Harris strode into the Briefing Room and walked to the head of the table, pausing to allow for the assembly of his staff.

Harris, CO

Amelia walked in behind Harris and moved directly to the replicator from where she took a steaming cup of Lady Grey tea with a dash of milk. Her stance seemed to ignore the ship’s CO while her eyes scanned the contents of the PaDD. She finally sat down at her designated seat to Harris’s right.

Shortly after Amelia, Molly walked in in a hurried pace. Wright had just now finally gotten to the Bridge, set back by an irrational fear that, if she walked in the Bridge at the same time as Cal, the crew would suspect that they were physically involved. Not that they didn’t know it, but it put Molly’s mind at ease if she could make it not blatantly obvious. The evident downside was that she had arrived late. When the red alert klaxon had sounded she had rushed her step, only to get to the Bridge and see the Command staff gone.

Putting a few stray hairs back in place and readjusting the hairpins in her head, Molly sat down on an empty chair with questions flooding her mind. The citrus scent of Manning’s tea filled her nostrils and she wished she had had the time for her morning coffee, but, as the other senior members of the staff arrived, Wright didn’t want to get up and set the meeting back. She had already been too late for her standards.

Capt. Wright, CIO

It wasn’t long before Orin showed up. He stepped in, metallic copper hair neat, his titanium eyes bright, and his feet bare. He took in the briefing room and, after a friendly wave an nod to those present, randomly chose an empty chair to sit in. This was his first time in the briefing room on a ship. It was quite a bit smaller than the one on the station he’d been stationed on since his graduation from the academy.

  • LtCdr Orin, CE

Elaine walked briskly in several minutes following Orin, alone. She’d all but rushed from Sickbay when the comm call for all senior staff had come through during her shift. Like Orin, this would be her first time in a senior staff meeting and she’d been determined not to be late. Every now and again, her greeness played on her mind and evidently this was one of those moments. Not that her face showed any of that as she took her place, she kept her head high and shoulders firm as she gave everyone already there a nod, realising that out of the other senior officers, while their faces were familiar, the only two she could comfortably recognise was the CO and XO.

Harris looked to the assembled officers and, softly clearing his throat, began in earnest. “OK people, here’s what we have so far.” The Marine tapped the panel in front of him and brought the tactical map of the party they were approaching on the former War Room’s holographic display located in the conference room’s table. For some in the room, it might very well be the first time they saw a warship’s full tactical display and sensor capabilities. To say the read out was impressive was… an understatement. The holo-display clearly showed the energy and shield levels of both the Ardanan merchant ship, a privately registered vessel, and the ships of the Efrosians Task Group, all showing registry as to the nearby Efrosian colony.

Amelia was one of the people that had never seen such a display onboard of a starship. For a moment she marveled at the engineering behind what she was seeing but she quickly moved on to listen attentively to what Harris had to say.

“As Lieutenant Ashur pointed out, I too believe this might very well be a trade dispute that we’re getting ready to be right in the middle of.” Harris never looked up as he continued to work the console in front of him so the Command Staff could get a better view of what’s in his head. “I literally don’t care who pissed who off…” Harris had the image pull back to the territorial maps showing the position of both vessels in regards to their own territory. “… as you can clearly see, neither party is near their own territory and the Efrosians are in direct violation of the current Collective Defense Mandate of the Federation Treaties and Alliances Act, as enacted March 12th, 2391.”

Well, at least he knows what he was talking about… Manning was impressed. It was the first time she was seeing the Marine in an more combat oriented situation, and even thought they didn’t see eye to eye in a lot of subjects, she couldn’t say he wasn’t competent.

Harris rolled on. “For those of you not familiar, actively attacking a fellow Federation Member Race unprovoked pits said violator at direct odds with Starfleet, as one of our primary mandates is internal self-defense and peacekeeping. In a nutshell… what da’ hell good is an Alliance if you can still legally shot at each other? Now…” The Marine paused and looked up at the Command Staff. “.... the Ardanan in question has some rather powerful friends throughout the Federation and in various shipyards. Those of you that know me, know I really don’t give a rats ass who someone knows but in this case, I think we should probably move to defend the Ardanan… for many reasons. First and foremost for the Efrosians violation of the FTAA and that is where I believe the focus of this… intervention… should lay. Thoughts?” He looked first to his Executive Officer.

Harris, CO

“Do we know who’s sending the distress signal, Sir?” Amelia spoke. “Also, I understand that the Ardanan ship seems to be damaged, which points to the Efrosian vessels as the culprits, but are we absolutely sure that is the case? We might not want to take sides before we know the whole story…”

“Unfortunately Commander…” Harris began. “… I doubt we will have the luxury of such knowledge before we arrive. I think we will have to play it by ear in the way that best ensures us not also getting our collective asses kicked.” He smiled as he continued. “While the path we’re approaching on does put us in the line of fire, such approach by a warship usually… even to stupid smugglers… means a bigger dog has showed up and it would behoove them not to get sideways with said big dog.”

Even though the Efrosian ships outnumbered the Ardanan and everything seemed to point at them as the attackers, Amelia couldn’t help but feeling an unconscious bias against the latter. Maybe it was her own personal history with people with friends in high places, but she didn’t exactly shake that feeling off.

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

Hannibal piped in. “Is there any history of the Ardanan’s attacking a superior force, or attacking while being outnumbered? I doubt technologies are that different that a lone ship would be confidant enough to take on four.” He suggested looking to the display.

“Nor do I Chief, nor do I.” Harris replied to Hannibal in confident air. “Even in the Marines, we do our damnedest to… avoid… such nonsense.” The slight chuckle would not be missed by anyone in the room and it would appear the Marine was steady and in good spirits. “By what we are seeing, the Ardanan’s are definitely the unlucky ones today.”

OCC: for when we are ready.

=^=COB to Colonel Harries, we are approaching the battle. They are no longer discharging weapons, but the the Efronsians have surrounded the Andanans.=^=

-HA/COB

=A=Harris here… maintain course and I’ll be on the Bridge in a moment. CO Out.=A= Harris responded quickly, having been monitoring the approach on the Holo-Display with the rest of the Senior Staff.

Harris looked to his young Executive Officer and allowed a soft smile. “Looks like you have your answer, Exec… advice?” The Marine coolly and calmly asked for the input of the Brit.

Harris, CO

“I would suggest hearing what both parties have to say, now that everyone seemed to have calmed down. Let them tell their sides of the story.” Amelia said. Her English accent as posh as ever. “Just one word of advice, Colonel. The Ardanian has friends in high places. Take what they say with a pinch of salt.” Even though Harris liked to mock Manning in different circumstances, he would know the circles in which she had grown up. It was likely that that was what had prompted her to say what she had.
