As soon as the last of her items was unpacked and tidly put away. Elaine Janvier flopped down on her new bed and stared in thought at the ceiling. “A new position and a new ship,” she muttered quietly to herself, “Cheif Medical Officer…” she trailed off, the words still new and unfamiliar to her. Thanks to her resiliant efforts aboard her last posting, Star-fleet had offered her a promotion and a new role aboard the Dresden. It seemed like a dream come true, and even now, as she lay in her new room, it still seemed so surreal to her. “What do you think Enj?” She asked, addressing her dog and near constant companion, who paused his excited exploration of this new enviroment at the mention of his name, but dropped it again, when he saw there was no treat involved. “Do you reckon we can pull it off?”

The room of course remained silent, as Enj continued his exploration, and she continued to stare pensivly at the ceiling. As time passed, her eyes began to drift shut of their own accord. It had been a long trip she’d had to take to intersect with the Dresden and after spending a fair portion of the morning unpacking her body was natrually taking the time to rest. Almost as if sensing her drifting off, Enj whined and jumped up onto the bed and landing half on her. Being a small dog, he wasn’t heavy at all and normally his being on her wouldn’t bother her, but as she was in the drifting state between conscioussness and sleep, and becuase she hadn’t been expecting him to she gasped, as she became fully awake and bolted upright. As she moved, Enj lost his precarious position half on her chest, and she ended up half scooping him in her arms, in order to stop him from fully falling off of the bed. “Don’t do that!” she exclaimed her heart pounding “You should know by now that you can’t come onto the bed without being first invited. It’s rude.” Enj in typical dog response, gave his tail a small wag and tilted his head up to lick her chin.

Elaine laughed at her dogs antics, the pounding in her chest, subsiding although it was still noticably there. “You’re right though, there are still things that need to be done before I can rest yet.” She spoke as she gently put the dog down on the floor and began to change out of her civilian clothes into her Uniform, “How does a trip around the ship sound to you? Lets see if we can’t find the CO or XO to report to.”

Although Elaine had said that she was going to seek out either the CO or XO, she didn’t report in straight away. Instead she opted to take the long way around the ship, giving her and Enj the chance to get to know the ship in their process. In a very unhurried manner the two of them wandered around the ship until they eventually found the bridge, and by extention the ready room. Almost without hesitation, she rang the buzzer on the ready room but as she stepped back and let the computer announce her arrival she stepped slightly closer to Enj as she waited for a response.

Without a word, the door before her opened to a small waiting room with a young female Marine at a desk. “You here to see the Ol’man?” The woman’s thick New Jersey ascent rolled from her. With a nod over her head to the other door, the young woman motioned the new CMO to the office door leading from the room. Tapping a comm box, the Marine said flatly. =A= Got a guest Boss… she’s out here.=A=

An oddity in the Fleet, a Marine currently in command of the Capital Ship, the USS Dresden’s Commanding Officer Colonel Calvin Harris glanced up from the stack of PaDDs he had been reviewing and sighed reservedly. “It’s open” Harris barked as he disengaged the lock on the door and it hissed open revealing a trophy-filled office with walls covered in plaques from a lifetime spent in a cockpit. Glancing toward the young CMO, Harris huffed softly “Don’t just stand there Lieutenant, come in.”

Harris, CO

“Yes sir,” Elaine said, briskly walking into the office door, with Enj trotting at her heels. She allowed her eyes to breifly travel around the room and take in the trophies feeling mildly impressed at the sheer number that of awards her new Captain had accomplished already. Having taken in her surroundings her eyes quickly snapped back to the CO and she stood to attention. Enj, sat primly at her feet. “Lieutenant Janvier reporting for duty, sir.”

Harris couldn’t help but smile. He remembered being young and green and energetic. Though some days he wondered where the hell that kid went, it was days and moments like this that reminded him to slow down and enjoy the status his hard work had bestowed upon him.

“Grab a seat Doc… and welcome to the Dresden.” Harris nodded.

“Thank you sir,” the CMO relaxed a little, and moved over to the nearest chair. Enj, sensing the change in her mood, flopped on the floor putting his head on his paws. He kept one wary eye, his black one, on Elaine.

As the CMO settled into her chair, the Marine asked the questions of all questions. “So, Doctor, tell me a little bit about yourself. What brought you here? What experience do you have? What do you bring to MY team? And, most importantly, what do you hope to accomplish in your time on the Dres’?”

Harris, CO

Elaine blinked at the torrent of questions. “I understand I’m fresh sir, and I’ve only been out of the Academy for a few years but I’m qualified for my role as CMO. I wouldn’t have been promoted if Starfleet didn’t think that I was capable.”

