Snip

Revna glanced down at their hands, surprised. Loughty’s hair? Oh, he liked her hair, but what…his words hit home a little hard. Revna always believed in being as honest about herself as she encouraged her patients to be. Sharing part of herself was nothing new, but this was different. Again she wasn’t sure if he was messing with her or was making a pass. Both possibilities tried hard to knock her off balance. If Nash was paying attention he would see a momentary deer-in-the-headlights look, uncertainty and greef pass her eyes before her light hearted demeanour returned. “No truer words have I heard.” She purposely kept her hand still refusing to acknowledge whether she minded or not.

Nash was indeed paying attention, he was watching her eyes and while he didn’t understand what caused her reaction, he was familiar with what he saw in there. Removing his hand he picked up his beer and took a mouthful. His movement was meant to be supportive and he didn’t want to cross any of her boundaries, gentle jokes and compliments included. She was dealing with something and aside from her superiors, likely had nobody to talk to about it on the Atlantis when the time was right for her. “They worked for me,” he said quietly, then admitted to himself he was lying. He had never really set a new foundation because he had never let himself.

The counselor in Revna started to call him on that lie, but their meeting was over, and she’d pushed enough for one day.

“Just make sure you take time for yourself, Counselor. You look like a strong woman who’s the type to throw yourself into your work. Take time for you now and then. Trust me when I say the uniform isn’t everything, although it’s tempting and easier to get lost in it.” This time Nash let himself actually smile, and it was so rare that Harry actually stopped what he was doing and blinked.

Revna looked at Harry with a rather impressively intimidating look that clearly said shut up and walk away. Revna cared about everyone who came into her circle, in a very honest and sweet way, but she was also very fiercely protective of those people. And if Nash felt like he could smile like that then the bar tender better walk away.

It took a moment before Harry looked in her direction, when he did he held up a hand to indicate I saw nothing, nothing! and turned back to wiping down the bar at the opposite end.

Revna picked up her drink taking a swig as if it was a lot stronger than tea and lemonade. She WISHED it was stronger. She needed it. “Yeah, well, civi’s aren’t everything either.”

“That’s true, and I’d rather be in uniform,” he agreed, then turned to his plate and started on his lamb. “They also don’t take you new places and away from the old,” he glanced up at her, but didn’t push for more info. She would talk when she was ready, just like he would. One day, and they had time to find that day.

“So tell me about your Father who taught you to shoot? What was he like? He taught you to sail as well?”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

“My father was a great believer in remembering our heritage. My mom too, but my dad lived for it. He’s a big man, stout, much like Stoik from your movie, beard and all. He taught me to shoot when I was just barely 3. I’m sure there are pictures some where of me running across the archery range collecting stray arrows. Mom always fussed that my dad let me put stray feathers in my hair.” Revna took a bite of her food. It was decent but a tad over cooked. “My dad taught me to sail too. He lived for the sea.” Revna paused for another note. “What about you? Who taught you to sail?”
Lt Edman, Counselor

“Arrows? I thought you meant a phaser,” Nash looked at her clearly impressed. “So you shoot, sail and are descended from pirates and raiders,” he smirked. “You are an interesting woman, that’s for sure.” Pausing a moment he worked on cutting his potato before he continued speaking.

“I can shoot a phaser, actually I can shoot just about anything with varying degrees of success. But that doesn’t do much good,” Revna’s eyes getting a far away look, “in close quarters.” She tugs just below the collar of her shirt, something like a since crossing her face. Suddenly eating is just too difficult with the pain in her chest.

Nash noted the movement and followed it with his eyes, and he didn’t miss the look on her face just for an instant. There was a physical feeling attached to the memory the topic had raised. He wondered at why he wanted to know more, but he knew he wasn’t going to ask about it tonight. He just nodded his understanding.

Whatever it was obviously bothered her as she pulled at the shirt is if it was irritating. She shrugged to ease the muscles and as she did the top of a very jagged scar could be seen. Still red, swollen and healing.

“A simulator taught me to sail,” Nash admitted. “Mintara Prime is high technology and very Eco focused. Our sail boats we use for recreation are largely automated, all we do is steer. If we even feel like doing that much. The computer adjusts the sails for wind and centreboard for current, even the position of the hulls on the water in our catamarans. So I’ve sailed, but nothing like in the old movies where you’re pulling on ropes and running from side to side.”

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

“My parents can sail the old way, and I guess I could if necessary, but I preferred the onboard computer. The dragonships, yes they were really called that, are too much for 2 or 3 people.”

“They sound fun,” Nash said, and put down his cutlery and picked up his beer. “Like I mentioned earlier pirates always held a fascination for me as a kid. Of course we had none on Mintara Prime, only movies and stories. My Dad was Starfleet, he was killed in the Dominion War which is what made me sign up as soon as I was old enough. He and I used to sit and watch those movies for hours when I was a kid, he loved them as well. He’s the one that gave me the coin I showed you earlier, on the last birthday I had before he died. He picked it up on Earth when he attended the Academy, gave it to me before he returned to duty from leave. I guess he knew what was going to happen, they were dark times.

Lt Cmdr Nash, CTO

Ah, so that is the significance of the coin. Revna felt honored he’d shared that with her. She already knew he was the type of person to play his cards close to the chest. “I would say that I am sorry for your loss, but I’m sure they are empty words to you after all these years.” Revna turned so she could lean back against the bar. “My family was untouched by the war. I have some cousins in Star Fleet but they were all in the academy then. When I shipped out for my first your I was on a hospital ship. We never saw battle, just the aftermath.”
