Ruth Rutherford teleported aboard the USS Chimera in her nurse’s blues and her hair coiffed perfectly for her meeting with the Captain. She always believed in an immaculate first impression.

Even though she was still an Ensign at 52, it wasn’t because she didn’t take pride in her work or her appearance. In fact, Starfleet had been shuttlecrafting her from ship to Starbase for decades whenever they needed medical help–even in 2399, the nursing crisis was real.

She made her way to Deck 23 of the Mjolnir-Class vessel and slipped into the Conference Room. She checked her watch–15 minutes before her appointment–and smiled. She didn’t exactly know what she was walking into, but danged if she wasn’t ready to bandage up some Marines if need be and get to meet the Captain.

She sat her valise down on the conference table and pulled out a small red notebook and pen, for notes.

About five minutes prior to the appointed time, Freja rolled into the conference room with a coffee in hand. She was on the younger side of a Captain, just about 40 years of age, with blond hair that she kept secured neatly in a single plait that today was resting over her shoulder.

“You must be Nurse Rutherford, I’m Captain Andreassen, welcome aboard,” She greeted, her dark eyes taking in the scene.

Ruthie stood to greet the Captain.

“Thank you, Captain Andreassen,” she said. “I am Ruth Rutherford, yes! Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.”

She took her valise off the conference table self-consciously and tucked it under the table as so it was out of the way and retook her seat.

“You have a beautiful ship! Mjolnir Class are special vessels,” Ruth said, a little reverently. “I spent a couple years on the USS Vajra in Cardassian space.”

“Oh good, so you have some experience treating marines,” Freja replied with a grin, “I’m quite used to working them now, but I find some people when they first join the ship struggle a bit as they are under their own chain of command essentially. Colonel Lardel is excellent though and committed to ensuring that his marine wing are ready for business, so I’m sure he’ll listen with an open mind to medical when necessary.”

“Most of the time, they’re trying to beg me to let them back on duty before the doctor clears them,” Ruth laughed. “It hasn’t happened yet.”

“Doctor Hall, I’m sure will tell you when she’s back about the medical department. Right now she’s completing her isolation after being exposed to Kamaraazite Flu,” Freja explained, “I’m told she’s doing fine and should be back up and running in a few more days. I’m sure the medical team will be happy to have another set of hands to help out down there as well.”

“I’m glad to pitch in until the Doctor is well again. The Kamaraazite Fluis no joke,” Riluthie said sympathetically, her eyes looking toward the desk. Ot was never an easy decision to quarantine, but that’s what a crew was for.

“As a nurse, my main goal is to support the health of the ship,” Ruth said firmly. “I have my oath and I do keep it seriously.”

“Excellent, just what I like to hear from medical staff,” Freja replied, “Do you have any specific questions about the ship or should I just leave you to head on down to medical and get an update from them down there and of course you’ll want to check in with my Counselor, otherwise she will hunt you down,” she joked lightly.

Ruthie knew she was capable–always had to be–but she felt a difference inside her chest this time. This ship.

“Other than the obvious,” Ruthie said, ever the teacher’s pet, “What can I do to best support the ship? I’m used to staying confined to Sickbay, but I do want to offer my services as you see fit.”

“Aside from your medical duties, I’m not entirely sure, but I like the open mindedness of that statement. Certainly if you can think of something that you’d like to try, you can let your DH know or bring it to my attention or the XO’s attention,” Freja explained, “I like to try new things if someone is willing to spearhead a project. I am a firm believer that brilliant ideas don’t just need to come from me, why should I have all the fun. If I find a project that I think you might be a good fit on, I’ll definitely approach the subject with you.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Wonderful! I do look forward to working with you and everyone aboard the Chimera,” Ruthie said. “If that is all…”

She stood to leave the room.

She gathered her notebook and tucked it into valise. She had so many questions for the Captain about the ships past missions or her background but they could wait for another time.

”…thank you so much for your time,” she said. “I think I will take that advice and head straight to counseling and medical.”

She reached out one hand for a shake. In her time at Starfleet, she’d been shuffled around from ship to station to ship that she’d been through similar meetings, but she felt like maybe the Chimera could prove to be the one.

Freja accepted the hand and shook it firmly, “Perfect, I’ll let you get down to work. Again if there’s anything that you notice that could improve the health of the crew, definitely let us know.”

Ruthie left the Conference Lounge with a crisp salute, valise in hand. Her next stop was the Counselor and then to her room before getting aquiainted with the Marines and then Sickbay later that day.
