She should have expected to be called to Bordeaux’s office after the woman met with Satis, but she’d hoped to be left alone. No such luck. At least she’d find out if he’d been honest with their Captain or not. If not, it was one more reason not to trust him and might play in her favor. If he had told the truth, then…then what? Aurra shewed the corner of her bottom lip as she walked the corridors towards the bridge.

“Then I might be stuck with him.” She said to herself.

“What?” A passing Ensign asked.

“Oh, sorry,” She smiled at the young man. “I was talking to myself.” He returned the smile and nodded silently. After another second or two they both set off in opposite directions with the doctor telling herself to stop talking out loud.

With a little luck, given that she didn’t run into Bren on her way to the Ready Room, Aurra arrived and smoothed her hair and uniform, then rang the chime.

—Talisse

“Come,” Kelly called out hearing the chime. Her tone was a little more formal as was her posture since this was a scheduled meeting and not a drop-in meeting.

Kelly Bordeaux CO

The doors swooshed open, revealing the CO waiting for her. Aurra stepped into the room with no idea as to how Bordeaux was feeling about the meeting. Since Satis had been in her place only hours ago, she was pretty sure the meeting was about him, but she’d been surprised before.

“Yes, Captain, you wanted to see me?”

—Talisse

“Yes, take a seat,” she gestured across from her. “So Bren Satis came to visit me at your behest.” Kelly’s tone was neutral saying nothing more about the meeting other than Bren was there and because Talisse ordered him to come. Both doctors had impeccable records and were beyond qualified to hold their posts. The question before Kelly was could they perform their job responsibilities? She had heard Bren’s side. Now it was time to hear Talisse’s.

The doctor nodded–at least he had actually followed orders and reported to Kelly. The think to do now was to find out if he’d been honest about what happened. With a deep inhale, Aurra seated herself in the offered chair and crossed her legs. “Captain, I know the incident happened while we were at the academy, which was years ago, but he could have cost me my career.”

—Talisse

Kelly gave her CMO her undivided attention. She had done the same with Dr. Satis and Dr. Talisse deserved the same respect and consideration when telling her side of the story. Kelly did not need to be a Captain to know every story had two sides. It did not mean the sides had to be different; however, every side experienced it differently. She understood Bren’s side. Now it was time to understand Talisse’s. “Tell me more about that,” Kelly asked.

Kelly Bordeaux CO

The incident was extremely private for Aurra. She hadn’t really discussed it with anyone, just kept it tucked away in her mind for years. “We met our first year at the Academy. Just a chance meeting in the cafeteria that threw us together when there was a lack of seating one day. He was witty and intelligent and he kept a commentary going about the ‘privileged’ students around us. I laughed so much that day. He did too. We just hit it off and became constant companions—best friends for 3 1/2 years until he tried to see if he could control me long enough to steal drugs from sickbay.”

—Talisse

Kelly’s eyebrows arched slightly before relaxing back to normal. That was a huge jump in the story. Kelly appreciated directness but it felt as if there was a lot being left out. “So what happened to change the nature from BFF to drug mule.” If Talissa was going to be direct, Kelly would follow her lead. “Three and a half years is a long time to nurture a relationship to obtain something one could find in the red light district on a street corner?” Kelly did not doubt the story. Bren had said the same thing. What Kelly was looking for was the differences in the two officers’ perceptions. Events were things that happened and then for better or worse were over. The perceptions and emotions around events were the hardest things to get over because emotions did not have cut-off switches. People felt things long after events which is what Talisse was dealing with now.

Did she hear slight disbelief in the Captain’s voice? Maybe, maybe not. Was she still hurt over the incident from years ago? Definitely. “He was recruited in our last year at the Academy. He didn’t tell me everything about it, but I know he was chosen because he was Betazoid. He spoke about the project in vague terms, so I don’t have all the details he does. I’d worked out that it had to do with mentally influencing others.” Here, Aurra took a deep breath and looked concerned. “You have to understand, Captain. During our years of friendship, I’d allowed Bren…I mean, Lt Satis, to enter my mind twice. It was easier in those two instances to allow him into my mind to understand what my words couldn’t express. That’s how I knew it was him once I broke free of his influence right before carrying the drugs out of sickbay.”

Aurra tried to physically relax as the subject matter of their conversation made her tighten up.

