I’m sorry guys. We can’t share tech. But,” she glanced around at the myriad of faces that were ranging from understanding, to disappointed to downright angry. “But if you help me get you back up and running, I promise, time permitted, I will help you with a couple tricks you can use after we go. How’s that?” Like any first year Cadet, and most Earth Civilians, she knew the Prime Directive as well as anyone. And it killed her to not give fellow engineers the same edge she had. But she knew she ‘could’ help them with knowledge equal to what their technology allowed.

“if that tool is common, perhaps you could accidentally leave it behind. In turn, I have a bolt of Illurian Silk, it would make an outstanding dress, or several undergarments of unspeakable sensuality and comfort.” He gestured.

“Rudolfo, go to my quarters, bring the black duffel bag.” He turned back to her, “I don’t want to get you in trouble, but if this is… common enough… we could make a deal. There are rules… then there are RULES”

Lera shook her head and kept her smile. “I’m flattered, but I can’t. So please,” she called to the man heading out. “There isn’t a need to go for the bag.” She turned back to the equipment she was working on. She’d never been offered anything for tech in the past, so it was an interesting situation to her. She just hoped she was handling it with diplomacy and not coming off at rude.

The mechanic shrugged unhappily. “Of course young miss, the choice is yours.” He signaled to Rudolfo. “Rules are rules of course.” Wel’sworth seemed to accept her answer for now. He did however continue to stare at both her technique and tools with a degree of concentration that remember someone trying to pass the final exam of a difficult test.

She nodded smiling and turned back to her work, her back to her bag as she worked. “I appreciate your acceptance. We are under orders to let civilizations grow and learn on their own. I am sorry.” She worked some more on the system and then turned back. “This is fixed. Let’s check on the others.” She smiled and moved to put her tools away.

In case she was counting, all her tools were present as she moved from task to task.

Ashlynn waited for the Captain to answer her question if he knew anything about the Pirates and what they followed or if they were completely on their own.

There were now three ships in the vicinity of the the Freighter. The Freighter was a “Nine” flagged transport so the Enodorian Cruiser Hegemony said it’s farewells and turned about returning to Base 5 at relatively low Warp since they weren’t in a rush.

Lera moved with the other engineers with her to work on the main systems that were critical. Once finished they would run diagnostics to be sure all was in order before she tapped her badge to notify the CMO they were finished.

Once she made a second sweep to be sure everything was all right, Lera tapped her comm badge. =^=Lieutenant Commander, this is Brison, we are good to go down here. Awaiting orders.=^= She nodded to the others and smiled. “Now we wait and see.”

Ashlynn responded =^=Return to my location.=^= She said and looked at the freighter captain “Looks like your ready to get back under weigh, once my team returns, we’ll take our leave of you and head back to our ship.” She said with a smile “Is there anything else you need help with?” She asked.

CMO

=^=Copy, Chief. On our way.=^= She smiled and called to the others. “All right guys, pack it up. We are done here.” She turned to her hosts and smiled with a respectful nod. “It was a pleasure helping you. You should be fine now. And here,” she tapped out a quick command on the nearest console. “I can’t share tech, but I can help a bit within other confines. Use these as your new parameters. They are a bit more narrow. But they will keep you running more efficient and it takes into account the drift on other systems. Using these new specs, you should be able to keep your systems closer in line than before with less issues.” She smiled and watched the others leave. “Is there anything else I can help with before I go?”

Engineer

The chief looked at the parameters… “How..” then he stopped. It was fairly clear now that they wouldn’t share the knowledge of the formula that Lera had used. “Thank you for your help. The seals and repairs you made are stronger than the originals.” If Lera had a month she could make the ship at least 10 percent more efficient as such there repairs were notable but not significant.

Realizing his cut off query was because of her ‘Prime Directive’ speech earlier, she shook her head and lightly touched his arm a moment. “It’s not a secret, honestly. Your ship needs repairs. And for every system that fails, subsequent systems go closer to ‘outside’ edges of operational parameters. If you can catch the first in the cascade, then get ahead of it and tighten things down, the system if forced to bolster each partnering system up.” She laughed. “Once you are back up and running 100%, you will find that these readings will vary slightly, but will stay pretty close to middle of the line for tolerances.” She watched his face as she explained and hoped it made sense. Sure, some of her tools and methods were things she couldn’t share. But the fundamentals weren’t a secret, merely a skill learned in time. And he would have discovered it himself in a few weeks of adjustments.

The mechanic looked longingly at her tool bag and shrugged. “Despite the fact you won’t share your tools. I appreciate your efforts.” Somehow the bolt of Illurian Silk found its way into his hands. He reached out and placed it under her arm. “It is yours now.” The fabric seemed to have an internal shimmer primarily a rich blue but waves of gold that appeared and disappeared almost without any explanation.
