Chris had found himself a desk in the security office but hoped he wouldn’t have to be there for long. Investigations hadn’t been his strongest area during training but meeting with Lieutenant Junior Grade Lokaa had left him wanting to brush up in some of his weaker spots. It seemed to Chris that she was looking for her department to be proactive and the ship’s current orders to investigate a murder were just the opportunity to do that.

He scrolled through a PaDD loaded with investigatory and forensic manuals, not particularly taking anything in as his eyes scanned the screen, but feeling reassured by the action anyway.

=/\=Francis to Lieutenant Lokaa,=/\= he started, tapping his comm badge. =/\=Ma’am, would you appreciate another hand on this mining station investigation? I’m keen and available if so.=/\=

=^=Ensign meet me and the Executive commander in the Cargo bay and bring the forensic equipment, were going to conduct an impartial investigation before interviewing the witnesses.=^= Came to the quick response, she was grateful for his forward thinking. She turned back to the Commander as they stepped through the Cargo-bay doors. “Ok, let’s see what we have for ourselves.” For the moment she walked around the room getting a feel for it and the crime scene indicators which had already been dotted about whilst she waited for the forensic equipment to arrive.

They beamed down to an outside plaza that had triangular flagstones each with slightly different coloration. Around them was a skeletal framework that was decorative and, again, in triangular motifs which formed a broad arch over the plaza. It was humid, with the smell of rain in the air mixed with a faint metallic taste. Rain pattered on the flagstones beyond the overhead framework that doubled as an umbrella; a light force field caught the rain channeling it off to the sides.

The structure of the mine building was more that of an ancient gothic castle in a dark, pitted metal construct that was both tall and broad but bereft of battlements and instead sported two broad angular turrets that broadened in width before tapering up to and joining with the main building. There were few people around; a small knot of humans around a gazebo like structure and another group of three, evidently alien, that appeared as a cross between a preying mantis and a spider. They moved along the edge of the overhead covering apparently enjoying the dripping from the invisible eaves.

A person approached them, evidently having waited for them, appearing from the shadows of the main building. He was a burly man in coveralls and thick boots. His hair was dark and on the edge of being unkempt. His features were craggy and his jaw square. “David Stone,” he said simply in a deep voice. “Principle Foreman. Jane asked me to show you around.” He looked at the equipment. “I’ll show you to the bay.”

“Its nice to meet you Principle Stone. Please lead on” She smiled. Ella wanted to make sure that despite them being here they were still very much in control of the investigation and yes she may hold a bit of a righteously stronger jurisdiction claim she wanted to work with the local authorities not against them. She followed alongside the foreman.

“Just David, or Stone,” he said. “If you need to use your title you don’t deserve it,” he said matter of factly.

Braxton followed closely behind and watched intently as his security detail starting investigating the scene.

The bay itself was not precisely lit brightly like say a Starfleet Cargo bay. Overhead lighting hung from a tall ceiling. The lighting looked to have been put in after the fact, and didn’t look like it had been cleaned since. The bay was cool and stacked with a myriad of things from crates along one wall, to barrels along another and rows of narrow bins and shelving holding what looked to be anything from piping to faucets to office equipment to filters to ceiling tiles and so on. The ‘filing’ looked to be orderly but disordered. Their footsteps echoed in the place.

Ella automatically had a chilling vibe from the area, as thier footsteps echoed she knew that who ever or whatever was either lying in wait or knew the victim. The quiet room meant that sneaking around would have been particularly difficult. She continued to follow Stone until their destination came into view.

Along a section was a dark red tape marking a region off. It was not too far from a broad airlock style door that could fit a shuttle through. A long, well worn bench with tools was along the wall. Along the wall tools hung, while other smaller bolts and the like were in bins or jar like containers handy to whomever was working there. Welding equipment, drills, lathes and other larger equipment dotted the area nearby within the area taped off. The smell of steel, oils, lubricants and the like was thick. David looked uncomfortable and hung about behind the security team.

Ella took this hesitation as a reason to step forward and she began to exam beyond the red tape, there was an armoury in terms of weapons to choose from if one desired. “Explain to me how the incident occurred from your investigations.” She needed context behind what happened to be able to begin building a picture, the murder was a bludgeoning, “Are there any tools missing or has the murder weapons already been found?” She added.

“Sure, laying beside the deputy. Terry didn’t even try to hide it.” There was an undertone of wonder and disdain there. “I’m just a shift foreman,” he said, playing down his rank as chief, or principle, foreman. “The other deputies, I got from them, that Terry simply followed him in here, picked up a pipe and whalloped Adam with it.”
- David Stone

“Mr. Stone, where were you at the time of the murder and can anyone corroborate your whereabouts.”

Harris, XO

Christ stood by the party with a case of forensic equipment slung over one shoulder. He took careful note of the questions the security chief and first officer asked the foreman, hoping to learn how these experienced officers approached an investigation. With a PaDD he was taking down any salient details from the exchange in case it was useful to return to what Mr Stone said later. His story was pretty straightforward for now, but he felt as though there was no guarantee it would stay that way.

“I’ll take some preliminary scans, ma’am,” Chris said to Lokaa.

Stepping into the cordoned area and turning a tricorder to the tool bench he began a wide forensic sweep, wandering if he would find anything to indicate the pipe was not the sole murder weapon.
