“Oh yes, many many times, for days and even weeks at a time. Where I come from our ancestors are tied to the sea. They were some of the first sailors of the ancient world, explorers, and pirates,” Revna smiled the memory making her look rather mischievous, “We often ‘plundered’ Old Gothi’s hut on her island. It was quite the adventure.” Revna carefully picks up the coin, tracing the stamping with a finger, and then turning it over. “It is, from the Spanish and British sailing fleets of South America Atlantic trade routes. A rare piece of treasure saved from Davy Jone’s Locker.” She places it back on the counter and slides it back to him.

“Gothi?” Nash asked, although it sounded more like he was saying the name to bring a memory to mind. “I saw a movie once, something old called How to Train a Dragon or something like it. There was an old hunchback lady called Gothi in it, any relation?” He grinned just slightly as Harry placed the meal he ordered in front of him, then the bartender turned to Revna.

“Gothi is a title more than a name: wise woman, shaman, healer. So yes there is a relation there. I won’t tell you how many times we watched How to Train Your Dragon as kids,” Revna said. Ah so he does smile a little.

“Did you want to order something to eat Lieutenant?” Harry asked her, moving to wipe down the bar where it didn’t need wiping down.

Nash reached out and took the coin in his hand. Without much effort he seemed to flip it easily on the back of his fingers, and then flip it over from one to the other. Once it got to the end he let it drop between his fingers and clenched his fist. When he opened his hand, the coin appeared to be gone and he picked up his drink again and adjusted his plate. “What do you eat Counselor? Your first day must have been as long as mine.”

Revna tilted her head to the side while she thought, “Steak, sirloin, medium rare. No sauce. If it’s cooked right it won’t need it. Steamed broccoli and grilled onions,” after the bar tender left she nodded. “Yes it has been a long first few days.”

“So, tell me how you are finding the Atlantis,” he asked, not touching his food while Harry was off getting hers. “I have to disagree with your steak assessment though, a good mushroom sauce with shallots and a little sour cream can only enhance it.” Picking up the lighter he reached inside his jacket again and put it away. “Harry bring me a beer would you, a Lager,” he asked the man and set aside the tequila tumbler for after dinner.

Revna shrugged, “Atlantis is a bit of a beast. I like her though. And as for the steak I would agree, but plain steak sauce doesn’t do a good steak justice.” She had a marinade she loved but not from a replicator.

“Is playing Counselor on a ship like this something you aimed to do or is it a stop on the way to where you want to go?” Nash’s question was simple and he asked it in an offhand manner, but the glance he gave her as he asked it indicated it had a bigger meaning than a simple question. “Or did you plan on finding the seats of every troubled Officer before moving on to bigger fish?”

Revna’s smile lit up her whole face. She’d known he knew what she was up to, and was glad he felt like he could call her on it. “Well since you were polite enough to show up to our appt on timet now you don’t have to see me for a whole year. Unless you want to.” She left it for him to decide if that meant on or off duty. She wasn’t always Counselor Edman. Sometimes she was just Revna. She ran a risk though blatantly acknowledging what she had done. If he felt manipulated or backed into a corner this could end bad if she had read him wrong. That had happened to her before with another patient. Luckily her shirt hid the scars.

Nash actually paused when she smiled, and the corner of his mouth curled in a slight grin that was as good as a wide smile in most cases for him. Her smile was joy, an honest expression of how she felt about her work and what she did and while Nash had little use for Counselors, he could respect anyone that worked hard and enjoyed what they did. The smile reaching her copper-brown eyes, and framed by her copper blond hair, made a striking impression.

He rubbed his chin as if in thought, “Well now we have a problem, I’m sure there are some rules that some people care about around seeing patients even as friends off duty. But I can fix it, see you’re in my seat, we’re out of uniform and I’m drinking. We’re even having dinner together,” he added as Harry returned and placed Revna’s plate in front of her and Nash’s beer down. “Some observers might even call it a date.” Glancing around, it was obvious though that nobody was actually paying them attention.

A Date? How had that happened. He was messing with her, he had to be, right? It was an unconventional appt to be sure but a date?

“So let’s avoid the official story and I’m also not one to care much about rules, so let’s say you keep on scheduling official appointments and I keep ignoring them, that way I’m not your patient, Rinker can chase me officially and we can keep bumping into each other now and then, if you like. I was already informed by our new Junior Science Officer Mr Loughty yesterday that trouble finds trouble, he was in my seat as well. Oh, one more thing,” Nash said and slid over onto the one barstool that separated them so he was right next to her. “Now, there’s no gap, counselors meetings always have a gap, right.”

Rinker was going to kill her. He’d told her to take care of these appts for him. Well she had, but now…she kept her breathing slow and even. If Nash was trying to get her on the back foot he was doing a good job of it. But she wasn’t there yet. And then he was right next to her, purposely in her space. “A gap? I guess, Mr. Nash, that depends on how much you trust your counselor.” Revna could be a horrible flirt, and there was no denying Nash was attractive, but she hadn’t come to ten-forward to flirt.

“So what about your future, where do you go from here?”

“I’m not sure where I go from here. I’m not out for bigger fish, for all my sailing I hate fishing. Atlantis isn’t like where I started out, but it’s the best place for me now.” She looked very sad and troubled while answering his question.

He was quiet a moment, watching the emotion on her face. There was history there, something she was dealing with and struggling with like he was. He guessed he could just bury it deeper, or that he had accepted it and come to terms with the grief, maybe. Nevertheless he knew the emotion deeply. Nash decided the Unofficially official appointment was well and truly over, and reached out and placed a hand over hers for just a moment. “The Atlantis is a home of new beginnings for a lot of us, you’re going to do well here. Heck you got me talking, and that isn’t as easy as you probably think. I avoided Loughty yesterday cause I didn’t feel like talking to him, but then again I didn’t like his hair.” Nash smirked slightly at his own joke, moving his eyes to her braids. “We all have places we’ve come from, some are harder to leave behind. It’s up to us to make a new foundation though, right?”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Revna glanced down at their hands, surprised. Loughty’s hair? Oh, he liked her hair, but what…his words hit home a little hard. Revna always believed in being as honest about herself as she encouraged her patients to be. Sharing part of herself was nothing new, but this was different. Again she wasn’t sure if he was messing with her or was making a pass. Both possibilities tried hard to knock her off balance. If Nash was paying attention he would see a momentary deer-in-the-headlights look, uncertainty and greef pass her eyes before her light hearted demeanour returned. “No truer words have I heard.” She purposely kept her hand still refusing to acknowledge whether she minded or not.

Nash was indeed paying attention, he was watching her eyes and while he didn’t understand what caused her reaction, he was familiar with what he saw in there. Removing his hand he picked up his beer and took a mouthful. His movement was meant to be supportive and he didn’t want to cross any of her boundaries, gentle jokes and compliments included. She was dealing with something and aside from her superiors, likely had nobody to talk to about it on the Atlantis when the time was right for her. “They worked for me,” he said quietly, then admitted to himself he was lying. He had never really set a new foundation because he had never let himself.

“Just make sure you take time for yourself, Counselor. You look like a strong woman who’s the type to throw yourself into your work. Take time for you now and then. Trust me when I say the uniform isn’t everything, although it’s tempting and easier to get lost in it.” This time Nash let himself actually smile, and it was so rare that Harry actually stopped what he was doing and blinked.
