Mardusk cocked his head at her for a moment… and then he got that look in his eye. The one that said he knew something she didn’t. “Take that thought… and throw it in the recycler. The most that bastard would’ve done is hurt me worse. But he wasn’t gonna kill me. Like I told him while we were goin’ at it… I cheat.” and he chuckled and polished off the rest of his burger in a single bite. “I don’t think he ever really grasped that. Maybe it didn’t come through the Universal Translator right.” he said around the mouthful of burger with a grin.

Mardusk

Cara eyed him and set a hand over his, “I never said he was gonna kill ya. That thought never occured ta me. I said you not walkin’ out on yer own two feet. You coulda been hurt a lot worse, a lot of other people coulda died. And yeah the idea of you really hurt doesna sit well with me.” Yeah Gravel was a tank and he joked about it, but there was a level of deadly seriousness about it too. It was the way his mind worked and at such speed in those situations that made him dangerous. It also made those he cared for extremely safe. “I know, chuck it because it didn’t happen.” She sat back and began eat.

O’Farrell

“Exactly. Can’t waste time on ‘what if’s.” he said and picked up another burger. He grinned at her and said “And you like me. You were worried about me. Awww… how cute.” and he winked at her as he took a bite.

Mardusk

The tip of her tongue made a short appearance. “Yep sure do and sure did. I’m Irish. We’re passionate about every emotion. Deal with it.” She smirked at him. She picked up a farl and dipped it in the soup and ate.

O’Farrell

“If only that passion ran towards knowing where one was going and how to get there.” he said with a grin. “Then maybe I could actually have my patrols looking for miscreants and not wayward Counselors.”

Mardusk

“I am quite capable of callin’ for help if I need it. I have’na ended up anywhere I shouldna in two months.” She took a pull off her drink with a smirk. “And without ya around for 2 weeks, ta order them ta look for me, we’ll be findin’ out if I can.”

O’Farrell

Mardusk took a drink and said “Oh, there’s gonna be a pool on you getting list by shifts end.” and he laughed. “You should ask your shadow if you can get in on that action.” and he laughed again.
Mardusk

Cara made a derisive noise. “Wouldn’t that be chestin’ ta bet on myself?” Everyone was really amused by it and good natured. “The bet should’na be on me gettin’ lost, but on whether I can figure it out without help. We all know I’m gonna get lost.” It was annoying and frustrated Cara to no end. She had managed to memorize 3 different ways to her office, sickbay, the security office, and the bridge. That had to count for something, right? Most days she felt really bad for Royo being stuck with her.

O’Farrell

Gravel took her hand and said “Hun… if we bet on you findin’ your way… we’d never win. But you do know you can have the computer show you the way, right? I know, I know, you don’t want to rely on the computer to get you around.” and he laughed and squeezed her hand softly before letting go. “Besides… I like that ya get lost all the time. Its like we are constantly playing hide-and-seek.” and he smiled.

Mardusk

“I do use the computer. Why do you think I manage to find my way from my office to sickbay?” She took a sip and then tipped the mouth of the bottle towards him. “Then tha’ is what they should bet on. How long it takes ya ta find me. And no usin’ my cimbadge or computer ta track my vitals.” Then she grinned and tossed her hair over her shoulder giving him a hot look, “So you wanna play hide-n-seek or follow behind me and watch while I get lost?”

O’Farrell

He grinned wickedly and said “Both. You look great gettin’ lost… especially when I’m behind ya.” and he laughed and took a drink. “So… when are we gonna go somewhere together? As in take a vacation. I think we have earned one, and I would like to see you in a bikini.” and he laughed again. “But I’m actually bein’ serious. We should. Maybe go to Earth? See your home? I bet my mom would like to meet ya. And we could go do touristy stuff. Museums, natural wonders… be a proper couple without mental health crises and security alarms every ten minutes.”

Mardusk

Cara got a far away look on her face, for a moment she was somewhere else. “Yeah, I would like to meet yer mom. And I am sure my family would like ta meet ya, and tear the micky outta me.” The idea made Cara laugh. “Earth has great beaches and lots of touristy stuff.” Cara gave it serious thought. “SOP is ta recommend and grant leave time after things like this. We can leave whenever ya want after the investigator is done.”

O’Farrell

Mardusk looked at her for a moment and said “You do know I lived on Earth for years… right? I was at this place you mighta heard of… the Academy? Yeah, its right there on Earth. Little town called San Francisco. Maybe ya heard of it?” and he laughed. “But yeah… why not? Let’s do it. We’ll go see my mom first. And then we can relax with your family a bit.” He took a drink and then said “You told them you are dating an alien yet?” and he grinned.

Mardusk

Cara nodded, “Yeah I know. Yer the one that suggested Earth. Sometimes home is the best vacation though. We could go ta Idolla. Not as well known as Risa, and that’s a plus in my book.” Cara grinned, “Ya know we can go home and spend some time with them. Then we can go get lost. I don’ know about you, but there’s plenty I haven’t seen, and we do have great beaches.” She scooped the last of her soup as she nodded. “Mmmhmmm.” She ate the last bite and set the spoon in the empty bowl. “Yes, I have, and honestly they would be more shocked if ya were human. And you? Ya tell yer mother ya datin’ a crazy red headed Irish girl, yet?”

