Revna sighed. Some people just had to make it hard. That was fine by her. Being in an office with four walls didn’t suit some people. She was off duty official duty but her job…actually jobs now, never really stopped. Revna left her office and headed down to the preschool classroom. There was so much work to do here, but she picked up a PaDD and headed to her quarters. She changed, cotton jeans and a long t-shirt. She headed for Ten-Forward.

Revna entered and looked around. There were a few people there. Apparently they liked Mike’s bar better. That was okay she had to look over the files on the PaDD anyway. She walked over to the bar and along its length, and spotted exactly what she was looking for. The end bar stool. She took a seat and bit back a smile as the bar tender shook his head and pointed to another seat. She settled in and started looking at the PaDD.

“Look, miss, you don’t want to sit there, there are plenty of places you can sit where you can go about your business in peace.”

Revna smirked, “Oh no, lad, I’m exactly where I want to be. I’ll have a Shirly Temple for now.” The bar tender gave her her drink with a look like she was crazy. Revna took a sip of her drink and turned back to the PaDD. She had to inventory what the preschool had before she could start making plans. She took a sip of her drink and worked through the information on her PaDD while she waited.

Lt. Edman, Counselor

Revna didn’t have to wait long, her timing was almost perfect. Nash came through the doors not long after she had sat down on his bar stool, out of uniform and in his casual high collared coat, undone to reveal a casual button up shirt and dark khakis, the ever present cigar stub was stuck in the corner of his mouth.

Nash hardly noted the few people in Ten Forward anymore, he preferred it this way anyway as opposed to the bustle it had once been. Without looking around he turned for the bar and had already taken a good number of steps before he realized that another person was sitting in his seat. He recognized the coppery blond hair and the twin braids immediately, and while he shook his head slightly, he smiled She looked different out of uniform. Touche, Princess. Well played ran through his mind.

He hadn’t paused though, and by the time he reached the bar the bartender was already moving to talk to him. “Tequila, Harry,” Nash said as he took a seat one apart from Revna, placing the stub of the cigar in the ashtray that was usually strategically placed near his seat.

“Her we go, Mr Nash,” Harry said, passing him a tumbler and a bottle of the gold alcohol. “Did you want to eat?”

“Sure Harry, but take the ladies order first. It looks like she’s going to have her work cut out for her. Ever tried an Arnold Palmer, Lieutenant Edman? I never could stand the sweetness of a Shirley Temple myself.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Revna seemingly didn’t pay attention, but knew exactly when Lt. Cmdr Nash walked in. Eyes glued to her PaDD continuing to read and work she noted that having her in his seat didn’t cause a physical reaction, no faltering, no change in pace. He handled surprises well, or at least annoying interruptions of daily routine.

At the mention of her name she looked up, curiously. “Actually I can’t stand them either, not since I was a kid. But since I’m currently working on the preschool curriculum, that I got snagged into taking care of, I thought the nostalgia might remind me of how a child thinks.” She tipped the PaDD and then set it down.

As she spoke she turned in the seat to face him. A random strand of hair annoying was quickly brushed out of the way. Her braid in disarray from moving all the equipment in the offices that day. “Actually, it has been a very long time since I’ve had an Arnold Palmer, Lt. Cmdr Nash.”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

“Well, seeing as your not working on that PaDD for the preschool how about we get you something you like to drink? Harry,” he called out softly to the bartender who by now had moved to the other end of the bar.

Revna nodded to the bar tender, glanced at Nash, “An Arnold Palmer. But not that replicated stuff. Otherwise a Solo.”

Taking a drink of the tequila he had poured himself, Nash lifted his eyes to look into hers directly. His eyes were Ice-Blue, but they couldn’t be called cold at all. They were intelligent and had a depth behind them that his exterior worked hard to cover. “A counselor and the new preschool teacher? You have more than a few strings to your bow, Counselor. You need to watch out for one kid though, by the name of Maybelle Spunkler. She’s a wordy, inquisitive little terror around the lower decks.”

Lt Cmdr Nash. CTO

Revna met his gaze straight on. Her more copper than brown eyes showing she’d seen more than one would expect. She was neither bothered by the eye contact nor invested in a staring contest. She simply returned his gaze steadily. “Quite a few strings actually,” she thanked the bar tender for the Arnold Palmer and took a sip. More tea than lemonade. “It’s a good thing I’m a Very good shot, then. My father took great joy in teaching me to shoot.” Revna picked up the PaDD and looked at the list of names. “Maybelle Spunkler? I see her here.” She glances back at Nash, “Is she really? Care to tell me more about this little terror? I’d hate to be blindsided.”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

“I swear that kid knows every secret passage on this ship, she turns up from nowhere and bombards you with questions, and I have no doubt that one day she is going to be a fantastic information broker. She questions everything” Nash explained, then looked to Harry who had come back his way. “Lamb and a baked potato, with a few grilled mushrooms on the side.”

Revna smiled, “Children often are better than trained adults in getting information. The PaDD doesn’t say, how old is this little dare devil? Perhaps I can create an obstacle course for her to keep her out of the jeffries tubes.” Revna ponders aloud making a note on the PaDD about it.