Harris smiled softly. “I get that, Lieutenant, I do. But tell me a bit about your specializations, if you have any.” The Marine’s tone was friendly as he made a hand gesture for her to continue.

“As a doctor I’m most proficient in trauma treatment. Following my graduation from the Academy I served aboard a triage ship until the end of their mission and when they offered me the promotion, they also offered me a role here.” She kept to herself the part of her that believed that she’d been offered the CMO role, not because of her capability in managing a department, but rather (at least in part), because of the COs status as both a Marine and a Star-fleet Captain. She guessed that someone in Star-fleet was concered that a military man running the vessel would be more likely to get said vessel into military situations. She had excelled in that kind of an enviroment, and so the CMO postion was offered to her, she’d simply been promoted at the right time. This thought, however, was merely a theory and not something that she was willing to speak aloud unless she knew it to be a fact. So instead she said, “The Dresden is a Maverick class combat vessel, sir. With my experience, short as it may be, I guess Star-Fleet believed I would make a compatible CMO,”

“That it is, Ms. Janvier.” Harris nodded before continuing. “Which is way I’m glad the power that be saw fit to send me a CMO with the right kind of background. It’s… comforting, ya know.” His smile grew slightly wider.

She smiled, “As for myself, I just want to help people, sir. I accepted this role because I think this is the best way for me to be able to achieve that. Working aboard a starship such as the Dresden I not only get to explore the galaxy, but I get to heal people in the process. And I’ve got the added benefit of having Enj” at this she guestured to the small fluffy dog lying on the floor, who at the mention of his name popped his head up and wagged his tail, “He doesn’t look like much but you’d be surprised at how much help he can be. He’s been with me ever since I graduated, and he’s earned his keep. Sometimes when a patient is having a particularly bad run, I’ve brought him in and he’s been able to perform miracles that hyposprays and medicine can not,” She gazed down at the dog, who’s head had flopped back into his paws, there was a touch of fondness on her face and in her voice as she spoke of him, “It’s amazing what a little bit of simple love can do,”

“I’m a dog person myself, Lieutenant…” Harris beamed at the fluffy companion. “… so if Enj his keep and doesn’t make a mess of my ship, I figure if Jon Archer can have a dog… so can you!”

“Does that sufficiantly answer all of your quesions, sir?” She asked, her gaze flicking back to the Captain, and her voice returning to it’s professional sound that she had adopted when she’d first started talking to the Captain.

“That’s just fine for me Chief. Now…” He continued. “What questions do you have of me, Lieutenant?”

Harris, CO

Elaine shifted in her seat, “I only arrived on board a few short hours ago, and I haven’t had the chance to read over any of the previous CMO’s files yet, but is there anything I ought to focus my attentions on first? Or anything about the ship and the crew that I ought to know medically or not?”

Harris sighed slightly. He was impressed. Usually Junior DH’s asked stupid questions that had nothing to do with their jobs. Ms. Janvier, on the other hand, got straight to the point. “Well… Ms. Janvier, there are a few. For starters, make damn sure the Counseling Staff meet with Captain Wright at least once a month. They will know why, just make sure it’s done. Secondly, JG Kleinhoffer has… special… medical concerns you should read up on. Lastly, as you pointed out earlier, this is… Ms. Janvier… a warship. It is ran as such and is in hazardous situations on an annoyingly regular basis. I want you to make damn sure your people are brought up to your level of knowledge and care on the trauma side of medicine.”

Elaine nodded solomnly along to what Harris was saying, it was obvious on her face she was taking a mental note of each name as they were mentioned and storing them for later. Undoubtedly they would be the first files she examined when she got back to her office later.

Harris cracked an unmistakable smirk. “I do my best to keep you all out of the storm, but sometimes… the storm finds us. Understood?” The warm smile on the man’s face was in polar opposite to the intimidating Marine uniform he wore.

Harris, CO

“Understood sir,” Elaine was pleased to hear Harris affirm to her that he wasn’t one of those thrill seeker Captains that looked out for the fight more than they looked out for their crew. “And you can be assured that the medical team will be prepared for the next… storm to hit,”

The smile Harris now gave was the warmest the Marine had given so far in their meeting and with a knowing nod, he continued. “Good to hear Lieutenant. Unless you have any other questions, I will let you get along with your duties.”

Harris, CO

“None sir,” Elaine stood up as she did, Enj stuck his head up, watching to see what she would do. “Looking forward to serving with you, sir,” and with those words, Elaine departed, with Enj trotting at her heels. As they left the pair worked almost perfectly in sync with each others footsteps with the ease of a team who’d clearly been together for a while.
