“You realize I have no point of reference for what you’re on about?” Orin said with a smirk.

Gen. Shuan walked over to Ashur with a concerned look on her face. “Lieutenant…” She began politely. “… would you mind… at least… telling me just what’s going on?”

Gen. Shuan

“Sorry General. I am going to rescue the rest of our party. I have done this before and I know what I’m doing. Commander Losc will stay behind and coordinate with you and the Dresden. If at all possible General, could you please create a distraction for me?” He said as he took off his uniform top to reveal a black under shirt.

Just as the General was about to speak, an alarm sounded in the Centre. “General Shaun! Sensors indicate a shuttle craft leaving the Forbidden Zone at a high rate of speed. Two on board… one male, one female… both human.”

Shaun turned to Ashur with a smile. “I think we found your Captain, Mr. Ashur”

Condor

“Well, I guess they don’t need rescue then?” He replied sadly, knowing what was coming. “What about the base in the forbidden Zone?” he asked curious.

-COS

General Shuan pursed her lips for a moment and then began. “For the past 10 cycles now, the area of our world where your shuttle went down has been the sight of numerous… suspicious disappearances. Legends grew around it, telling of a mysterious… structure… that if seen, one would never return. A cycle and a half back, the area’s Recon Team actually stumbled on a large gray building… completely hidden from view by air and almost completely covered by vegetation.” The General sighed and continued. “There were two miracles that day… that the team found it, and that they survived to tell the tale.”

Tapping a panel on the console in front of her, the General brought grainy video up on the screen. A team of several men and two women where moving through heavy vegetation when one of the women swore and walked ahead of the party. Ashur could clearly see the woman move toward a structure of some sort. She then reached up and pulled back the vegetation. General Shuan paused the video and there it was, clear as day. Below the crest of the United Federation of Planets were the words:

FEDERATION SCIENCE COUNCIL
ADVANCED CIVILIZATION REMOTE OBSERVATION FACILITY
SFI-387-C

“As you can see, Mr. Ashur…” The General spoke flatly. “… the facility at the heart of the Forbidden Zone is, or at least, at one time was… your’s.” She then hit play on the recording. Moments later, a battle cry that would send chills up Ashur’s spine echoed through the room. The language, the appearance, the uniforms… Ashur would know immediately… Jem’Hadar. The squad of Jem’Hadar shock troopers stormed over the top of the facility, firing rapidly. Returning fire, the Recon Team bolted from the area. The video cuts a few moments later, the team running for their lives.

“Thankfully…” Shuan sighed. “… all five made it back alive, though two were gravely injured, one only leaving care last week.” Pausing for a moment, she smiled… slightly… and continued. “When your… First Contact… officer made contact shortly after our hyperdrive test two months back, you can imagine… we were a bit… suspicious. The Premier spoke with a Commodore Loveland and shared the video. With many apologizes, she explained that it was Federation Policy to observed but not interfere with any friendly civilization approaching the capabilities of faster than light travel as to be prepared to welcome said civilization into the intergalactic community once we had reached that particular technological milestone. Ms. Loveland also informed us that the facility had not been in service for over two Terran years, do to standard pullback procedures when light speed obtainment became imminent.”

Running her hand through her hair for a moment, she continued. “Commodore Loveland advised us that they believed they knew who the attackers were and with our permission they would investigate and if possible, remove said threat. We never from her again. Two weeks ago, we received word that the Dresden was en route to establish formal diplomatic relations with our people and we were honestly relieved… hoping that with formal ties to the Federation, we could finally have the resources to eradicate those that… haunt… The Forbidden Zone once and for all.”

Condor

“I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.” Orin said deadpan before cracking a smile, “I loved that line. But seriously, the Jem’Hadar are like bugs that are really difficult to get rid of.”

Orin looked around noting the massive amounts of work that the facility was calling for. It pulled at him but he wasn’t sure he would be allowed to do anything as he was technically an outsider.

Hannibal nodded, deep in thought. “They are indeed. This Commondore Loveland failed to mention that when we were briefed on this mission.” He paused as he considered his options.

“I doubt that the Dresden will be able to provide much support. I think we are back to me going in there alone. But I will need a distraction, and” He turned to Losc. “A way out there with a bang,”

-COS

The General sighed but couldn’t help the slight smile. “It’s your funeral Lieutenant.” She chuckled and then continued. “We can get you to within a kilometer of that facility but my people go no further. You’ll be on your own. We do…” Her smile widened. “… have a rather vast array of artillery. If a boom you want, a boom you’ll get.”

