After catching a slight break in the action with the search for the Shogun, Freja examined her messages. It was too bad that her CMO had been unable to continue aboard, she wished the Doctor well.

Fortunately they didn’t need to look far for the replacement.

Tapping her badge, =^=Andreassen to Doctor Harper, please report to my ready room when convenient for you.=^=

=^=Harper — understood, Captain. I’ll be there shortly.=^=

Jax slipped her finger from the commbadge, shifting her dark gaze to the security ensign situated on the biobed before her. “Can you repeat to me what you need to do?”

A grumble escaped their throat, their eyes drifting to the arm cradled protectively against their chest. “Rest,” they echoed, “and ice if there’s swelling.”

“Mhm.” Jax tilted her head, a quirked brow imploring them to finish their instructions.

“And…” they sighed somewhat dramatically “…report back tomorrow to check up on the bone.”

“Perfect,” Jax skimmed over the PaDD nestled on their bed, “I’ll have another doctor give you some terakine for the pain. Otherwise, do you have any questions?”

They rolled their eyes to the ceiling in a pondering gesture, “how long will I be off duty?”

“If you listen? Maybe a day or two.” Jax smirked. “If you don’t? It could be longer and far more painful. I suggest you get your hypospray and go read, relax, or whatever you like to that doesn’t involve using that arm.”

They nodded, relinquishing to Jax the consent she needed to continue. “Fantastic!” She snagged the PaDD from the bed. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Don’t do anything foolish.” She winked and offered a parting wave.
Seconds later, she found herself before an older doctor. “Hey, Doctor Taqot, do you mind giving biobed six, ten cc’s of terakine? They got a nightstick fracture.”

“Sure,” Taqot nodded, following her gesture to the Ensign aimlessly swinging their legs. “Where are you headed?”

“I have a meeting,” she knit her brows together. “I’ll be back shortly.”

“Fine…” he smiled and waved her off. “Go, I got this.”

“Thanks!” Jax handed him the PaDD and rushed off to meet the Captain.

Jax lingered before Andreassen’s ready room, her lips pursed in thought. At the time, it hadn’t occurred to her to question why the Captain needed to speak with her. Was she hurt? Her tone was void of urgency, and her words were too fluid to suggest laboured breathing. Had Harper made a mistake? The thought didn’t surprise her, but she couldn’t think of anything particularly heinous in the past week. Shaking her head, Jax brushed away her idle speculations and stepped forward to palm the chime.

— Jax Harper, MD

“Come in,” Freja called, causing the doors to slid open with a hiss, “Ah good, Doctor Harper, do come in, have a seat.” She gestured to one of the chairs facing her desk.

Harper slipped through its metal doors, her gaze drifting to the Captain. “Thank you,” she hummed and settled herself into a chair across from her. “Is everything all right, ma’am?”

— Jax Harper, MD

“Well, yes and no,” Freja replied, “Unfortunately Doctor Harper-Ryan was required elsewhere and has been reassigned, that leaves medical without a Chief Medical Officer. However, I’d like to directly offer you the job and promote you from Ensign to Lieutenant, Junior Grade. The promotion is effective regardless of whether you want the department head position, but I’d like you to take it. I think you’d be an excellent CMO and would certainly ensure that sickbay on this ship continues to run smoothly.”

Jax took in a silent, controlled breath and absorbed the gravity of Andreassen’s offer. Tempted to decline, as she’d never been one for the grip of administration, something provoked a nod of tacit acceptance. “I appreciate your faith, Captain,” her words were fluid though her eyes betrayed traces of ambivalence and shock, “and I accept.”

Several moments later, Jax tugged at her uniform and added.. “with the technicalities out of the way, what do you need some medical right now?”

— Jax Harper, MD

“I would report to Commander Harris, he will likely want someone from our medical team to review any autopsy the mining colony preformed on the murder victim and if they haven’t preformed one, to do one,” Freja explained, “They want us to do a proper investigation into the murder, so we’ll want to cover everything.”

Jax mulled over the Captain’s words, then offered a terse nod. “Naturally,” she observed in appreciation of the colony’s request. Tempted to ask about the murder victim, she hesitated, trusting Commander Harris would arm her with the information she needed. “Understood” Harper continued, “with your permission, ma’am, I’d like to get started.”

— Jax Harper, MD

“Absolutely, if you require anything else for this mission, be sure to let either Commander Harris or I know,” Freja finished witha smile.

~Freja Andreassen~

“I’ll keep you apprised, Captain.” Jax rose to her feet, tugging once at her uniform, “thank you.” She delayed until a sure dismissal met her senses. Then, escorted by a terse smile and tempered nod, she slipped into the corridor and headed off to find Commander Harris.

– Jax Harper, MD

“You’re welcome. I’ll let you get back to your work, dismissed,” Freja finished with a smile.
