“Major.” Someone said from outside Andrew’s office. “Permission to enter?”
“Granted.” Andrew responded. Whoever was outside, they felt nervous, probably new to the base. Newbies always got edgy reporting to the CO. A young Lieutenant entered.
“Sir. A priority message has arrived for you.” The Lieutenant offered a PaDD which Andrew took. He read it over and considered for a moment. It seemed he had been transferred without request. “Lieutenant. Locate Captain T’Prell, tell her she’s in command of the unit effective immediately until a new CO is issued.”
“Yes sir.”

Onboard the shuttle, Andrew read what he could of the Chimera but what was available didn’t bring him to any final conclusions. He’d just have to see for himself. New assignments always brought a certain nervousness, but Andrew tried not to let it show through.

The shuttle settled on the chimera and the hatch opened. A Vulcan Corporal awaited Andrew. “Major Knox. Welcome to the USS Chimera. I will take your belongings to your quarters while you report to the Ship’s Captain sir.” Andrew rose from his seat and walked over. “Are you here under a superior officer’s directive or simply to remind me of the standard operating procedures?”
“The latter sir.”
“I appreciate the honesty Corporal.” Andrew handed her his bag. “Complete your task and then await me in my office.”
“Yes sir.”

Andrew walked to then Captain’s ready room, stewing slightly. He was certain this was just a case of someone looking to move up the chain by being the first noticed, but it was still a vague irritant. He came to the ready room door and pressed the chime.

“Come,” Freja called, looking up from her paperwork to see who was the welcome distraction from one of the more tedious tasks of command, her dark eyes scanned the officer, seeing the marine rank on the man’s collar as the door slid open, “Major,” she greeted, resting her hands on her desk while waiting for him to introduce himself and explain why he was at her door.

Andrew entered and stood at perfect attention. “Major Andrew Knox, reporting for duty as Commander, Marine Battalion, USS Chimera.”

He offered her a PaDD. “My transfer orders, service record and other associated documents.” Andrew was a man of few words and strict discipline it seemed.

“Ah, you would be the Battalion Commander I requested,” She nodded, “Welcome aboard. I won’t keep you long,” she paused briefly, “We both have our orders and our jobs to do, so I will start and end with my number one rule. I won’t tell you how to starfleet marine if you don’t tell me how to starfleet captain. I have found that simple directive to be the easiest way to establish a working relationship. Do you have any questions or concerns you wish to bring to my attention at this time?”

She chose to keep things short, knowing most marines generally didn’t care for rambling, but she felt it important to lay out her one main expectation. She’d watched so many of her colleagues flounder when working marines in the past and the vast majority of the time it was because they expected marines to behave like starfleet officers. By laying out this expectation in the first meeting, it was her hope that both Major Knox and herself could remain mindful of the fact they both came from different training backgrounds and to focus more on establishing a rapport of mutual respect rather than animosity.

Andrew nodded, appreciating her brevity. He thought they would work well together. “I will be implementing a new training regime, and I will be needing to make significant use of holodeck facilities for a week to conduct drills to test unit readiness. Beyond that we will be ready for action at a moments notice Captain.”

-Major Andrew Knox

“Understood, coordinate with my XO, he’ll make sure you have the holodeck time you require for the training,” Freja nodded, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll let you get organized and down to work.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Andrew saluted again. “The unit will be at your disposal.” He turned and left, thinking about how wonderfully efficient that meeting had been.
