After reporting for duty, Lunan had a little down time before the start of alpha shift, so he decided to use the time wisely and head to Sickbay to undergo his physical check up. As he crossed over the threshold into the familiar sight of the small lab-like space, he recalled the times he and his father had spent on his personal holodeck on Bajor, working on hypothetical experiments. He remembered one of the most inspirational things his father had said to him before leaving for Starfleet Academy:
Remember Farrah, do all you can to prove yourself, though it will be important to ask for help where appropriate. Farrah never did understand why his Father contradicted himself in such a manner, but Prophets willing, he would do his best.
“Good morning,” he said briskly to a Nurse running a maintenance check on a biobed, “My name is Lieutenant Lunan, I’m here for my boarding physical.”

Having caught the tail-end of his words, the nurse lifted his head somewhat quizzically to the Science Chief. An unusual look flickered across his features before erupting into a large grin once he’d married the pieces together. “Sure thing,” he jumped on an excuse to step away from this finicky biobed. “Why don’t you take a seat, Lieutenant—” he gestured to a functioning bed “—I’ll go fetch a doc for you.”

Several seconds elapsed before the nurse returned with an eccentric, razor-eyed doctor in-tow. “Lieutenant Lunan?” She approached him, extending a tattooed hand and crooked grin in greeting. “Dr Harper. I hear you’re in for physical this morning?”

She took a fleeting second to snag a medical tricorder, then gestured to the nurse to pull up his file. “Before I start any scans, do you have a history of any illnesses, injuries, random genetic conditions that somehow popped up in your thirties..” she waved her hands in a manner of you-get-the-picture “..anything to that degree?”

— Jax Haper, MD

“There is one small thing,” Lunan began, unclipping his uniform jacket and lifting his shirt to reveal what looked like the scar a radiation burn would leave behind, “I have been living with the effects of this for some time. During the Cardassian Occupation, I was often a… test subject for some of the radiation toxins they were planning to use against both the Maquis and the Federation. The Cardies did a bad job of patching me up, but it took three weeks of Intensive Care on the USS Castillo to repair it fully. Even now it flares up occasionally.” Lunan’s fists clenched as he recalled a bad memory.

Jax took a moment to digest his words. A tender smile flickered across her face as she tentatively stepped forward, her gaze wandering to the irregular, patch-like scar. “May I?” She lifted a hand in a patient gesture. Harper thought to check his skin for fibroids and inflammation on the off-chance there might be a worse culprit to his intermittent pains. But she was more concerned about the psychological damage.

“I noticed your fist clenched.” Her voice didn’t allow for softness, but there was genuine concern. “Are you talking with anyone?”

– Jax Harper, MD

“No offence Doctor, but someone who was not present on that hell hole they called a processing facility, would never understnd.” Farrah regretted being so curt and softened slightly, “Forgive me, it was a… difficult time.”

-Lieutenant Lunan Farrah: Chief Science Officer-

Confusion swept across her features, but she quickly subdued it with another smile.

“You’re right,” she nodded and took a step back to retrieve a tricorder, “I cannot fathom what you’ve been through. But I’m here to support you as a physician. Part of that is making sure you have a full circle of care. Mental, physical, spiritual — the whole shebang.” She elaborated on what she’d meant.

“I’d like to run a quick scan,” Jax added, “just to make sure everything’s in tip-top shape. Is that all right with you?”

— Jax Harper, MD

Lunan grimaced slightly in what could be described as a bad attempt at a smile, “Go ahead Doctor.” He didn’t mean to snap, but it had been a long day already.

Jax took note of his grimace, smoothly lifting the tricorder to run a quick scan. “I hear you’re the incoming Science Chief,” she opted for casual conversation, “do you have a speciality or preferred ‘-ology’?”

— Jax Harper, MD
OOC: What do the scan results say? :) — Trin

Lunan automatically went into presentation mode, “Chemical engineering has always been my strongest field. I have experimented with several unstable elements in the past; sometimes with slight injuries as consequence.”

OOC: Nothing major, just a bit of an overactive mind, scientist gonna science. ;)

-Lieutenant Lunan Farrah: Chief Science Officer-
OOC: Cool beans! :)
IC:
Slight? Somehow ‘unstable elements’ doesn’t give me the ‘bumps and bruises’ kind of vibe,” Jax shook her head with a slight chuckle and tapped the tricorder. “Can you describe your recreational life? Like… do you practice meditation or engage in daring adventures on the holodeck?”

— Jax Harper, MD

Lunan gave that same grimacing grin, “Work is my recreation Ensign.”

-Lieutenant Lunan Farrah: Chief Science Officer-

Jax’s shot him a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ kind of look. “Lieutenant…” she set the tricorder down “…do you find anything concerning about that statement?” There was a slight deadpan in her tone, but she dismissed it. Besides, the counsellor was better suited for a discussion on mental health than she was.

“Beyond slight hyperactivity in the cerebrum, I’m not picking up on anything suggesting you’re ill-equipped for duty. Do you have any questions, comment, concerns–” she waved her hands, trusting he got the picture “–you want to address?”

— Jax Harper, MD

Lunan gave the young MD a somewhat similar deadpan look before replying, “Nothing that springs to mind.” He rose, straightened his uniform and asked, “Will that be all?”, before automatically making for the door.
