Side Sim - Chief Science Officer's Office - Meeting the boss

Olly looked to the Becher and then back to the chief who at that moment could have been described as mad. “Sure, sounds like fun,” He said finally taking it from him and placing it on an empty works bench. Most science labs were of the same layout and only really changed in size so as he glided around the room it wasn’t difficult to find some science equipment he thought he would need.

He took the Becher, took a sample, and placed it into the computer which told him he was dealing with not just a normal rubber plant-like on earth but something else which didn’t have a name, “Proto-Rubber” Decided the scientist out loud inputting the name for future reference. It contained a much higher level of Monomers and nucleotides than standard rubber and had dormant electrons. In its current state, it appeared it would provide some nutrition and even cure certain muscle injuries with correct medical applications like a cream.

Taking a stand, clamp he assembled them and placed them next to the Becher before returning to a glass cabinet which held a heating device called a Bunson burner, most rubberised products required heat to be synthesized into something usable as well as ammonia to stop it from going solid and at first thought, he figured this would be his most viable option. He stopped, “What am I thinking! Two moments” He moved over to the replicator and quickly tapped away a blue science lab coat materialised and was quickly put on. “Better.”

Now he found some tongs, dropper, syringe, and a petri dish which he now all laid out neatly on the works bench. Taking the Becher he dropped the syringe into the liquid where he extracted only a small amount. First he wanted to see how the liquid reacted to the ammonia. Placing it on the petri dish he dragged over the microscope and placed it in a lense, his eye pressed against the eyepiece he observed as he dropped the ammonia onto the dish.

“Damn” The liquid simply evaporated meaning this wasn’t like the rubber back on Earth. He took another petri dish and applied heat this time the liquid changed color, thinking that perhaps the change in color meant the cellular state would accept ammonia he tried adding it again but this time the blue liquid gained in weight and density even cracking the Petri dish before liquidising again and spilling to the floor where it eventually evaporated. “That’s interesting.” He thought sitting back on the chair as he touched the metallic seat received an electric shock. “Electricity,” He thought curiously tapping his chin.

Taking a larger bit of the liquid which was now at half full he placed the liquid into a metallic Petri dish and placed it on a wooden frame. He replicated a small electrical unit that had both a positive and negative wire and attached them to the dish on opposite sides. He cranked the dial and a visible electrical current zapped the liquid causing it to convulse before settling into a slightly denser form.

Oliver poked the substance and it bugled but didn’t lose shape, it wasn’t entirely solid either. Placing the tongs down he pressed his index finger against it a small static shock jumped between him and the substance which then caused it to engulf his hand in a thin protective layer. “Wow!” He said thinking about it falling off and it dropped back to the surface of the workbench as if obeying him. This time Oliver thought about it again and it jumped back to his hand forming a glove-like shape. “Oh wow, this… this is something” He turned to show the other man in the room who in the past couple of hours or so he had been working had forgotten was there in his excitment. “Watch this,” He said thinking about the proto-rubber moving from one hand to the other and it quickly traversed the space between his two hands and again formed a glove around his hand right hand now. “I’m calling it Proto-Rubber or Pubber for short.”

Kai, that at that time was already building a new machine to later destroy and rebuild it better, was far from attentive on whatever Oliver was doing. He had faith for his officer and he wasn’t surely going to disturb the older and far more experienced Oliver. But as he said that he was going to call it Proto-Rubber, Kai’s hear caught the phrase and swung around the lab on a seat with the wheels
“Uh?” He looked over the substance matching shape and filling the holes like an intelligent mesh “That’s cool! Do we know what he can be used for?” The chief asked.

“I want to try something,” He said placing his hand on the worktop and moved the Bunson burner to his hand instead of his hand burning it seemed to cool, the rubber protecting him from the heat, Oliver’s eyes lit up. “A scalpel!” He said his free hand finding the one he had placed earlier and without thinking stabbed the center of his hand, the pain was instant. So his luck had run out, the rubber allowed the metal to pass through as price his skin, fortunately, the rubber, however, stopped his hand from bleeding so at least now it had at least four different properties of use. Medical, Food, and protection from fire.

“OLIVER!” He rushed to take the skin regenerator “You moron! You know that experimenting with dangerous things requires a dummy hand… let me see your injury.” He looked over the healed cut “Oh. Interesting. Next time you get me like that I’m gonna shove that scalpel in your head!” He said chuckling of relief.

“I think you’ll find this a very viable candidate to create synthetic rubber that not only protects the user from heat but is a ‘one-size fits all’ ” he chuckled before going on before the other doctor could interrupt. “Also it has some nutritional values in its liquid state and seems to cure muscular joint disorders.” he rubbed his hand it feeling cool and fresh. “The pubber too stops bleeding or at least clots the area which was penetrated, where did you find this?.”

Ens. Oliver Loughty

“Find it? Oh right. I and Lexi went for some walk over a rocky planet… to be honest not that rocky,” he started saying walking up and down the room “but anyway it was interesting because we could use it to repair tools and clothes when we ditched there! Ahaha… yeah. We tried eating it and it was kinda nice. So I asked Lexi to take samples so we could study it better.” He stopped. Taking whatever he built before, he used the replicator and destroyed it. Why you ask? Nothing really! It was a ritual like thing that Kai loved to do “It kinda hurt when you need to stop doing such beautiful things… oh well. So you certainly passed my test, mr. Oliver.” He leaned his right hand forward “So you’re ready to take this place or not?”

“Born ready,” He said taking the man’s hand with his own and shaking it firmly. “Its good to be part of the crew.”
Ens. Oliver Loughty

“Then the place is yours, Mr. Loughty.” The CSO smiled, like he never did before, gave a pat on the Ensign shoulder and with a grin he looked over the lab and then thought about Lexi “She will give fun to you, be sure to give the same fun to her!”
Walking out the room Kai whistled a melody and returned to his office, happy to have had the opportunity to get a new subordinate. Now it was just matter of time to see what was worth the new newcomer…
