There were few things going on with the ship that Freja didn’t know about. It was her training, her first fighter squadron CO had taught her that he always expected everyone to do their job, but that one needed to keep an eye out just in case things fell off. Pretty much ever since she came into department head roles, she put a priority on ensuring she knew everything about whatever was in her scope of responsibility, whether she needed to actively address something or just let things play out.

She had inwardly smirked when she learned her XO had gone down to greet the marine fighters, having served with Lt. Colonel Lardel on the Chimera before, she was pleased when the powers that be announced he’d be returning. It was good, she knew what to expect of him and his fighters, nothing but excellence.

It would be interesting to see what came of the meeting between the two men. While she was never a marine, she had flown fighters as part of strictly starfleet operations. There were stark differences, of course there were, but both marines and starfleet fighter pilots tended to dislike involvement from non-fighter personnel. The good ones were able to tolerate involvement to a point, but they definitely would assert their boundaries early and without filter.

It was something she felt her XO would need to learn on his own without her direct involvement, she would be available for advice when needed, but personnel management was something better learned by simply doing and learning from one’s own mistakes. So instead, she sat in her office, dusting off more paperwork and enjoying a caramel coffee.

~Freja Andreassen~

The computer chirped as in incoming text-only message arrived. It was from Lardel.

=/\=He’s. In. My. Office.=/\=

And then another a few seconds later.

=/\=He. Was. On. My. FLIGHT. DECK.=/\=

The last one had a small laughing face symbol behind it.

Lardel, CAG

Anyone walking by the CO’s Ready Room then probably heard the cackle that left Freja’s mouth as soon as she read the message. At least she hadn’t been taking a drink of her coffee when she got the message, it would’ve been somewhat embarrassing to explain to the quartermaster why her computer terminal was coated in coffee.

=^=Hopefully he didn’t express an interest in learning to fly one of the fighters. Though if he did, I trust you’ll set him straight. Welcome back to the Chimera Lt. Colonel,=^= She typed a reply back, her shoulders still shaking a bit from laughter.

A personnel management, it could be both a challenging and amusing aspect of command.

After auditing the personnel files for the Chimera crew, Keitah noticed it had been some time since the CO had a mental evaluation and couldn’t help but wonder if it had been intentional. Nonetheless, the encounter should be interesting as Captain Andreassen was Betazoid herself. Grabbing her PaDD from her desk as she stood, Keitah wondered about Freja’s telepathy skills and if the session might be communicated telepathically. Duty calls. Time to attempt to pry into the personality of our CO. she thought as she headed for the exit.

After stepping off the tubolift onto the bridge, Keitah approached the Captains Ready Room. Before entering she paused for a quick listen. There was laughter coming from behind the door. A smile spread across her lips and she ranged the chime. “At least she seems to be in a great mood,” Keitah said out loud.

Naisyr, Counselor

Freja glanced up at the door chime, she wasn’t expecting anyone just yet, but perhaps whoever it was would temporarily give her a break from the paperwork.

“Come in,” She called.

~Freja Andreassen~

At that moment, the computer beeped again. Another text. =/\= Your XO needs a remedial lesson in rank structure, Captain. He called me Majorin front of my staff. As this is a Fleet matter, I’ll leave it to you to handle it.=/\= and then a brief pause before another message.

=/\= Good to be back. =/\=

Lardel, CAG

Sweet baby Jesus, Freja managed to not utter it out loud since she’d just invited whoever had chimed her door into her ready room. The thought definited bounced around in her brain though.

~Freja Andreassen~

OOC: That’s twice now me misreading a thread has turned into a funky character arc for my character, I promise it’s not deliberate xD

-Kieron-

OOC: Hey, I think its hysterical. Loving that dynamic!

James

Keitah walked in as the conversation went on. After a brief intermission she said to the Captain, “I am sorry for not notifying you ahead of time that I planned to stop by, but is this a bad time for you?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“No,” Freja replied, “It seems I have some time to spare, what can I do for your Counselor?”

~Freja Andreassen~

Keitah smiled and went to an open seat then sat. “Well Captain… I am here because I thought this would be a good time for your psych evaluation.”

She placed her pad on the desk, tapped the screen to wake it as she said, “First I want to say it’s an honor to serve under you, sir. You are the only Betazoid female Captain I have met, although I am sure there are others. I won’t ramble because I am sure you are far too busy for me to do so. Therefore I will just get to the point.” She clasped her hands infront of her on the desk, stared at the Captain a moment then said, “So Captain can you tell me the last time you had an evaluation?”

Naisyr, Counselor

OOC: Aw man! I was about to jump in on this, but it seems like this works better with just the two of you, I’m happy to start a fresh thread if you prefer?

