The Zakdorn walked through the passageways, back straight and eyes forward, still in his flight suit from his arrival. His helmet in the green jump bag he carried at his side. He made his way to the turbo lift and then went to the CO’s Ready Room. Walking up to the door, he simply pressed the chime and waited.

Maj. Lardel, CAG

“Come,” called the female voice from inside, the doors parting to reveal a fair-haired lady in her late thirties at her desk. She glanced up as the doors parted, revealing the dark eyes characteristic of her mostly Betazoid heritage and enabling the Major to see the captain’s pips on the side of her uniform collar.

Lardel walked in and snapped into perfect ‘Attention’ posture. “Captain. Marine Aviator Major Krin Lardel reporting. I am your new CAG, Ma’am.” Krin wasn’t all that tall, but he was broad as was typical of the Zakdorn species. The folds of flesh below his eyes and down his cheeks was also typical. What was new, if she had dealt with the Zakdorns previously, was the perfect Marine regulation high and tight hair cut and the flight suit. It was obvious the new CAG had not stopped anywhere between the hanger where he landed and the Captain’s office. Indeed, the flight had docked less than ten minutes prior.

Lardel, CAG

“Excellent, welcome aboard Major,” Freja replied with a smile, “At ease.”

~Freja Andreassen~

Still looking straight ahead, he fell into the appropriate legs apart and hands behind his back pose. “Thank you, Ma’am. All fighters and transports have docked and are being added to the Chimera’s flight manifest. Outgoing personnel are prepped and will be departing in fifteen minutes. The squadron will ready for operations within twenty four standard hours. I have set staggered overwatch flights at regular intervals anytime we are not at warp.”

Lardel, CAG

“Very good,” Freja replied, “Be sure to alert either myself or the XO if there is anything lacking with the fighters or the personnel so that we can request that for you. Do you have any questions for me about the ship or how I run my command at this stage?”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Yes ma’am, I do. What do you believe the role of the Squadron is on this ship, Ma’am? And how do you see your role with regards to the Squadron? I ask, ma’am, because I have butted heads with carrier Commanders before. I’m not here to cause trouble or be difficult, Captain. But I have particular standards I hold my aviators, pilots, and Marine support personnel to… and I dont want those standards relaxed because you dont feel them necessary.” It was odd that he put ‘aviators’ and ‘pilots’ in different categories.

He was still looking straight ahead, but paused and then said “Permission to speak freely, Captain?”

Lardel, CAG

bump

“Granted,” Freja waved her hand in invitation, clearly he had something to get off his chest. When she was a fighter pilot, she often had similar encounters with carrier commanders herself. It was sometimes hard to deal with a commander who never flew fighters before. Rather than brashly charge ahead with her own thoughts, she’d rather hear what Lardel wanted first. Particularly because she was never a marine fighter pilot, she was not so full of her own hubris to assume what she did and what Lardel was doing were exactly the same thing, so her hope was by listening to the Major she could gain some useful insight.

~Freja Andreassen~

For the first time since he entered, he looked directly at her. “Captain. I will never tell you how to run your ship. To that end, I will back you up in front of any god, prophet, or Fleet Brass that thinks to tell you what to do. And I will stay out of your way unless you ask. That being said… I would appreciate the same consideration when it comes to the Squadron. Nothing personal… I’ve just learned from experience that the Fleet and the Corps way of doing things isn’t always the same. And in the Squadron, we do it the Corps way. Consistently.” He cocked his head to the side slightly and then said “You let me run the Squadron the way it needs to be run, Ma’am, and I’ll make sure that this ship and all her crew know that the Black Sheep will always give them their all when it hits the fan. And you’ll be happy with the results… that I can promise, Captain.”

Freja nodded, knowing now why she was assigned to this ship, most COs she had the misfortune of crossing in her own career would have bristled at this talk, “I think we can agree on this Major,” she spoke, “As a rule, I expect all members of my senior staff to run their departments as they see fit and I trust them explicitly to do so…until they give me reason not to. I was a fighter pilot before I came to command, not in the corps, of course, but I learned then that you need to trust those working with you and under you to get the job done or you won’t go anywhere. I don’t know everything, nor will I ever pretend that…unless it’s to the enemy, I won’t let them see weakness,” she paused with a dry laugh, “I was never in the marines, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some in the past, briefly, but I won’t pretend to have a freaking clue how you guys run things, so to that end, I will defer to your expertise in that regard.”

Taking a sip of her cooled coffee, making a mental note to replace that after she dismissed the Major, she nodded, “Is there anything else at this stage Major?”

~Freja Andreassen~

Lardel came to attention and said “No, ma’am. You’ll have flight schedules and training sortie information in your files by morning.” was all the Major said in return. It didnt show, but he was relieved to have had the talk. It had gone much better than it had with the CO onboard the first time Lardell had landed on the Chimera.
