The new CAG made the window overlooking the flight deck opaque, and leaned back in his chair. He was tired, and he yawned slightly as he looked around his office.

The desk was set perpendicular to the window so he could work and see flight operations simultaneously. On the desk was a piece of blackened, twisted metal the size of the Major’s fist. In front of the desk were four chairs, each comfortable and typical of a flight Ready Room. A few pictures hung on the walls, all the current CAG throughout his aviator career. A Marine officer’s sabre hung on the wall directly opposite the door. And hanging on a hook on the bulkhead right of the door was a flight suit and helmet and a jump bag.

Lardel looked around and nodded in satisfaction. It was good to be back.

Lardel, CAG

Lardel took a seat and began to review the flight schedule for the next few days. A tweak here and there, and after ten minutes he nodded. “That’ll do.”

Lardel, CAG

Looking out over the flight deck, Lardel’s thoughts began to wander slightly back to the last time he was aboard the Chimera. It was a short stay, but he always wondered why the brass hauled him back to Earth to teach, only to send him right back here again.

Lardel, CAG

Rebecca had been stuck in the science labs so much, recently, that she hadn’t gotten around to meeting the main supervisors and Department Heads on the ship. Realizing the CAG was new, as she was, she figured it was a good next stop for her. Well, to meet ‘officially’, anyway. Having already had a rather abrupt run in with the man already. This time, at least, she had made sure there were no ‘ops’ happening. And she remained on the walkways, not on the hanger floor.

Her uniform was neat, though probably not inspection ready. She had been moving things around in the lab with some of her scientists to make it easier to move and also to move larger containers and containment items around to the various stations without needing to constantly rely on transporters.

Her mass of brunette curls were pulled back in a coil at the base of her neck, just off her collar. The loose tendrils, ever present, floated around her face as she walked up the steps to the office and tapped the chime. Eyes of deep blue glanced down thru the bay below at the myriad of shuttles and other craft she wouldn’t be able to identify beyond the fact they were fighters or runabouts.

“Enter!” came a barked and short order and the door slid open. Lardel, behind his desk, looked and he said “Our wayward CSO. What brings you back, L-T? Trying to sneak into my flight deck again?” His tone was curt, short… but not hostile. More… efficient… than irritated.

Lardel, CAG

Rebecca nodded respectfully. “I wouldn’t dream of it, Sir. I swore I’d go through you for any other requests and I plan to keep my word. No, this time I thought I would merely come say hello and meet you in person, under better circumstances. I checked and with no ops happening for a while, I had thought I would stop by. I hope you are settling in well enough. No others sneaking into the bay when not wanted?” She smiled once more and nodded out the window to the deck below.

He shook his head and said “No. Im sure word got around. As far as settling in, it seems so. Its nice to be back aboard, I must say.” and he stood and turned his back to the CSO. “Coffee? One of the perks of the Corps… real coffee.” and he pushed a button and the sound of coffee pot warming up could be heard.

Lardel, CAG

“Real coffee?” She laughed slightly and moved towards a seat across the desk from his. “Please. That would be amazing. I admit I don’t think I’ve had a real cup of coffee since leaving the Academy. To be honest, had pretty much resigned myself to never having it till back on Earth again.” She smiled and settled into the chair, though it was a bit stiffly as if sitting in on an interview for a position she had yet to be granted. Perhaps that’s what this was, in a way. An interview for whatever position she could get in that would put her back in a less horrible light with the CAG.

“That’s right. You used to be here. Have you found much has changed in your absence? Though, if it had, I’m sure it will be back to rights in no time at all.” She nodded with a smile at the floor below them were people bustled back and forth with maintenance, stocking and work orders that seemed never ending in every department on a ship this size.

“Haven’t been away all that long. The last squadron was decent and their CAG is a man I know… decent pilot, garbage CO. I imagine he was none too happy when he got ordered off the ship and found out I was replacing him. He’s hated me since flight school.” and the Zakdorn grinned.

“I shot him down on his birthday.”

Lardel, CAG

Rebecca bit back a laugh. “Shot him down? In a simulation or because he was going rogue? I’m hoping it’s the former. Though from the tone of your voice, I’m guessing from your point of view, the latter may have been more preferable.” She smiled and shook her head imaging a grin on the CAG’s face as he shot at his CO.

“Live fire training, but shields at full power and weapons at five percent. And I can neither confirm or deny which would be more preferable.” and he took a sip of his coffee.

Lardel, CAG

Becca nodded. “Fair enough. I know better than to pry.” She glanced out at the bay once more. “I can’t even imagine the feel of being up in something like a fighter. I imagine it’s a mad fight between adrenalin and thinking straight, though.”

After a moment more, she tore her eyes from the bay and came to sit across his desk from him. “So I came to ask for your help, as well as welcoming you. There are stresses you put those aircraft thru that shuttle, runabouts and star ships never have to endure. That stress and how to minimize it to help the pilots either with combat or straight survival is what I am studying. I have a brain group, if you will, back on Earth that is studying it to help pilots do more, better, and safer things when out here.” She lifted a hand to absently motion to the ‘space’ they were in, as opposed to on planet testing. “I was wondering if you could help me? Tell me what kinds of improvement you want to see, or types of equipment or shielding or whatever else you want to make your job easier out there. And I’d like permission to measure the levels of stress in the metals of your fighters on a regular basis to see how they break down over time so we can better those odds and help with maintenance issues on things that break or wear the most because of use.” She bit her lip and took a sip of her drink when she realized she was rambling. She truly did want to help the CAG, and the pilots. She had lost friends over the years and knew others who had lost friends. If she could help lower those numbers… that’s what she wanted to try and do.
