Medical done, now Counselor. Then the Chief and she was ready to go. It had been easy, so far, in moving around the ship. But she had kept her head down and merely smiled and nodded in responses to murmured greetings. Till she knew what to expect, she was automatically on guard. While Half Orion females weren’t capable of the pheromonal abilities of the full blooded of her race, most weren’t aware and she knew most shrank back from contact with green women. Men most especially.

So here she was, tapping the chime on the Counselor’s door, waiting to take the next step in her boarding process. But, she admitted, it was the Chief she was looking forward to seeing.

Hearing the chime, Revna got up and opned the door. “Lt. Markeson, yes? Please come in.” Upon entering the office it was very subdued. The harsh grays and blues that came standard were replaced by earth tones of browns, bronzes, greens, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. There were several areas to sit, couches, chairs, floor pillows. There didn’t appear to be a desk anywhere. The shelves were filled with pieces of art and memorabilia that honored her heritage. The pictures were a mix of landscapes and abstracts, carefully placed around the room so as not to clash with each other. The shelves also included an array of different objects, from singing bowls, to art supplies, to mandalas. There was also a computer interface to allow patients to choose the background noise of their choice.

“Please have a seat Lt. I’m Lt. Revna Edman. Would you like anything to drink?” After the young lt. sat down, Revna spoke again. “I’m sorry to say that I’ve only just recieved your file a few minutes before I was notified that you had arrived on board, so you will have to tell me what you think I should know.” She’d read enough to know that Markeson was half Orion and they had other Orions onboard. She had no doubt about Mardusk’s and Odinson’s ability to be professional. And she was sure the Kelly nor Jen would let anyone on the ship that might be disruptive. But if she was security then she would be directly under Mardusk’s command. She needed to find out today if that was going to be a problem for Markeson.

Lt. Edman, Counselor

Angelina smiled. “A pleasure, Lieutenant.” She stepped into the room and glanced around. It never ceased to amaze her how people could so quickly set their environments to express themselves and their interests. She learned so much about the Counselor just looking around the room, that she was almost envious that she didn’t have that ability. At the offer of a drink, she nodded. “Just water, please. I can get it though if you want. Can I get you something as well?” It seemed odd to come here to be ‘checked on’ only to have the Counselor wait on her.

“You have some amazing items around here. I take it you are an artist as well?” She glanced at the art supplies a moment before looking around to see if she could pick out any of Revna’s personal pieces.

“Strawberry Lemonade, thank you.” Revna let Angelina get the drinks. She sensed the young woman needed something to do. Revna looked around the room and could see how Angelina might think she was an artist. She laughed softly, “No not at all. I do dable is sketching when I have the time, but I’m not very good. I just really love art. The supplies there are for you, or whoever else comes to visit me. Sometimes it’s easier to create, or destroy, with our hands what is bothering us, rather than put words to it. So I try to provide those opportunities.” Revna motioned to a seat after Angelina had gotten the drinks and then sat herself. “Where were you stationed before this?”

Lt. Edman, Counselor

Angelina got the water and lemonade and came back towards the woman, handing her the one she asked for. “Ahh, I get it. Sadly, not a very artistic one myself. I prefer schematics to drawing. More the technical type. Layouts of the ship, hallways, access tunnels, etcetera. I like to see how people come and go so I can protect those spaces in case it’s necessary to defend them.” She moved to the couch and settled on one end, her right arm propped lightly on the arm rest. “I think it’s great you offer so many ways for folks to relax when they are here, though. Guess it’s not always easy.”

“Thank you,” Revna took the drink and a sip of it. “There is a certain beauty in schematics though. I had a friend growing up who wanted to be an architect and it always amazed me the detail that went into designing not just the aesthetic of a thing but the practicality of it too. Hmmmmm, yes it can be difficult some times. Everyone needs something different, and I try my best, to provide that for them. It can be more difficult when I don’t know who I’m talking to. So I try to have tools at my disposal for any situation I might encounter.” She takes a sip of the lemonade and then sets the glass down. “I imagine it is similar in theory to what you do.”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

Angelina smiled. “No, not too terribly different, I guess. We both tend to see folks when they are having bad days, or at their worst. And we have to adjust to accommodate them in the safest way possible to make their situation improve.” She laughed lightly. “Though I cannot see my Chief allowing me to bring coloring crayons, or a pile of pillows to a situation.”

