Lastly it was time for Scott to complete the check-in that he was least looking forward to. It was time to report to the Counselor.
Scott held no personal malice against counsellors - in fact he quite admired them and the work that they do. But because of Scott’s troubled past, conversations with Counsellors always proved to be difficult and awkward. This was helped in no small way by the fact that Scott was definitely a closed book. But no more. He had come aboard the Chimera with the clear intention of making himself into a new man. So he was determined to be open with this Counsellor - no matter how painful that might be.

He soon found himself standing outside the Counselor’s Office door. He reached for the door chime but hesitated a moment. He breathed out heavily through his nose and slouched slightly, he felt slightly disappointed with himself for hesitating.
‘Come on’ he whispered quietly to himself ‘You’ve got this’.
Unsure whether he believed himself or not, he straightened himself up again, tugged down on his tunic top and brushed his hair to one side before finally pressing the door chime.

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

LeKeitah heard the chime, but instead of saying Come in. she stood from her desk and walked over to the door. As she approached the double automatic sliding doors, they opened. She looked at the Security Ensign and smiled. “I am sensing some anxiety and I swear I heard a loud sigh before you rang that chime. “Let me guess you don’t like Counselors?” Keitah extended her arm out toward a sitting area that comprised of two cushioned armchairs with a small table in the middle.

Naisyr, Counselor

“Oh… hello” Scott said, slightly taken aback by being met at the door instead of being asked to come in. It was a pleasant change from the norm. “I mean, Ensign Gallahan reporting, Ma’am”
Scott walked over the comfy looking chairs and gently sat down.
“Please Ma’am, don’t take it personally” Scott said apologetically as he explained his apprehension. “I have a great respect and admiration for counselors, it’s just in the past, my meetings with some counselors haven’t gone very well… which was often my fault. But things aren’t gonna be like that anymore.”
Scott fidgeted in his chair slightly and tried to be more at ease and confident.
“I’m Sorry, I’m a bit nervous… but I guess you already knew that” He chuckled nervously.

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“Aww....I rarely take things personally. Welcome aboard. It’s always exciting to get new crew. To me it is new opportunities to build meaningful relationships. ” She sat in the chair across from him. “I am anxious to hear about your past experiences…with other counselors. What was so off-putting about them that now you are nervous to even pay a visit to one?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“Well, at the beginning I always thought it was the Counselors” Scott began. “They always seemed so keen to touch on sore points of my past. So eager to start digging and prodding… but over the last year or so I’ve been taking a long, hard look at myself, and I realised… it’s me. I’ve been the problem. I was quick to anger. So damned irritable all the time.” His voice had a mixture of disgust and disappointment as he explained. “It’s like I always had a chip on my shoulder, or an Axe to grind with everybody. Nice people who only want to help, or to be friends, and I was so…” He paused a moment and looked at his feet “Hateful.” He paused for another moment before recomposing himself and looking back at the Counselor.
“Well not anymore. I have decided that things need to change… I need to change.”

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“I see. It can be a bit traumatic for a person to relive moments of their life that caused them stress or trauma. It’s not your fault Counselors make you uncomfortable. Hopefully, after we have talked it will help steer your perspective in a new direction.” She sat in the chair across from him. “The great thing about connecting with me during these sessions is that you can be yourself. You don’t have to worry about me judging you or being offended by anything you say. My job is to listen to you and if you ask for advice, to give you the most reasonable and logical options available. So why don’t we start with where you were before you got to the Chimera? Are you fresh from the Academy or were you stationed on another ship?”

Naisyr, Counselor

Scott took a deep breath and sat back in his chair a little more. This meeting was already going to be one of the better ones he’d had with a counselor.
“Well… after the Academy I was originally posted aboard the U.S.S. Asimov. I wasn’t aboard very long though. It just wasn’t working out well at all - my fault again. So I decided to take an extended leave of absence. I went back home to England and reconnected with my Mum, I tried to do the same with Dad but that… uh, well…” the words seemed to evade Scott for a moment. “Um… yeah, that didn’t go so well. But at least Mum and I talking again, so one out of two isn’t bad, right?” He said, trying to keep things light.
“After that I took some time to myself. I traveled and tried my best to lose the angst and anger that had caused me so much upset. That went pretty well and I met some amazing people along the way. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel so much better than I did…”
Scott blushed slightly when he realised that he’d been talking quite a lot.
“So yeah…” He said shyly ” I decided that I wanted to come back to Starfleet and make a good go of it this time. After all, to serve in Starfleet has been an aspiration of mine since I ‘left’ home. So here I am.”

