Commander Halloway would receive the following message:

YOU HAVE AN UPCOMING APPOINTMENT WITH LT CMDR ARBOGIST FOR MENTAL EVALUATION SCHEDULED AT 2100.

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

Sam hated… absolutely /hated/ this part of coming on board a new ship. She hated digging up the past, talking about drinking, and talking about… him. But, it is what it is… Halloway would always say to herself and today was no different. Stopping outside the door, she hit the chime and waited.

Halloway, XO

Bumpity?

The door opened and revealed a warmly lit office. In one corner sat a large sectional sofa with two large plush armchairs facing it and a circular coffee table in between. On the other side of the room sat a desk, from which a man stood and approached Sam as she entered. His hair and eyes were black, his skin pale

“No need to be apprehensive,” he said, holding out a hand in greeting. “I’m Simon Arbogist, your new ships counselor.”

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

Halloway stepped through the door and smiled apprehensively at the Counselor as she walked to meet him, extending her hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Counselor.” Samantha said in a timid tone, her hand was slightly clammy and there was a slight tremble in her noticeably weak grip.

“Do you mind if I grab a seat?” Though looking into Simon’s eyes, it felt as though Samantha was almost looking… through… Simon. It was certainly clear that the massive ship’s Executive Officer was nervous as all hell about being in that room.

Halloway, XO

Simon nodded. “Please make yourself comfortable. Would you like anything from the replicator? I was just about to have myself a nice warm mug of spiced apple cider. It’s a little something I discovered back in a farm on earth, in Pennsylvania.” He smiled.

Sam settled into her seat and sighed softly, internally deciding to try and not be unnecessarily difficult, because unpacking her past was already hard enough… she didn’t need to be an ass to the man who drew the short straw of having to deal with one of the most difficult officers in Starfleet. “Sure Counselor… I’d like a cider if you don’t mind.” She was nervous, Simon would easily tell the internal struggle the young woman was going through but with a brave face… she was determined to see it through. “How long were you in the Northeast?” Halloway asked a little unsteadily.

Halloway, XO

Bumpity! ;)

Simon soon returned to her with two mugs of steaming spiced cider. He handed her one gently, and then took a seat himself.

Halloway took the beverage and carefully took a quick sip, her mouth feeling suddenly dry. “Thanks Counselor, this is actually really good.” A soft smile crosses her face as she watched the man settle.

“Well, with all the traveling to other planets we do, I have made it a mission of myself to explore some of Earth when I get the chance,” Simon said. “I spent a few weeks in the Northeast on a shore leave, there is some beautiful country there, still untouched by major development or technology. Quite a little slice of heaven.” He smiled, sipping his cider.

“More of a West Coast girl myself…” Sam began honestly. “… only made it to the East a few times… Broadway Weekends, taking in an Angels game in Boston, and the week my friends and I spent at the Smithsonian summer before our Senior year of high school. So, unfortunately, the only times I’ve been over have all been to big cities. Now I wished we’d have spent more time on the road!” She had been so busy lately, she rarely had time to think at all but now… thinking back on on those great summers with Sam and Dev, she couldn’t help but smile. Sadly, as quickly as it came… it was gone. Reminders of the challenges thrown up against her over the years since hitting her square in the face.

“I sense you have a lot on your mind,” Simon said. “You do not wish for me to pry into your past, I can respect that if that is your desire. As senior officers I do think getting to know each other a little better is beneficial in our shared command duties. What is something about yourself that you feel comfortable sharing with me?” He leaned back, sipping his cider again, taking her in both with his physical senses but mental ones as well.

“Well… I guess the first thing to do is get the cat out of the bag and get it over with.” Sam’s shoulders slumped. “I have had a long problem with drinking… it… it started after my fiancé was lost on a Spec Ops mission…” She didn’t look up. “… the kind of mission they present the medals for to your next of kin. He…” Her voice caught in her throat. “… Bryan didn’t tell me the type of mission it was and we were going to get married when he got back. Needless to say…” Halloway looked at her empty ring finger and flexed her hand. “…it never happened. I spent a good portion of the next five years in the bottle and nearly lots my career over it. Thankfully…” A gentle smile crossing her face, her eyes rimmed in tears. “… I got another shot, but I’ll never be an active pilot again… too much risk.” The last words came flat… like they were being quoted from a report.

Halloway, XO

“You may not be a pilot, but you’ve achieved enough to merit a command position,” Simon said. “Tell me, what has been your road to the position of First Officer?”

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

“Honestly…” Halloway sighed with a soft smile. “… I’ve been a Flight Leader, TopGun Instructor and a CAG. Pretty straight-forward on the pilot side but after Devri got the XO slot at OP 42 a few years ago, I felt I had reached a peak in my career and went private sector… had my own ship for a while. But, about a couple months ago, after my ex and I had split up and I had chosen to return home to San Fran… Command came knocking, apparently wanting someone with a pilot background to help launch this carrier. The rest… “Sam said with a cocked smile and a shrug. “… as they say, is history.”

Halloway, XO

Bumpity

“I see,” Simon said, nodding. “May I ask are you divorced or merely separated? Do you have any close personal relationships with any of the members of the crew?”

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

Sam couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the suggestion. “God no…” Halloway began. “Andrea and I never tied the knot, not really her style. Hell… barely my style! After Bry’, I don’t think that a ring is really in my future. As for friendships, I haven’t really been able to meet a ton of folks… yet. The new CAG’s a nice kid, Skipper is a sharp guy but that’s about the only folks I’ve really met with personally. And you of course.” She smiled warmly.

Halloway, XO

Simon nodded. “I look forward to meeting the crew and hopefully making a few friends in the process as well.” He paused, studying her a bit more closely. “What of me? Do you have any questions for me as the newest addition to your crew?” Normally he would check in with the First Officer and Captain upon boarding a new ship, but since she was here, they could kill two birds with one stone as the saying went.

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

Halloway was caught momentarily off guard by the question but then re-geared her mind and asked. “Honestly, the only thing I was curious about was what experience you had with large Ships companies? The Chimera is huge by most Federation standards. What plans do you have for addressing the Counseling needs of such a large crew?”

Halloway, XO

“I was stationed on Outpost 49 for a time,” Simon said. “We had a fair crew compliment there. I always enjoy getting to know people and assist where I can. I’ve already set up meeting with most of the senior staff here. I think it’s important for the senior staff especially to be on the same page when it comes to commanding a crew. I think I will be able to keep up with the needs of the crew.” He gave her a smile.

-Counselor Simon Arbogist

OOC: I will be posting tomorrow. It’s been a really busy week and posting has taken a hit. Very sorry!

Jerome
