Shinzo was laying on his couch with a very red and soaked bandage around his hand. he didn’t even try to do a proper bandage. He just didn’t care anymore. He was drinking his rum by the bottle and was getting pailer by the hour. He had a lot to think about with his encounter with the counselor. What she said mostly made sense and so did what he had to say and the fact that she was a piece of crap and bad at her job made him mad. In fact, no one form his squad will go and see her and they will see someone else.

Major Shinzo Honda, “Oni” Brave Squad Leader

There was no knock, no chime… no nothing. The door simply slid open…

And Lardel walked in.

He moved to stand next to the couch and shook his head. “Oh for… get on your feet, Marine. NOW.” he said, and the look on his face said now was not the time to argue.

Lardel, CAG

The Major hadn’t shown up on the flight line to go over the patrol routes for the day. Siraa had gone over it for him. She assumed his appt with the counselor had run over. She didn’t mind covering the brief for him. That’s what they were there for; it wasn’t a big deal. But when a few hours later Siraa hadn’t seen him, she sent Vapor to find him.

Vapor approached the door and heard the colonel barking out a ‘NOW’ Vapor did a quick about face and walked away to report to IRIS. No one wanted to be near the Colonel when he sounded like that. Vapor was totally sure she hadn’t done anything to incur the Colonel’s wrath, but better not to be in his line of sight.

IRIS and Vapor

Shinzo stood up fast, too fast and became dizzy from the sudden blood rush and alcohol but managed to stay on his feet and saluted. “Major Honda reporting as ordered sir.” He said in a slightly slurred voiced.

Major Shinzo “Oni” Honda,

Lardel’s jowls shook as he clenched and unclenched his jaw over and over. “Gods be damned, Shin… you are on fu<%!ng duty!!” He noticed the bloodied hand and cursed… loudly. Slapping his commbadge, he barked =/\= Corpsman to Major Honda’s quarters. NOW. IRIS, get your ass up here too. =/\= He put his hands on his hips and shook his head. “Tell me what the hell happened, then.”

Lardel, CAG

=/\=Aknowleged Colonel.=/\= What now? Siraa fell into a steady jog from the flight deck on 13 down to the aviator barracks on deck 16. She let the Corpsman enter first. Siraa noticed the blood drops on the floor. Her eyes followed it about the room and then landed on the drunken figure of Shinzo and his bandaged hand and the absolutely livid visage of Lieutenant Colonel Krin “Hannibal” Lardel. “Zztann!”

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

“I know sir.” He put his head down in shame and then raised it up. “I was pouring my heart and soul out to the counselor after I went in to apologize for the night before. She agreed to have a session with me. Then I noticed a couple of things. One, I think I have a person disorder and I do not want it any longer, after I realize that I used this Oni thing to get me past the hard times, well now I am comforatble with where I am at and am afraid to let it go and the damage that it might cause if Ido. The second, I found out that she really wasn’t listening and did not take anything I said seriously and was just like, “This is just another session and you mean nothing.” I just snapped sir. I mean I have never done that before. I snapped and I was hurt that I told this lady things I wouldn’t tell my wife, if I had one. Then when I got out of my stoper, you were here yelling at me. That is what happened.” He felt ashamed of himself that it went this badly.

Major Shinzo “Oni” Honda, Bravo Sqd Ldr.

Lardel just shook his head. He looked at the Corpsman and said “Fix him up. No one knows about this, Doc. You copy?” The Corpsman looked at Lardel. Even though he was Enlisted, the Corpsman had a special relationship with the Marines they served with. Technically Star Fleet Medical Personnel, Corpsmen were specialized first responders trained specifically to serve with Marines. Doc Mcallister said “Really, Colonel? You’re gonna say that to me?” and he knelt next to Oni and unwrapped his hand. “F#ck.” he said. “Glass in it. Bad, but no ligament damage it looks like.” He ran the tricorder over it and gripped the wrist in one hand and pulled a pair of tweezers out. Mcallister was ‘Old School’, but a better medical tech no one knew of. “Oni, this is gonna hurt. Don’t twitch.” Lardel glared at his friend and said “He’s got a little pain coming, I think.” He then looked at IRIS. “Captain, you are the acting Group XO. You good with that?”

