“Of course, ma’am,” he said, noting the correction and attempting to avoid the overly English pronunciation that could so easily come out sounding like ‘mum’ in his accent. “I’ll certainly make use of the holodeck - perhaps even put on a concert if I can find a few musicians aboard ship. The arboretum on the other hand might be a bit of a stretch, I’ve never been the green-fingered sort. You’re looking at a city boy really. But you can be assured a city boy knows his home. When we’re back on Earth you’ll get the best tour of London possible. As for Elas, well that’s what I’m here for really. I’d love to visit your world and all the other new experiences out here. I’m sure our homes will seem all the more unique after all we’ll see.” Chris inhabited a smile that betrayed a decade of keenness to be where he was now, he couldn’t help but look like an excited child thinking about the mission ahead.

Ella could really see her own expression of discovery within the Ensign and it made her smile, his accent was slightly disorientating but it was both pleasant to hear and yet she felt if he ever got angry it would be terrifying. “Do you have anymore questions before we move on?” She asked, when she joined her first posting she remember she had a thousand and one questions but the chief was either too busy or just didn’t care to let her ask them.

“So ma’am, what are your expectations? How do you run this department?”

“Those are some brilliant questions, well..” The young Elasian leaned back in her chair pausing to think, she knew what her expectations were and how she run the department but she didn’t want to just fire off her mandate she wanted to show she’d thought about it. “I run this department as openly as possible, my door is always open and I encourage free thinking and promote challenge. I believe in empowering my officers giving them the space to do the tasks without having to micro manage them and it often has some great results, well so far atleast. Sometimes I do need to step in but its always for a good reason and I try to explain why I’m doing it.” She paused allowing him to have any come backs.

Chris didn’t know how he expected her to respond, but it wasn’t this. The Lieutenant Junior Grade’s approach was a far cry from the academy, he found it far less stale and much more open than the last five years of training, but wondered if it wasn’t an environment he would thrive in. Still, he said without hesitation, “Good to hear, ma’am. This sounds like a team and I’m looking forward to being a part of that.”

“The way I promote challenge is by allowing people to question my orders and even actions if they believe I’m doing some wrong or they think there is a better way of doing things, its very easy to be caught up in the ‘Im chief I say what goes’ bracket but a whole bucket load of ideas from the entire department is better than just mine and more often than not there will be something I’ve over looked. We’re all Human after all, well I’m Elasian but you get the point” Ella chuckled. “And as what I expect for you? I want you to be the best you can be, professional, punctual and turn up with the willingness to learn. Just because we made it to an active serving ship doesnt mean there are still lessons to be learned and that goes for me, educate me in things I dont know or dont understand. How does that sound?”

  • Lt JG Ella Lokaa, CoS

“That sounds like the makings of an excellent department. I’ll contribute all I can, bring my best and make sure to learn where I need. You’ll see in my file that much of my experience is tactical, ma’am. I know my way around the field of battle, at least in theory I do. I’ve dedicated a lot of time to war studies, but thankfully we’re not in that position at the moment. Much of that experience will come in useful in other areas, but I know as I find my feet in active service the gaps in my skill will show up. It’s good to know we can work on them here.”

“I’m glad you think so, between you and me im just sort of… ‘winging it’ I think you humans call it” She smiled, “Well if there is nothing else I don’t see any reason to keep you any longer, make sure you log your security details into the air gapped server before you leave join in on the gossip with the other officer I am sure they cant wait for you too tell them how this went and what you think of me.” She smiled and stood, “Welcome aboard Ensign.” She reach over to shake his hand one last time.

  • Lt JG Ella Lokaa

Chris shook Lokaa’s hand with a grin. Now I’ve made it, he thought as he replied to the security chief, “Thank you, ma’am. I’ll complete my entry straight away.” He stood up, straightened his uniform and made to leave for the main office. “Ma’am,” he began turning back for a moment, “My Ruba has a way of getting her message through to whoever needs to hear it. That ‘you’ve got this’ must have been meant for the both of us. I’ll be sure to have a word with her about addressing superior officers by rank and not as ‘darling’ next time.”

Existing, Chris was sure he wouldn’t soon forget his first time reporting in as an ensign. Nor was he sure where he’d begin if he was asked for the gossip.