O’Farrell

Mardusk shook his head. “Didnt have to. You sent her fruit, remember? I’m pretty sure she pulled your file, read through every single line, and made a judgment on you half way through.” and he grinned. “But I sent her that picture of you and I in the afternoon torpedo bay that one time you got lost and tripped the security lockdown.” and he grinned even more.

Mardusk

“Oh I remember. Hope she liked ‘em.” Cara was almost as red as her hair. That had been embarrassing and horrible, she was never going to live it down. She still couldn’t figure out how she ended up there. She thought maybe someone reprogrammed the signs just to mess with her. It had scared her no end too. “O’ course you had ta send her tha’ one.”

O’Farrell

Gravel laughed and said “Don’t worry. If she hasn’t had Section 31 grab you and throw you in a hole somewhere, you’re probably good.” and he gave her a wink. “And you only have her to deal with. Me, I’ve got… what… a dozen or more family members going to grill me about me and you? Geez… take the win when you can, doll.”

Mardusk

Her brows raised almost to her hairline. “Just her? Apparently you don’na know how loved ya are because yer entire department grills me on a daily basis. Though I have a feelin’ yer mom will be much much worse.” Cara grinned and shrugged, he was worth it. “No, not a dozen. My dad and two sisters.” Cara turned her bottle back and forth, “Mom won’ be doin’ any grillin’. So no even a half dozen.”

O’Farrell

“Moms always grill.” he said with a smile. “Thry just normally do it in a way their kids don’t see.” He finished his drink and then said “Okay… let’s do this. C’mon. Let’s put in the leave requests and then call people and tell ‘em we’re coming.”

Mardusk

“Oh yeah, come on. ‘Afore ya decide that ya can’t take time off.” Cara finished her drink and stood up. “We’ll go do that, then we can play hide-n-seek.” She winked at him as she passed on her way to the door.

O’Farrell

“Think I’m more in the mood for Twister…” he said as he slid out of the booth and moved to her side.

Mardusk

Cara slipped her hand into his as they left. “Twister it is. We can see how flexible ya really are.” They road the lift up to deck 4. “Yer place or mine?” Not that it mattered much. Really they should just have a door put in the wall between them.

O’Farrell

“Mine. Furniture is bigger.” and he laughed. As they approached his door, he said “Or we call home from each of our rooms and then meet over here. Your call.”

Mardusk

“Yours then. I’m no quite ready ta let ya outta my sight yet. Unless ya would rather yer privacy? Talk to yer mom alone for a bit.”

She stopped before going in. No she wasn’t quite ready to let him out of her sight, it was an emotional response, but the truth. However after the day he’d had, if he needed or wanted to talk to his mother she didn’t mind. Sometimes those parental ties, even as an adult, were so very necessary to give anchor and balance back, and comfort.

O’Farrell

Mardusk thought for a minute and then said “Tell ya what. How about you go change into something more comfortable, and then come over? I’ll call my mom and get us some drinks.”

He went to his door and said “Just need a quick breather, doll. I’m not ready to let you outta my sight for long, either.” and he grinned and went inside.

He stood in his quarters for a minute, just breathing. He then walked to the computer and tapped the comms. He punched in the code for his mother’s private comms and waited. It took a few minutes but soon the face of his mother, Vice Admiral Serchena Mardusk, was on the screen. She smiled and said “Hey there, Grav. To what do I owe the pleasure of such an unscheduled comm?” Gravel smiled and said “Hey, Ma. Just wanted to let ya know I’m coming back to Earth for some leave. Not sure exactly when, I gotta get cleared by Fleet Security and Jag. We had a ‘incident’ on board and I neutralized a threat. But after the investigation, I’m taking a few weeks off. And…” and he paused and took a breath, “… Cara’s coming with me. Thought you might wanna meet her.” The Vice Admiral hadn’t flinched at the talk of him killing someone, but her eyes went wide when he said he was bringing someone home to meet her. “Oh… OH! Well… that is certainly something then, isn’t it?” and she shook her head and smiled. “It’ll be nice to thank her for the fruit in person.” and Gravel laughed. “Yeah, I haven’t stopped teasing her about that, either.” and he laughed again. Serchena smiled and said “Ok. Give ne dates and I’ll clear as much time as I can. And you are good with the other thing?” Gravel nodded and said “Yeah. Ton’a witnesses and conveyed threat. Use of deadly force, assault of Star Fleet personnel and civilians… including kids. Should be cut and dry.” and she nodded. “Okay. Keep me posted.” He nodded and said “Yes, Ma’am. Talk to you soon. Love ya, Ma.” She smiled and said “Love you, too.” and the screen went blank. Mardusk exhaled slowly and then stood and went to the cabinet where he kept the good stuff and started pouring two glasses.