-Kieron-

OOC: A separate thread will be lovely Kieron. :)

IC:

Freja thought back, mentally thinking, “Well, you’ve caught me Counselor, it has been a while. I suppose we can do that now.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Great! I don’t want to assume anything but being Betazoid I would think you have at least emphatic abilities and possibly some telepathic ones as well? Believe me I know the difference between the two although they are often used incorrectly and interchangeably. If you are capable of either, we can continue our session using either one of those if you prefer?” Honestly Keitah wanted to test the efficiency and the strength of the Captain’s abilities.... if she possessed them.

Naisyr, Counselor

“I’m telepathic, not as strong as a full Betazoid, also I’m horribly out of practice,” Freja replied, “I wasn’t raised on Betazed, rather both my parents were officers so when I wasn’t with them, I was on Earth with my grandparents who were an admiral and a retired officer respectively. I tended to not focus on those abilities, mainly because people tended to get squirrely when you brought up something they thought about.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Ah yes. I understand what you mean.” She said with an agreeable nodded. “Well we shall conduct this session like non Betazed’s then and I absolutely do not use my telepathic abilities unless there is an urgent need to. I understand how people are about their minds and their thoughts and best practice ensures that I do not trespass into any mind.” She looked around for a replicator, “Do you mind if I fix myself a cup of before we get started?”

“I’d like to start with your vision for the this ship. What yould you like to accomplish as Captain of the Chimera and how do you intend to do it?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“Of course, help yourself to my replicator,” Freja gestured to the device in its corner.

Freja leaned back at the vision question, giving it some thought, “As perhaps predictable as it sounds, I do firmly believe in the tenets of the Federation and my goal with the Chimera is to ensure that this ship is doing what it can to…adhere to those tenets, as well as we can, given the ship is a tactical marvel versus a ship more build exclusively to exploration. I suppose I intend to accomplish that goal by ensuring that each department runs smoothly and cohesively with the rest of the departments.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Yes, of course. So you seem to be someone who likes put together a high performing team, then you let them do what they do best. Which I personally appreciate because having someone stand over me or check on me frequently would just drive me away.” She walked over to the replicator and began to fix a cup of tea. “Can I get you something?” she asked before she got to her next question.

“You say you have been out of practice when it comes to using your abilitiy. Do you miss it or do you find it easier to function without it? As a Betazed you know our ability engrained in us, you know like a sixth sense. I am just curious how you function with it?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“Oh nothing for me, I still have a latte to nurse,” she gestured to her cup on the desk.

“I guess you could say it’s more like I’ve gotten used to not having too many opportunities to participate in telepathic discourse,” Freja paused, thinking how best to phrase things, “When I was a teenager and my abilities started to surface, my parents had decided I should stay permanently with my paternal grandparents so that I could attend the same school for a few years in a row. In that situation, my grandmother was the only Betazoid around. She taught me to use my abilities in a way that wouldn’t rub against the cultural norms of growing up on Earth, I guess would be the best way to explain it. The abilities are still there, they always have been, but I guess I find it more comfortable to screen thoughts and emotions out…as it’s what I learned to do so that I could fit in with my non telepathic peers as a teen.”

~Freja Andreassen~

Keitah nodded as the Captain explained. It was beginning to become more and more common for Betazoid’s to control their abilities like the Captain was doing and like she was also doing. It’s no secret that when people hear the Betazoid they instantly become uncomfortable because they connect the species with intruding into their minds and uncovering private thoughts.
How long did it take you to master screening out thoughts and emotions from others? I must admit I have not fully mastered it myself. My weakness being if I am upset or distress, I loose my authority to control my abilities. How about you?” She walked back to her chair after the replicator made her tea.

She took a sip then said, “It must have been hard to separate from your parents. Did you ever have the chance to see them again?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“Emotions tend to muddy my ability to screen, it took a lot of practice. My grandmother, having lived among Terrans for most of her adult life, had been quite talented and was able to help me master my own technique. By the time I joined Starfleet at eighteen, I had a good handle on it.” Freja explained.