Lardel, CAG

“I understand Doc and I also understand Colonel. There needs to be.” He just stood there, motionless and unflinching while the Doc took care of his hand.

Siraa watched as Mcallister went to work on Shinzo’s hand. She would cuss again if it wasn’t so unprofessional. What was up with him lately? Was he cracking up? He let that uppity counselor get to him again?! Come on. She shook her head, white curls bouncing. “Yes Colonel.” But she caught Lardel’s gaze for a long moment. No she wasn’t good with it. She would cover for Shinzo any time, step in wherever she was needed. She was NOT however good with whatever was going on in here. When did Shinzo steal her call sign?

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

Shinzo nodded to Iris. He knew she was uncomfortable with the wording of the order but Oni knew it was for the better right now. Iris was a great choice. He understood and knew he wasn’t fit to lead at this moment and when he got better, he still wasn’t. He needed to be mentally fit a well and he knew the Colonel would make damn sure of that before he got his command back.

Shinzo “Oni” Honda, Bravo Squad Leader

“Fine. Major, you are grounded until further notice. You are also restricted to your quarters. Doc, make sure he’s good to go. IRIS, on me.” Lardel said and he walked out of the room and into the hallway. “Come with me. And not a fu<&ing word in these halls.” and he marched through the passageways in complete silence until they walked into his office.

“I understand sir.” Was all Shinzo said as he waited for the Doc to finish. Once the Doc was done he asked him to help him box up all of his booze and told him to hold onto it for him. There needs to be a change in his life and that was the calling. “Go ahead and keep all of it. I won’t need it again. Thank you for your help.”

Siraa fell into step beside him, marching along at his pace. Even if Siraa could come up with something to say, she wasn’t dumb enough to say it, here, in the corridor. Shinzo was on Lardel’s list now and she had no desire to be on it too. Really if she was honest she now had a list and Shinzo was on hers too. What was going on with him lately? And the glass and cuts and the blood. It was everywhere. He hadn’t even tried to clean up, just let it keep bleeding, and then drunk on duty. Nope, Siraa was good and mad too by the time they entered the flight deck and climbed the stairs to his office.

Lardel was never one to lose his cool. Oh, they had seen him mad, but no one ever saw him so mad his lost control… until right then.

Before IRIS could sit, Hannibal grabbed his helmet off the wall and hurled it at the window looking out over the flight deck. It hit so hard the face-shield shattered and Hannibal started to cuss a stream of profanity so epic in it’s heat and creativity, anyone overhearing it would swear he was speaking an entire language based only on obscenities.

IRIS didn’t flinch, just watched as the helmet flew past her nose and the shield broke. His aid stepped out of his office at the sound and the cussing. The flight deck paused and looked up. Siraa just took a step further into the office and let the door close behind her. She prayed they were all smart enough to get back to work and be busy for hours to come.

Finally, he calmed down and flopped into his chair. He opened the desk drawer, pulled out a green bottle and two glasses, and filled both to just below the rim. “Drink. Then we discuss.” and he took a large gulp.

Lardel, CAG

Siraa eyed the glass before her gaze slid to the Colonel, disbelief and wariness. Did he really just offer her alcohol? She decided very quickly a smart ass response was not in her best interest. She sat and picked up the glass taking a measured swallow of it. Ice take him, this was a mess.

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

Hannibal took a large drink and then looked at IRIS. “What. The. ACTUAL. F%<k. Was. That?” he said slowly and deliberately. “How the hell did he get this bad, this fast IRIS? He was fine when we got here. He was fine before we departed. So what the hell happened?!”

Hannibal

“I don’t know. He was fine. We took both squads to medical for their physicals and he was his normal self. That mix of cutting up and in charge. He was fine on the flight line. His patrols have been standard. Ahrasath! He wasn’t fine at that gathering. That’s the first I noticed anything wrong. When does Oni get in more trouble than me?” Not that Siraa went looking for trouble, it just sort of happened. “Want me to go ask his squad?”

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

Lardel shook his head. “No. I don’t want this going around. If it gets out too much, I’ll have to bounce him back to 1st MarDiv on Terra. So we have to keep it quiet.” He thought for a long time and then said “Your impressions of the ship’s Counselor. Tell me.” he said.

