Ellie sat in the middle of Main Engineering and looked around. She wasn’t sure what was next, but they had some repairs to make. She wheeled over to one of the consoles and began looking at the damage reports that would need to be taken care of.

Orin stepped into Engineering. Pausing in the doorway, he took a breath and made sure his uniform was neat. This was his first time in Engineering as Chief. He wasn’t sure he was ready to be in charge but wasn’t that normal for all command staff on their first command assignment?

‘Here we go.’ he thought as he stepped through the door.

Looking around, everything seemed to be in order. There were the small adjustments that needed to be made but that was a constant on a ship. Small things never went away, they just changed places. Otherwise, engineering felt content. As for the crew of the engineering department, well he’d just have to see.

Appearing that no-one was going to volunteer an update Orin called out.

“Someone give me a status report.”

Ellie looked up “Yes Chief. We have repair teams at the shield emitters and secondary life support systems to ensure that all the damage has been corrected.” She said as she rolled over to the new Chief Engineer “We also have several teams at the nacelles working on repairing damage there. I am heading to the secondary computer core and work on repairs there.” She said “We have weapons and some warp engines.” Ellie added “We have teams finishing up on the engines.”

Engineering was aware of the engines kicking in as the Dresden was responding to the distress signal. From the sensor information which engineering had access to, they could see that they were heading to a potential firefight. The shields were now at about 81% and the speed was really pushing the less than pristine nacelles.

Ellie sighed “Let me get the shields up to 100%. We need to get the nacelles repaired quickly as well.” She said looking at the CE “What do you want the teams to do?” She asked glad that she no longer needed to make the decisions.

Orin didn’t hesitate.

“Prioritize structural integrity, shields, and weapons. If there’s anyone left to spare after that, put them on propulsion.” he said walking over to the main engineering station and bringing up the ship system displays, “I can feel her discomfort and we’ll get it sorted as quickly as possible.

Ellie nodded “We’ll get her straightened out.” She said as she headed to the shields and got to work.

The engineer managed to bring up the shields back to 100%, but at a cost: the replenishing rate for shields went down by 8%. The ship computers had tried to compensate for the condition of the nacelles by diverting power to the nacelles thus reducing the shield replenishing rate. It was then that the engineer also noticed that the phaser banks charging rates were also slightly down. The effect of this on the potential firefight with the ships that the Dresden were moving to was not too significant, but the Dresden would have problems if they were to encounter a hostile Klingon D7 class ship.