“Ms Spunkler is a very mature 10 year old. I’d say making an obstacle course would just challenger her to solve it,” Nash smirked briefly. However annoying the young girl was, she was frustratingly likeable. That she had also questioned his story about how Santa wore red to hide the blood stains of naughty kids that asked too many questions was an impressive showing as to how her mind worked.

“Hmmm well she won’t be in my class, but I’ll certainly keep an eye out for her.”

Looking back at Revna, Nash paused to take another drink, only sips. In that time he noted the copper in her eyes matched that of her hair in a way, and he appreciated the confidence she had to return his gaze and talk about herself. “Where abouts are you from Counselor? I’m guessing you already read my file and know about me, I’d say Earth, but I’m from a colony originally and haven’t spent much time on Earth.

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

There was no point lying about it having seen his file. “I have seen it, but I don’t put a lot of worth into them. Our personnel files are not a reflection of ourselves but others opinions of us. There are few facts and lots of opinion. And since when I read a file for the first time I know neither the subject nor the author, they tend to annoy me more than anything.” Revna took a sip of her drink to see how he reacted to her statement. So far, professionally, she liked what she saw. He was calm, and not nearly as scary as rumors would have it. He was steady, thoughtful, observant, and self controlled. “I was born near the shores of the North Sea on Earth. Even in this century it is a wild and rough area to live and grow up in, but it has amazing beauty if you take the time to look.”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

“That sounds similar to the shores south of Anic City on Mintara Prime where I was born. The planet is mostly uninhabited but the cities are advanced and built to preserve nature.” Nash largely skipped the part she mentioned about his file, there was a lot of opinion in it backed by fact from Starfleet. That Nash disagreed with the fact was why he had ended up in prison in the first place, but he had nothing to regret about what he had done.

“I met another Starfleet Captain at his wedding last year, a Captain Knight of the Saracen. The guy is Italian I think. Is that anywhere near where you are from?” Picking up the cigar stub, he placed it between his teeth and took out his lighter. It was a silver flip lighter, clearly old and with a badly carved carving of a skull and crossbones in the side of it.

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Revna shrugged, “Yes and no. Italy is on the same continent, but in the Mediterranean. It’s warm and mostly tropical temperatures there. The North Sea is near the northern pole. It’s cold and bitter with a very short summer.” Revna saw the lighter and smiled softly. The image bringing back memories of sailing ships up and down the coast. Though pirates that used that symbol did not sale her sea, her people were notorious ancient pirates and plunderers. “You like pirates Mr. Nash?” she nodded at the lighter.
Lt. Edman, Counselor

“They always held a fascination for me as a kid,” Nash admitted. “Sailing was a past time I did often on Mintara Prime,” he lit the cigar and flipped the lighter shut, looking at it and falling silent for a moment. It wasn’t a memento of his childhood though, it was something he had been ‘given’ by those that believed he had done wrong and murdered his crew for glory. In Nash fashion, he kept it. It was a good lighter and it was useful to him. It reminded him that no matter how hard you worked and how much you sacrificed, you weren’t going to make everyone happy. It kept him humble and focused on doing the right things, not what people wanted.

If Revna hadn’t been watching so carefully, she wouldn’t have noticed the pause. The lighter was not about his childhood she would wager, but she wasn’t going to pry that far.

“Did you sail in your North Sea?” He asked, and reached into the inside pocket of his jacket. Taking out a coin he looked it over, flipping it over once or twice then sliding it across the table to her. “I’m told that is a doubloon from Earth. Apparently it’s old.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

“Oh yes, many many times, for days and even weeks at a time. Where I come from our ancestors are tied to the sea. They were some of the first sailors of the ancient world, explorers, and pirates,” Revna smiled the memory making her look rather mischievous, “We often ‘plundered’ Old Gothi’s hut on her island. It was quite the adventure.” Revna carefully picks up the coin, tracing the stamping with a finger, and then turning it over. “It is, from the Spanish and British sailing fleets of South America Atlantic trade routes. A rare piece of treasure saved from Davy Jone’s Locker.” She places it back on the counter and slides it back to him.
Lt Edman, Counselor

“Gothi?” Nash asked, although it sounded more like he was saying the name to bring a memory to mind. “I saw a movie once, something old called How to Train a Dragon or something like it. There was an old hunchback lady called Gothi in it, any relation?” He grinned just slightly as Harry placed the meal he ordered in front of him, then the bartender turned to Revna.

“Gothi is a title more than a name: wise woman, shaman, healer. So yes there is a relation there. I won’t tell you how many times we watched How to Train Your Dragon as kids,” Revna said. Ah so he does smile a little.

“Did you want to order something to eat Lieutenant?” Harry asked her, moving to wipe down the bar where it didn’t need wiping down.

Nash reached out and took the coin in his hand. Without much effort he seemed to flip it easily on the back of his fingers, and then flip it over from one to the other. Once it got to the end he let it drop between his fingers and clenched his fist. When he opened his hand, the coin appeared to be gone and he picked up his drink again and adjusted his plate. “What do you eat Counselor? Your first day must have been as long as mine.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Revna tilted her head to the side while she thought, “Steak, sirloin, medium rare. No sauce. If it’s cooked right it won’t need it. Steamed broccoli and grilled onions,” after the bar tender left she nodded. “Yes it has been a long first few days.”
