Lera was laughing as she walked around the shared quarters. “No, Jessica…” she laughed. “I’m not gonna tell you. You’ll have to wait and see.”

Jessica was kneeling on her desk chair, her arms resting on the back as she watched Lera go back and forth, looking for a missing bracelet. “I bet it’s Martin… that amazing engineer that works third shift? You said he was cute. Did he ‘finally’ ask you out?”

Lera shook her head. “Guess you will see… Where is that damned bracelet?”

Jessica held it up, where she had been holding it since seeing it on the bookshelf five minutes ago. She dangled it in front of Lera. “You meant this one?” As Lera reached for it, she yanked it back out of her reach. “Come on… tell me. I have watch tonight in the shuttle bay. Give me something to dream about. Please?”

Lera lunged again and Jessica jumped out of the way. When Mar arrived, he would hear the two women laughing and hollering at one another like a couple of kids at a party.

This big Orion moved through the passageways with an uncommon look on his face… he was smiling. Dressed in a black tshirt under a dark gray jacket and matching pants, he got a few looks and a few “Heya, Chief.” from some of his staff. As he came to the door of Lera’s room, he stopped and listened to the commotion. He waited for a lull in the conversation and then pressed the chime.

As the chime rang thru the room, Jessica hesitated. It’s all Lera needed. “GOTCHA!” The young engineer said and snatched the bracelet from her roommate’s hand and slid it on her wrist. She laughed as Jessica got up and tugged down her uniform shirt.

“No, fair. I’ll get even after watch. You know that, right?” Jessica jumped up and headed to the door. Palming it open she almost fell back in shock. “CHIEF!?” She said with a strange look on her face as she took him in from top to bottom. “Ummm.... are you here for me? I’m not late. I have fifteen minutes before I am due in the cargo bay.” She was obviously confused.

Lera had grabbed her other bracelet and the matching pair now sat on her right wrist as she stood just behind Jessica and watched the chaos and confusion unfold in the girl’s voice. A smile crept over her face as she realized, this was how the whole ship would eventually react. She hoped Mar was ready… then she hoped she was as well.

Mardusk paused… and then looked down. “Ms. Chambers. While I appreciate your desire to tell me when you are supposed to be where, remember… I made the duty roster. Besides… I’m not here to tell you you are late for anything.” and he looked past her to Lera. “I’m here to pick up Lera for dinner.” and he looked down at Chambers. “If you don’t mind, that is.”

Jessica couldn’t have been more shocked if her supervisor had dropped to a knee and proposed to her. Her jaw actually fell open in a loss for words. She turned to look at Lera and her eyes widened in disbelief. Even as her lips curled up in a smile. She mouthed the word Lucky before turning back to Mar. “Ummmm of course… I’ll just ummm… I’ll go to my watch.” She turned once more to Lera and smiled with a hidden thumbs up before sliding past Mar into the hallway.

Lera was smiling and blushing as she stepped up towards Mar. “Sorry… I didn’t tell her. I thought the surprise would be more effective. I hope you don’t mind I did that.” She bit her lip worried, now, that perhaps she shouldn’t have.

A low rumble came out of Mardusk as he chuckled. “Priceless. Did you see her face? Had I known, I’d have snapped a picture and posted in the Security Office.” and he chuckled again. He looked down at her and said “You look beautiful.” and he smiled.

She smiled and blushed slightly, her cheeks coloring to match her hair. “You look amazing yourself.” She moved into the hall and stood beside him. “So where are we going?” Her smile and eyes were all for him. He did look amazing. The black on his skin highlighting one another perfectly.

“Holodeck. I know I said reubens, but I thought we could both use a break so I reserved us two hours. Food should already be there.” and he let her walk ahead of him so they could let people pass… and so he could look at her surreptitiously.

She smiled and laughed. “Fair enough. But I hope it’s more than pretzels and beer. Mike seems to think it was funny to tell me that was the dinner menu for his opening tomorrow night. Part of me knows he is teasing me, the other part thinks it would be prudent to eat before we go.” She laughed and lead the way to the holodeck, enjoying the looks the occasional passer seemed to give them. As if she had a huge bodyguard behind her as she moved thru the halls. She couldn’t wait to hear how Jessica spread this come morning. Shift would be interesting tomorrow indeed.

Lera

As they approached the Holodeck, Mardusk stepped ahead. “Onnne sec…” and he tapped in a code.

As the doors opened, they faced a desert. Hot wind blew and the sand had wave-like patters across it. He took her hand and led her in. As the doors closed, there was an oasis in front of them. A pool of beautiful, clear water sat surrounded by palm trees and flowering jasmine and honeysuckle bushes. A large tent sat near the edge of the water, looking out over it. The sun was starting to set, and two torches burned on either side of the open tent flap. Mardusk led her inside. It was cool, and there was a single, large room. In it were pillows and rugs, and plates of food sat around a small fire over which turned kabobs of vegetables and meats.

Mardusk looked at her and said “I wanted us to get away for a bit. And the motif matched the menu, so…” and he looked down at her. “Yes? No? Maybe? I can swap everything out but the food. That’s actually real.” and he laughed a self-conscious laugh.

Mardusk

“MAARRR…” She gasped and let him lead her to the oasis. It was amazing and the brightness in her face was proof. Her hand glanced lightly over a bush as they passed it and she ran her hand down the flap of the tent.

Looking around, she shook her head. “It’s amazing! Honest…” she looked at him and smiled. “And at sunset. I love it.” She couldn’t exactly leap into his arms, so she got as close to him as she could. One hand rose to rest on his chest and the other crooked a finger to coax him to bend down. “Come here…” If he bent down, he’d be met with a gentle kiss from her.

Lera

He smiled and said “I’m glad you like it.” and he did, indeed, bend down. He kissed her, but a grin broke the contact. “Sorry… just glad you like it. Here!” and he quickly arraigned some of the big pillows and rugs so she could sit comfortably. He piled a larger group up for himself.