“I would say that being away from my parents was tough, but I guess it helped that my grandparents had served and I attended school with a lot of other children whose parents served, so while it sucked, I learned to accept it as reality. My grandfather was an Admiral before retiring when I was eighteen, so I attended school around the San Francisco area,” She explained, “Until they died, I saw my parents as much as possible, they were quite involved in my upbringing and managed to balance their service in the fleet with raising me and my younger sisters Andrine and Amalie. They were both killed in the line of duty, my father when I was seven and my mother when I was eleven. It was tough, but my grandmother being a doctor did not shy away from having me and my sisters attend therapy.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“I am sorry to hear your family has encountered many tragedies. I was not aware you previously had two sisters. So by any chance are your grandparents still living?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“My grandmother still lives, she helps Amalie with her civilian medical practice on Earth, still quite active, though we’ve noticed she’s started to slow down a bit,” Freja replied, “My grandfather passed away after a brief illness about ten years ago. Both my sisters chose not to serve in the fleet, I think they felt the cost was too high, whereas I always felt the call as long as I can remember. Amalie, as I mentioned, runs a civilian medical practice with her husband in Melbourne Australia and after my grandfather’s death, my grandmother wanted a change and chose to move there with her. Andrine serves in the Diplomatic Corp and travels across the quadrant doing various things with that.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“My condolences on your grandfather.” She gave a slight sad nod before she continued, “So you felt a calling? What was this calling? Was it exploration and adventure or was it to enlist, move up in the ranks as you have done and sit in the center chair? You must know, Captain, that you have achieved a remarkable accomplishment. As I mentioned before, I, personally, have not know another Betazoid to command their own ship. I am not sure what your parents achieved during their service, but even if they did accomplish what you have, it’s still an amazing feat due to its rarity.” Keitah meant every word, but there was also a reason she was highly praising the Captain. How the Captain reacted to these admirations would help her determine what kind of being she was dealing with and weed out any potential narcissim, although she doubted that any traits of the sort existed within Freja. She was Betazoid after all and Keitah could not help but to be a little bias.
“Your sisters, they seem like high achievers as well. Are they older than you?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“I originally joined as a pilot,” Freja explained, “I’d always found the concept of flying a ship, fighters in particular, fascinating. My grandfather encouraged me, teaching me about different fighters in Starfleet. I went through the academy with a focus on that, with a secondary focus on engineering. I figured I better learn how to maintain the fancy machines I’m charged with driving. I eventually was assigned to a fighter squadron and worked my way up to commanding it. My grandfather was the one who suggested I might enjoy a new challenge of command. I suppose it was simply my environment that lead to the calling, I was interested in fighters and starships as a whole and where better to learn about those things than in Starfleet? I was, as you might imagine, pretty exposed to what Starfleet was, it was literally all around me growing up.”

Keitah nodded as she took her notes.

“My sisters are younger, I’m five years older than they are.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“The oldest of siblings are often natural leaders, and their caeer work usually reflect this, so I should have known.” She said with a smile. “I think we are almost done but I do have one more question I would like to ask you, “Is there anyone special is your life. Someone you are seeing whether seriously or not?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“When I was working my way up the fighter squadron, I met my husband, who was the first officer of the Starbase I was assigned to with my squadron,” Freja explained, “My husband is currently Captain of the Valkyrie. Hallis is a Vulcan, which probably makes us an interesting couple to say the least, but we’ve always managed to make it work.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Yes that is one of the more unusual matches I have heard of, however not the most unusual, I have a half Human/Romulan cousin who is happily married to a Klingon.”

She thought back to the day of her cousin’s Klingon wedding. She had only recently connected with her distant cousin, Sifeda, because a DNA scan from a medical exam reavealed they both shared a common ancestor through their human DNA. Sifeda had already been engaged to her fiance, Se’noj, and the wedding was approaching. Sifeda had asked Keitah to be her guest as she had no other family that could attend, because her parents were far away on some distant plant.
The ceremony consisted of many Klingons from the groom’s side of the family reciting several ceremonial poems and the beating drums as the groom and bride walked out together, both dressed in leather bodysiuts adorn with shoulder, chest, and leg armor. Then the couple was presented with bat’leths where they then began to fight each other. As the rest of the wedding party seem to enjoy this and cheered on the fight, Keitah sat there, clutching her chest, and obviously concerned for her cousin. What couple willing fought on their wedding day!
Her favorite part was when Sifeda and Sen’oj recited thir vows. Keitah found this to be quite romantic and she was impressed at the fluency in which her cousin spoke Klingon. At that moment she could see why Sifeda had chosen this unusual mate....until the Klingon guests began screech battle cries and proceeded to attacked the bride and groom. Sifeda and Sen’oj had to fight to fended them off as they stood with their backs to one another! Even though it was all tradition, as Sifeda explained later with some minor cuts and bruises, it was the most unsettling wedding Keitah had ever witnessed.

“In any case, Captain, I felt very unprepared for our meeting today. She scrolled through the PaDD and continued, “I saw nothing about your husband in your file. Has it been that long since your last evaluation?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“It’s been a minute for sure, part of the issue is there’s been some turnover in the CNS office,” Freja replied, “I’ll be honest, whilst I’m good at seeking help when I recognize that I need it, I’m terribly absent minded when it comes to regular evaluations. That’s why I’ve always tried to make a point in telling my CNS that they shouldn’t hesitate to corner me for an eval as I’ve probably forgotten about the whole venture. Hallis and I married shortly before I took Command of the Chimera, it’s not something we advertise. As you might imagine, being Vulcan and all, Hallis is intensely private about his personal life. I tend to keep things a bit more private than I might otherwise where he is concerned out of love and respect for him.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Careful what you say Captain. I will definitely corner you if you miss an appointment. I hate to say that some of the crew surely find me annoying for that reason.” She cleared her throat, “So your husband’s name is Hallis? Is it okay if I make some notes in your profile about your husband? I mean you are not secretly married…are you?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“No, we are not secretly married,” Freja laughed, “Fortunately my in-laws were accepting of our marriage. Well, as accepting as Vulcans appear. So no worries, make what notes you need.”
