Among the stars on the USS Atlantis.....

“Rand,” Lauren snapped at her boyfriend whose feet were propped up on a console as he was reading a PaDD.

“Yes, my angel of delight?” Rand muttered, noting the tone that Lauren had used and wondering if it was about socks or a dinner date with their friends he had forgotten this time.

“You did do that thing I needed right,” Lauren looked at him with an eyebrow raised. “Things are going to be a bit uncomfortable for Miss Scott if you did not handle what needed to be handled,” she crossed her arms waiting for Rand to reply.

“Huh?” He said, and looked up from the PaDD. On it, was a recently acquired collection of early 21st Century comics about something called Dungeons and Dragons. While it was easily accessible as a holo-novel, Rand had found an odd kind of enjoyment in actually reading the pictures instead of acting them out himself in the holo-deck.

“Oh that? Not yet” he told her and sat up, putting the PaDD to one side. “Do you have any idea what kind of abuse of my authority that might be? Sure I can send through a temporary one, but you really want me to use my access to do that for someone you barely know? Is it really that important?” In the silence that followed, Lauren was able to impart to him, simply by looking at him, exactly how important it was for him to do what she had asked. If not for this Miss Scott and her muscle bound bodyguard, then absolutely for Rand’s own well being and ability to enjoy himself in his off duty time tonight, and every night for the foreseeable future if he really thought about it.

“Fine” he said, and leaned forward, tapping out a code into a particular section of his console and pressing the big green yes button. “There, it’s done. Happy now?”

Lt Devon Rand, Intelligence

“Maybe,” she said looking at Rand and trying not to smile. He so easily broke her will down to stay mad at him. She also knew that she would owe him for this. “So did you finish your Ogre program,” she asked pulling the PaDD from his hand. Lauren knew what it was going to cost her for Rand to clear Ally Scott on Orion. Maybe if she agreed to it before he asked it would be less painful.

“You know I am not going to wear some elf costume that comes with a skirt long enough to barely cover my south forty as we frolic in the fields battling flying dragons that have stolen all the sheep from some poor farmer. At least tell me it will be a little less predictable where we battle some cyclops or werewolf to save a town?” Lauren actually had no idea what this Dungeon and Dragons thing was. Her mind could only picture crazy B-science fictions shows where the intrepid adventurers battled large wasps or sea monsters. She was acting as if this was going to be something she did under duress but secretly, Lauren was rather excited. After the Western shootout where they met each other, Lauren had learned that while Rand tended to be the quieter one in the relationship, the man had a very vivid imagination.

“So when is this hobbit adventure going to start,” she asked him with a smile.

“Hobbit?” Rand asked, reaching for the PaDD that she had stolen, “you know you just offended generations of geeks by linking Dungeons and Dragons with Lord of the Rings, the correct term, my dear, is Halfling.” Missing the PaDD by a mile as Lauren snatched it away, Rand grinned and took his feet down off the console, and came to his feet to pursue his retreating girlfriend.

“Oh we are not going on any old adventure” he said as he moved around the couch that was blocking the path to her, “We are going on an epic, mysterious adventure to Barovia. Just make sure you bring your brown pants.” While seeming casual, Rand suddenly made a dive across the couch for the PaDD, and Lauren.

Lauren felt Rand impact her around the waist and drive her into the soft cushions of the couch. While he did let a lot of his body weight impact her, Rand twisted and curled enough so that the bulk of his weight was balanced his knee and elbow. “Epic adventure,” she said after letting out a small oomphing sound as they sunk into the couch. “Like epic adventure on Orion last year,” she said with a hint of a smile.

“That wasn’t epic,” Rand said with a smirk that spoke volumes. “That was, well, memorable.”

“Like epic adventure when I tied you to the bed and then skirted off to OED and you had to chase me down for six months,” Lauren let out a small laugh as she wiggled and adjusted under him.

“Okay, who would have ever come up with a storyline or movie plotline like that?” He grinned again, remembering. Not long ago that would have been a sore point of discussion, but with time, everything healed. “You wouldn’t read about it, would you. Okay, that was rather epic.”

“What about we create an epic adventure right here…on this couch,” she lifted her head up and kissed him gently on the lips.

He kissed her back, and let the kiss linger for a long, long while. Lauren Shan was many things, she was tough, resourceful and devious. Manipulative and cunning were also apt descriptions of her. She had needs that she liked to fill and an odd sense of morals to some. She was also loving, tender and gentle if you got her in the right mood and right frame of mind. She was a woman of many faces and sides and as often as she left him angry enough to kick a cat, he knew the two of them loved each other just as passionately.

“What about the adventure?” He asked when he let their lips part.

“Shhh just lay still and let me show you how adventurous I can be,” she said pulling off her shirt exposing her black tank top under her work shirt. It fit snugger than probably what it should and resembled her off duty look of sleek and formfitting. Lauren relaxed back letting her hands and lips worked in tandem finding the places that were not typical erogenous zones yet when given attention amplified the emotions and sensation in Rand exponentially. She loved everything about this man. He was kind and gentle but fearless and brave. Devon Rand was everything she wanted in life. He put up with her crap and kept her safe yet followed her where she needed to go supporting her every step of the way.

“I love you Rand,” Lauren mumbled the words out between her lips as more and more of them became revealed on the couch. Nights like this could easily double for a room being cased from a break in and Lauren did not find a darn thing wrong with that.

“You are not getting out of it that easily, no distractions this time!” He kissed her again, but his kiss lingered for longer than was absolutely necessary. “Well maybe a small distraction,” he said after breaking contact a second time, then kissing her again.

“An epic distraction where,” she wiggled out from under him and moved so that she was sitting on top of him with his back pressed into the couch. Lauren was scrappy. The move was a common one security people learned in hand to hand combat. Before Rand, she had always been able to take care of herself, but Devon had cleaned up her style giving her a few tricks no one would expect from a five-foot four-inch doctor. “You and I spend the night avoiding my carelessly tossed stiletto and your hap hazardously placed belt as we make our way to the fountain o’ refreshment,” she attempted a deep baritone that was spinning a yarn of orcs and death. “Neither wind or rain or dark of night,” she began a long-winded monologue only to have it end abruptly.

“We go on an adventure in the morning, alright!” Rand said forcefully, “We’re going on an adventure, Lauren! No distractions! After this one.” Reaching up, he grabbed the blanket that was almost always thrown over the back of the couch and pulled it over the two of them.

Lt Devon Rand, Intel

Lauren let out full on laugh as Rand began to force her from silly teasing to dizzy and skin tingly mood. It was hard to change her mood. That was what she loved about Rand the most. The man followed her through hell and back. He was verbose on his threats that they would never go to places they had been before only the second she needed him, Rand was her staunchest ally. Their backgrounds were so different. Their past could not be more of a mirror image yet everything she ever needed Rand provided without and strings or conditions. Lauren might not understand the love of his past time but she understood how much she loved him. Her mind became fuzzy as she thought about their first night together and her demand that it was just meant to release tension in a time-honored way from millennia ago. How could she have ever known that that night from three years ago, when he stepped into her life, things would change forever?