Angelina

Revna chuckled, “No I don’t think Cmdr. Mardusk would allow you to bring pillows and crayons for yourself, but for the right…well I guess patient isn’t the right word, but he might in that case if it was a child maybe?” Of course she’d had dinner with Mardusk and Lera a few days previously and she was certain he would get a kick out of the current conversation, though Revna would never tell him. “So what skills do you have that help you make a situation improve? For me it’s my patience and ability to pick up on small details in conversation.”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

Angelina had to think about it a moment. “I guess patience and listening skills. I know we go into situations not knowing all the facts, or even half of them. We have to make split second decisions based on single answers and actions. I like to think that, at least this far, I’ve been fair and yet professional in my dealings in such cases. I know being what I am, sometimes that brings up issues to cloud some situations, but I try and see past that.”

Angelina

“I would have to agree with that listening and the ability to analyze quickly are great asset in your profession.” Revna tilts her head to the side, “You are half Orion, correct? I thought half Orion women didn’t have the same, talents as full blooded Orions? I’m afraid my physiology is not a strong point, so I apologize if I’ve misspoken.”

Lt. Edman, Counselor

She shook her head and held a hand up to wave off the apology. “No, you are correct. I don’t have the pheromone abilities that the full females of my species have. But many don’t know that. Either because they aren’t aware that half bloods can’t, or they aren’t aware I ‘am’ a half blood. But either way, many see a female Orion and assume that whatever happens, it’s out of their control. It can sometimes cause animosity in a lot of situations. I have to remember that whether it’s fear, or ignorance, the reason for the snapped comment or shunned response isn’t really personal. It’s merely based on their life experiences to that point. And you can’t blame someone for reacting a certain way without full knowledge, can you?”

It was hard, sometimes, but with her own Department Head being Orion, she imagined it would be easier. Surely they wouldn’t think she was controlling him.

Angelina
Security

“That can be a difficult situation when others assume things about you without actually knowing you.” Revna had encountered that on a professional level many many times. “Well I think you will find, that here on Atlantis, people are not so quick to judge.” Too many on this ship and been judged wrongly and they found a place here. “Atlantis is a good place to find your way. Now I know Lt. Cmdr Mardusk, have you meet him yet? I doubt anyone would accuse him of being controlled by anyone.” His mother was also an admiral so Revna was sure he had a different perspective about Orion women. And if anyone was using pheromones on Mardusk, it was Lera. “It takes a lot of self control to face that kind of adversarial trail over and over again. I doubt you need it, but I am happy to lend my support or assistance if anyone is particularly difficult. I don’t think you will find that to be a problem in your department.”

“So Lt. what do you hope to gain out of your time here on Atlantis?”
Lt. Edman, Counselor

Angelina shook her head. “No, I haven’t met him yet. And except for his name, and knowing he is Orion, I haven’t looked at his bio, yet, either. I prefer not to be too biased before meeting Department Heads because it colors how I approach them. So I’m just gonna wait and see.” She laughed. “So no telling me about him. But it’s nice to know he’s not a push over. I know a few Orion males in the Fleet who seem to be push overs, despite their being any full blood women to control them. Wouldn’t it make more sense to exert yourself and put yourself in a more dominant role when you were able? Why would someone want to seem subservient when they don’t have to?” It was mostly rhetorical, but made no sense to Angelina either way.

Angelina

Revna had to work Really hard at stopping herself from laughing and keeping her expression neutral. Mardusk was NOT the typical Orion male....and ‘subservient was NOT a word that would describe the COS. She wanted to be a fly on the wall when Markeson met the imposing figure of Mardusk, and see how this worked out. She had a feeling that the two of them would make an impressive security team, if things worked out smoothly, in the end. “I will certainly not taint your first impression of him. I think you will both get a long fine though. And I have no idea why someone would want to do that. Not when they have a choice anyway. So what do you hope to get out of your time here on Atlantis?”
