking in the thoughts. “I am wondering if the ship was destroyed at point A there in space and a shuttle or escape craft had gotten away and destroyed there near the moon.”

The volume assessment would require the same amount of work as the motion correlation.

He nodded to Trainor. “Beam us a piece that we can correlate with what we already know.”

Looking at the Captain. “Do you think the energy reading is worth checking out?”
- Jen, XO

There would be no issue with the transport and a item the size of a captain’s chair was beamed aboard. At first observation it was consistent with a star-fleet bulkhead circa 2270-2290.

GM

Tenzing shook his head in response to the XO, “Looks like searching by volume would also take some time, but it appears there is a piece that I’m currently about to beam to the cargo bay.” The Ops Officer watched the transportation process on his console, verified the item, and returned his attention back to the XO. “Looks like we’ve got a small piece of a ship’s bulkhead.” Trainor began internal scans of the bulkhead, then looked back to the viewscreen.

“Our Engineers and Scientists could do more in-depth scans of the bulkhead, but it appears our energy source is coming from a volcano.” Trainor refocused the scan of the volcano and zoomed in closer to the source. “This is where the energy source is originating from,” Tenzing stated, pointing to the viewscreen.

Ops

The small base built in the side of the Volcano, seemed to be designed for creatures roughly the same size of humanoids.

OOC: Our science and Eng depts can create a thread to exam the bulkhead if they want :)

-Ray

“We’ve come to the right place,” Jen commented. This great energy source that allegedly transported the hapless vessel to here only be destroyed was the focus of this mission to afford clues to get them home. “That small base may be the only clue on what has happened. If there were survivors they may have gone there and there may be some clues left. There isn’t any bright neon lights in this system pointing ‘go home here at this big energy event’ so we have to go looking while keeping away from the Darkness.”

“Captain, while science and engineering work at that bulkhead piece I’m thinking a visit to that lab may be in order.” He looked back to Trainor. “Is there an atmosphere there? Will we need to suit up? And get those departments on studying the bulkhead. While we are away have the computer analyze motion and volume.”
- Jen, XO

“Agreed,” Kelly nodded at her XO. “You up for a field trip or want to stay on the bridge?”

Bordeaux CO

“Yes, sir,” Tenzing said as he took a quick scan of the mentioned base. The Ops officer was hoping there was an atmosphere in there since he wasn’t too fond of the environmental suites. Trainor had the computer begin an auto analyze the motion and volume, as the XO had asked. LtCmdr Trainor wasn’t too fond of so much going on while the darkness lurked about, but maybe they hadn’t seen the Atlantis after all.

“Maybe we will be lucky and when we get to the base there will be a lever with a bright red sign saying ‘Pull this to create spatial rift to travel through’,” Jen said. It wasn’t so much that they needed to ensure the identity of the vessel - that would be a bonus if they could - or even to explore a long-gone civilization and what had happened to it, but how in the name of the seven glaciers were they to hope to find something to help them - and all that under the tentacled noses of the Darkness? He knew the Atlantis could outrun them - but space was a 3D environment and if this was their stomping grounds they could come at them from more than one vector. But Jen would worry about that fun thought should it arise.
- Jen, xO

Jen gave the Captain’s question a thought. “It might be an old place but I’d like to take two security with me, Lt Styxx, Commander Nash and someone from Science. We don’t know what kind of facility this might be so having a bit of each discipline may help us figure it out. What should we be looking for?” He had his thoughts but they were still very different, he and her - he an old infantryman and she navy to the core.
- Jen, XO

Kelly looked at Jen and held her hand up with her palm flat. The Andorian was a counterbalance to her jump-in-with-both-feet personality. This did not mean there was no conflict between them. In fact, it was quite the opposite. They made a highly effective command team with Kelly pushing at times and Jen holding the line. Still, Kelly had a hard time breaking some of her old habits. “Paper, scissors, rock you for it.” As she was speaking she already thumping out her hand to pick how was leading the away team and who was stuck taking readings.

Jen was certain this was not normal ‘navy’ decision making. They had done the equivalent of tossing the dice in his past for some actions. Unorthodox was what many would call the Captain. That, if combined with brilliance, would be formidable on the battlefield. Terrans were just unpredictable. It made figuring them out all the harder. Andorians had particular codes that defined their conduct, making their actions less likely to be taken as aggressive. Reading humans was like reading a Vulcan; most times one was wrong. Romulans and Klingons were much easier. All that said he opted in this case for .. paper .. the Captain seemed to like scissors so gambled that she may try to do something different.

Throwing a rock, Kelly felt a smirk form at the side of her mouth looking at Jen’s selection. He won it fair and square. “Am I that predictable?”

“Not at all,” he said. “Wouldn’t think that for a moment.”

Leaning over to her XO, Kelly said in a low whisper. “I hate you on so many levels right now,” before sitting back up. While the tone was neutral, Jen would clearly know it was meant with affection. Kelly always opted for away missions so often her XO had been mistaken for being the Captain too many times to count. It was only fair however to share the adventure and to Jen the planet’s climate below was more his speed than Kelly’s.

“As it should be, Captain. That is what makes a Captain/XO relationship work. That and marriages. We’ll revisit this when it’s a warmer climate for you. This world looks to be a resort to me with its weather.”
- Jen, XO

“Tigress should be available for your away team, Commander,” Trainor announced. Tenzing had his fair share of data to collect from the debris, along with the bulkhead that was sitting in their cargo bay. “I have the quartermaster standing by in the transporter room with the environmental suites, and tools you should need.”

=/\=Ensign Tigress and Lt. Robins report to transporter pad 12 for an away mission.=/\= Kelly accepted Tenzing’s suggestion and added the biologist to the mix.

Jen couldn’t help but frown. Between helmets in the military or suits in the navy, they played havoc with his antennae. He suspected that the Caitian would be just as thrilled.

The planet was a marginal class M world or at least was a some point in the past 1000 years. The air was thin but was breathable - at least for a day or two. The risk was the temperature extremes that came with the rising and the setting of the sun. There were “hyper” air currents that could create a huge gust of wind of artic or desert temperatures that would howl at over 200 miles per hour freezing things in minutes. The heat gusts were far less impressive and would only seem like a warm breeze.

The base didn’t have that weather extreme problem and was the average temperature of the planet approximately 5 degrees Celsius. Nobody was going to take a tropic vacation there, but it was bearable for a few hours.

GM

Moving over to the display while the Captain considered their options, Jen looked at the readout. Quite the winds. The temperature looked very pleasant and, he thought, the winds would be nasty to try to stand in but very stimulating with the coolness. He liked it. “Were it not for the winds I could have a pleasant picnic there,” he mused to Trainor.
- Jen, XO

“You know Trainor you could take Lexi’s spot down there if you want to get out and stretch your legs. Me with a tricorder working with you or a 200-mile-an-hour flash freeze. Both sound mighty fun for a day’s duty.”

Kelly Bordeaux

“I’d rather have another round with a Bartol, then head down to that wind mill of a planet,” Trainor replied. Tenzing was not feeling very risky, and could never fathom why ever ship he’s been on thus far had found their way into a distant quadrant or galaxy. “Invite me down when the temperature rises about another 15 degrees.”

Jen moved away and out to the transporter room to prepare for the trip. Some fresh (cold) air was just the ticket, for him at least.

Trainor watched as the XO disappeared into the turbolift before turning back to the CO. “So who replaces him if he blows away?” Tenzing asked jokingly. The Ops officer wasn’t planning on visiting the center chair again, and with the predicament, Q placed him in, it might be a decade or two before that occurs.