—Talisse

The use of the man’s first name informed Kelly that before whatever had happened, there was a deeper friendship there. The use of it now indicated to her that Aurra subconsciously still harbored a piece of that connection even if she didn’t want to admit it. The reference was too personal and in Kelly’s experience lacked the venom people had when they truly hated someone. There was also the admission of her willingly allowing him to do this prior to the event in question.

It was hard for Kelly to maintain her neutral stance in this situation. She could easily side with Bren taking a hardline stance that orders were orders and they all came from Starfleet. She could easily side with Talisse and empathize with the feelings of hurt and betrayal one had when relationships, even platonic ones, veered from the expected path. Luckily Kelly was not here to pick sides or pass judgment on the events from long ago.

Tapping her stylus on the desk, Kelly dove directly into the matter she needed to handle. “I understand his actions caused a fracture in your professional and personal relationship with Dr. Satis. You sending him down here asking for a transfer however is not going to happen. I need a fully staffed medical department so my question going forward is can you work with Dr. Satis?” Kelly did not state any indication of her intentions based on Talisse’s response. Kelly knew both doctors could fake it until they made it in sickbay. Both doctors would never let a personal issue impact their dedication to their careers but that did not mean there would not be fractures in the team. Kelly needed to know where Aurra stood.

Kelly Bordeaux CO

That was the question, wasn’t it? Aurra took a beat to reflect on what the Captain was asking to find the true answer. “Yes, Sir. I can work with him and remain professional. It was just such a shock seeing him standing there and it brought back all the feelings from years ago.” Mossy green eyes looked directly at the CO. “My first choice would be to see him off the Atlantis, but second to that, I thought it was important for you to know, and for him to acknowledge, what happened at the Academy. I don’t know what he’s like now—so if something goes awry in medical…well…we are all informed now.”

—Talisse

“Why would anything go awry in medical,” Kelly asked calmly. The CMO was a professional. She would never let anything come between her and her job treating the wellbeing of the crew but the woman seemed genuinely scared of Dr. Bren. Maybe scared wasn’t the right word but she was very unsettled about being around him.

“Would it help if we kept both of you off the roster at the same time? We have the main sick bay and the clinic on deck 17. What if we make sure the roster has you spending time far enough apart that you don’t cross paths as best as we can in a floating city?” Kelly meant her comment sincerely. She needed both officers on duty and functioning as a unit. She would do whatever accommodations were needed to fix this.

Well, it hadn’t turned out quite the way she’d envisioned, but at least the Captain was aware of Bren’s ability to influence someone elses actions if he chose to. It looked like he was going to be allowed to stay and she would just have to deal with it. Aurra subtly squared her shoulders and leaned away from the back of the chair. “That’s quite alright, Sir, I’m sure Lt Satis and I can work it out amongst ourselves. If tweaking needs to be done, I’ll take care of it myself. Thank you for listening to my concerns though, I appreciate it.”

She was ready to leave now and get back to medical. Nothing to take the sting of embarrassment away like work. “If there’s nothing else?”

—Talisse

Kelly frowned slightly. “Aurra,” she said in a gentle tone, “I know you are not thrilled with this situation but my hands are tied. There is nothing in his record reflecting what he shared with me, what you shared with me. I am not refuting it happened. It would be stupid of me to do so but I can’t send him off the ship without a reason. What would you have me do if I cannot remove him?” Kelly did not want Talisse to think she was dismissing what happened to her or that she did not empathize with her. The CMO was clearly upset by her body language and Kelly needed to make it as right as possible within her scope as Captain.

Kelly Bordeaux CO

She knew how these things worked. There was no proof of what happened although it seemed that she and Bren had told similar stories about the event. His appearance had taken her by surprise and she’d over reacted before taking time to think about it. “It’s fine, Captain. I was shocked to see him and acted accordingly. I should have taken time to mull everything over and then had a sit down with him. It will be alright. Is there anything else?” In truth, she was not happy about Bren staying, but she didn’t have the power to get him reassigned and Captain Bordeaux wasn’t about to do it for her.

—Talisse

“No,” Kelly said feeling a slight frustration with the whole situation. She tried not to be the gavel in interpersonal relationship issues but at times it was her job. “You are free to go. If you need anything my door is always open.”

Kelly Bordeaux CO

Aurra stood and smoothed her tunic. “Thank you, Captain, we’ll be fine.” The doctor turned, walked to the door and exited the Ready Room.
