The turbo lift seemed to move at a slower than normal pace as Doctor Levi Gordon rode to his destination. Somewhere on deck 3 was his new department head and the beginning of a whole new chapter to his young life. He was a hard worker, always had been, and prided himself on his achievements. Lately, however, he had been preoccupied. Preoccupied with a certain first year cadet he had had to leave behind. Cadet Harley had blown into his life as quickly and as unexpectedly as an Oklahoma thunderstorm, and had carried him off before he could say, “It’s a twister! It’s a twister!” When the dust settled, the then Cadet Gordon, had nearly failed his final year. It was the one and only time in his life he had allowed himself to be controlled by his emotions, and he had nearly paid dearly.

That nonsense was now behind him. He would never admit how difficult it had been to say goodbye. He would not acknowledge how painful it had been to see his lover’s heart break in two right in front of him. But the image of a beautiful tear streaked face as he turned to walk away would silently haunt him for some time to come.

Finally, the doors swooshed open, and clearing his mind he quickly trotted to the door behind which lay the future he had sacrificed so much for.

Activating the door chime, he stood silently and waited for the journey to begin.

While Gordon waited in silence, he’d be able to hear the sound of muffled voices inside the CMO’s office. The voices fell silent as the chime resounded in the office and then the door barked?

“Enter,” one of the two voices called, and the doors to the CMO’s office slide open revealing the occupants. The taller was a greying older man, probably in his late 50’s while the other occupant was a shorter female who barely looked older than 20. Alongside the two humanoids that came running through the doors to greet Gordon was a black and white fluffy canine that reached no higher than Gordon’s shin. The dog bound over, wiggling his tail enthusiastically as he sniffed at Gordon.
“Enj!” The woman’s voice came out low, warning like. The dog looked back at her and cocked his head, his eyes glinting mischeviously. He waited until the woman made a move towards him than trotted into Sickbay, stopping a few meters away to see if she was following. Then he’d move a little further as the woman followed him out into sickbay.

As the doors opened revealing the interior of the office, Ensign Gordon was fully prepared to snap to attention, just as he was taught in the academy, but before he could do so, a menacing creature bounded toward him. Gordon instinctively stiffened, and glanced side to side, searching for the nearest way out. As the beast was about to attack, a woman called out. It appeared to obey her commands, at least partially and pounded off into sickbay. A dog. A DOG? In sickbay? There had to be some protocol banning canine attack animals in a supposedly sanitary area of the ship. Perhaps, his new department head didn’t abide by the rules. Maybe she was a rebel. Or maybe she was just a woman who loved her dog. Gordon decided he couldn’t take the chance. If she could smuggle a ferocious beast like that, what else must she be hiding?

As the creature scurried off, Gordon’s flight instinct released him somewhat. He tried to relax, but as the woman walked by without acknowledging him, he had no choice but to follow behind. He took a few steps and then his feet would carry him no further. “If you’re busy,” began the somewhat panicked and clearly annoyed ensign, “I can come back later. It’s just that I was told to report for duty to a,” he looked down at his PaDD, “Lieutenant Janvier. Are you she?” he asked. While he spoke to the woman, his eyes never left the fluffy ball of terror. Why oh why had he not worn his starfleet issued phaser?