Condor

“I’m an engineer not a demolitionist, but I’ll see what I can do.” Orin responded as he started looking around for things to make an improvised explosive with.

Orin paused and turned to Hannibal.

“Why are you going in there in the first place? The Dresden can literally vaporize the area from orbit. Is this some hero complex you have going?”

-LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

Hannibal understood both concerns, he turned to face Losc and the General. “I understand. It’s not a death wish or hero complex. I spent almost 20 years in Star fleet intelligence. In that time I spent many years undercover. I also don’t like unanswered questions. They captured our Captain and Intelligence officer for a reason, they invaded your planet for a reason. I would like to find out why. I will only get that information with your approval General, this is your planet.” He offered.

-COS

Orin shrugged and turned away. He was going to see if he could whip up some small charges with smart proximity detonators.

Shuan had to like the man’s… spunk? With a slight smile, the General gave a simple nod. “Then you should know, while our Artillery is very accurate, we won’t go in there until we know for certain these… creatures… are gone. It’s just not worth the risk. If you just need explosives, we can happily give you all that you can carry. Sound like a deal?” She smiled wider.

Condor

It was at that moment that Hannibal realized that he was getting ahead of himself. He wasn’t sure why he hadn’t realized it before. Maybe it was because he so desperately wanted to prove to everyone in Starfleet that he could still do that job. Maybe prove to star fleet that he was completely innocent in what had happened with those children. Prove to everyone that he still had it. Or was he just trying to prove it to himself.

“I’m sorry General, I seem to be getting ahead of my self. I didn’t even think to ask if you even wanted intelligence on who and why these creatures were here on your planet? I became so focused on trying to rescue my shipmates that I didn’t think to ask you for permission.” He felt a little deflated at how he had let his ego and his own personally quest for redemption to interfere with his judgement.

“Lieutenant…” General Shuan said rather softly. “… we’ll all been there. We want to help others, to do more than just stand around. It’s what makes us human after all, right?” Walking to Ashur, she patted the young man on the shoulder. “It takes someone special to stick their necks out for others in times like these. And it takes an even more special person to want to really get their hands dirty in finding a solution. You do what you feel you need to do, Lieutenant. My people will assist in what ever way we can.”

Condor

Hannibal smiled, “I want to get that intelligence, it is what I was trained to do. Do you have anything that can mask my body heat? If not, I’ll find some mud along the way.” He asked, as a plan started to form in his head.

-COS

The General smirked. “We broke the light barrier, Mr. Ashur…” And with a wink, added. “… we have what ever camo-tech you might need.” Motioning to the Squad Leader that had brought him in. “Get the Lieutenant what ever equipment he might need for his mission.” The man nodded “Yes General” and waved Ashur to him.

Shuan

Hannibal followed the captain out of the room. “If these are Romulans, it will make things easier. I spent a lot of time with them over the years.” He explained, “What i’m thinking is that I’ll sneak in there undetected and try and access the base. As I leave, I’ll send out a signal to you which will indicate that you will be free to blow it up.”

-COS

The Squad Leader nodded as they walked. “I think we can work that out for you Lieutenant. Any preference on your desired… boom?” The wiry smile crossed the man’s face as his Lieutenant trotted up to the pair. “You boys look like you’re to no good.” The brunette young woman laughed. “So Cap’…” She continued. “… we ready to roll out?” With a shrug, the Captain motioned to the COS. “Up to Starfleet when that is.... you ready?” He asked Hannibal flatly.

Squad Leader

Hannibal smiled at the two. “I’ve got no desired boom,” He replied to the Captain before turning his attention to the both.

“I’m ready to get this party started.”

-COS

The Captain nodded and motioned to the door. Outside waited a ground transport and the trio climbed in. After a rather quiet and focused trip, the craft came to a stop and the Captain opened the door, stepping. “This is as far as we can go. We can monitor comms and relay to your ship, but we can’t enter. You report on you’re way out and we’ll blow it. Sound good?”

Hannibal nodded in acknowledgment.

Squad Leader

Orin climbed out with a bag over his shoulder.

“I managed to make six smart proximity detanator plasma bombs. A little bit more kick than a grenade.” he said.

  • Orin, Engineering

Hannibal took the bag. “Thank you Commander.” he turned to the whole group. “Thanks for the help, see you on the other side.” He slung the bag over his shoulder nodded then turned and headed off into the trees towards the compound.