Lardel, CAG

Siraa was quiet for a very long moment. “She strikes me as someone who is more concerned with appearances than substance and needs people to like her. To the point of meddling and seeing people to act in the way she needs rather than what is really happening. For example, teasing Oni for flirting with Ruthie when he was just being nice.” IRIS shrugged with a sigh, “I think she is…soft. You know I have had my share of time with counselors, but I don’t think she is prepared for treating Marines and how different we are, by necessity, from Star Fleet. I am not saying she isn’t good at what she does, just nit a good fit.”

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

“For the Corps, I agree.” he said and downed the rest of his glass and put it away. “I tried to tell her. To explain that Fleet and Marines dont tend to mix well. I even told her that the standard approach for her isn’t applicable to us.” H eshook his head and gritted his teeth. “She just. Didn’t. Listen.”

Lardel, CAG

“That goes along with my over all impression,” Siraa shook her head. “The thing is these forced socializations never go well. People, both sides, get it in their head their going to be better than the other. They end up acting all kinds of stupid. What’s really disappointing is if left to themselves, people usually find others they can get along with. But then they are forced together and they resent it, like we’re wayward school children.” She finished the drink he gave her and set the glass down. “I just don’t get what’s wrong with Shinzo. I mean she’s not a fit for marines, but he went off the deep end.”

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

Hannibal nodded. “Yeah… he did. Twice. Once at the ‘party’… and now this. Honestly I’m wondering if there is something wrong with him medically. He’s never shied away from a drink, but he’s always been able to handle his booze. Hell, remember that fast-react call we got on the Halifax? He was supposed to be off duty, so he was in the lounge on his third bottle. He still beat us both off the deck and torched four bogeys. So how the f^<k is this the new norm?”

Lardel, CAG

She remembered that call out, and Oni never let them forget it either. Siraa’s antennae stood straight up in agitation and then curled slightly back. “I had to take beer away from him. When does he get drunk on beer?” She leaned forward, elbows on knees. “I think you may be right that there is something medically wrong. We went to medical together, we even shared a biobed because the doc doubled us up. As far as I know, everything was fine. He was cleared for duty. I didn’t stay though, we had the 3 squads in here with us and trying to get settled too. I can’t imagine that Shinzo would hide something from us. He wouldn’t put the group at risk like that.”

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

Lardel thought for a moment and then tapped his comms. =/\= Hannibal to Oni. When you have decided to sober up enough to walk in a straight line, report to sickbay for a full physical. I’ll contact the CMO and tell them you are coming. Do not reply, Major. Just do what you’re told. =/\= The anger in his voice was easy to read, but to those that knew Lardel it was the sheer disappointment that was paramount.

Lardel, CAG

Lardel’s disappointment was soul crushing. Siraa, despite being IRIS, had manage to avoid that so far. Oh she’d made him made plenty, but never disappointed. Any other time she might feel bad for Shinzo, but honestly she was just angry at him with a twinge of concern. She glanced out the window of Lardel’s office to the flight line. Cpt Jeremiah “Dice” Johnson. “Want me to call Dice up here? He’s going to have to lead Bravo. And we have that op in less than 24 hours.” She cursed again, d@mning Oni to the coldest hell she could think of.

Mar Cpt sh’Rharror, Delta SQLD

“Do it.” Lardel said and then stood up and started pacing. “I’m going to have to rethink the Op.” he said out loud, but more to himself.

Lardel, CAG

Siraa got up from the chair and stepped out of his office, she walked along the gangway scanning the flight deck for Dice. She spotted him by his bird talking to one of the mechanics. She slid down the more ladder than stairs and made her way over. “Johnson, come on.” She didn’t wait for him to answer, she just turned and made her way back to Lardel’s office. She closed the door once they were both inside.

Mar Cpt sh’Rharrr, Delta SQLD

Johnson was by the bird and heard her yell his name and in a tone he didn’t like to hear. What did I do now. He thought while picking up the tools and placing them back into the bag. He hurried up to the Colonels office and reported by snaping to attention since the door was opened. “Captain Jerremiah Johnson reporting as ordered ma’am!”