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

She was curious about the strained relationship Ensign Gallahan had with his dad also why he seemed to have a hard time on the Asimov. However instead of diving right into those subjects she decided to start on something more positive. She would eventually work those into the conversation. “You are from England?” She asked, “I have read about that area of Earth. I was taken by those beautiful stone structures they call castles. So much history that has endured during the centuries. I hope inspite of not being able to connect with your father you otherwise enjoyed the time you spent there?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“My time on Earth was splendid!” Scott beamed. “Castle are such magical places! It’s crazy to stand in them and try to imagine what they must of been like during those times. If you like castles and things then you would love where I grew up. Nottingham is fantastic place for Fokelore like a fellow named Robin Hood and his band of merry men! I just wish I taken the time to appreciate these places as a kid, but at least I can experience and enjoy them all now. “

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“Oh yes, I read that story, Robin Hood. It’s one of my favorites. I heard that it was loosely based on actual events which makes it all the more intriguing.” She said with a smile. “Tell me about your mother. I am sure she enjoyed having you home for a bit.”

Naisyr, Counselor

“My Mum is a wonderful woman” Scott smiled as he spoke “She is calm, and patient and fantastically creative. Despite everything that has happened over the years, she is just as kind and loving as ever.” The love that Scott held for his mother could be clearly heard in how adoringly he spoke of her.
“As I grown older I’ve realised how much I admire her and how much I’d like to properly get to know her. So that’s why my time spent on Earth was all the more special. Thanks to all the creativity that seems to flow around her I have even picked up a couple of my childhood hobbies again” He chuckled.

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“I can tell how much you adore your mom, a very famous 21st-century actor described his mother as a walking miracle. Come to think of it, that seems to be an accurate description of most mothers.” she said with a smile. Then she paused before she asked the next question, “You said despite all that has happened to her. Did she experience some sore to tragedy or hardship?”

Naisyr, Counselor

“I was just referring to all the years that she spent stuck between my Dad and I fighting and arguing… it must have been so horrible for her” Scott sounded guilty. The emotional pain his mother must have suffered through for all those must have been a horrid time, and he resented himself for having inflicted this on her.

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“I see.” Said Keitah solemnly. “Why don’t you talk a little about the conflict between you and your dad? Can you recall when it first started? Do you know what caused the rift between your two? Only talk about what you are comfortable with.”

Naisyr, Counselor

The question made Scott feel slightly uncomfortable, but he pushed on regardless. “Well…” He began “It’s complicated” He snorted out a slight laugh. Of course the situation was complicated, that much was obvious.
“It’s funny really…” He continued “When I think back I can’t even remember what started all of this. I don’t suppose Dad can either. I think it was just a case of us being too much a like in certain ways. We both have a temper and we are both strong willed. I wasn’t greatest kid though… that used to upset him and he would chastise me, so then I would just go out of my way to anger him. We would just rub against each other constantly. It seems so silly now, honestly.”

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

Keitah frowned when he said he wasn’t the greatest kid. “Did your dad tell you that you weren’t a great kid or did you give that label to yourself because of the conflict with your father and the fact that he chastised you? Before we go any further Ensign Gallahan, I want you to know that whatever conflict that transpired between you and your father was not your fault. You were a child and your father was the adult. It was his job to reassure you when you had challenges and to also protect you. So as we move forward I want you to keep that in mind. Whatever has happened between you and your father it was not your fault.”

Naisyr, Counselor

“I know” Gallahan said softly as he forced a smile, but he didn’t believe it though. Scott knew he hadn’t been the best son a father could wish for, and he certainly never tried to repair the damage that had been caused when he was younger. In some ways he felt responsible for the way things had turned out to be.

Ensign Scott Gallahan (Security)

“Do you want to repair your relationship with your father? Do you think it’s something you are willing to do and more importantly do you think it’s something he is willing to do?”

Naisyr, Counselor
