NE Lucia was already performing when Lieutenant (j.g) Janvier entered the Crew lounge out of breath with Enj trotting faithfully at her side. Looking at the small black and white dog, you wouldn’t think that he’d been the cause of Elaine’s tardiness, nor her flushed cheeks. No. As the dog trotted into the Crew Lounge he looked every inch the perfect angel. You’d hardly believe that he’d made Elaine chase him down three coridors, when he’d suddenly decided that he wanted to go wherever he wanted stopping every few meters or so to make sure Elaine was following before taking off running again. The game had continued until an NE had caught Enj for Elaine and handed the dog back to his owner. Needless to say, entering the lounge Elaine wasn’t in the best of moods, and was really looking forward to sitting down and having a drink.

Lt. (j.g) Janvier & Enj
CMO

Amelia watched NE Lucia’s performance with a slight smile on her lips, clearly enthralled by it. She had always been amazed by the variety of skills existing among the crew members of a ship, and today she had not been disappointed.

Sitting alone at a table by one of the large viewports, Manning nursed what seemed to be a glass of whisky. Her shift had ended fifteen minutes ago, a personal record when it came to elapsed time between the ending of her shift and the placement of a drink in her hand, but today of all days it seemed that dealing with the Dresden’s Marine Commander had taken too much of a toll on her.

It wasn’t the young CMO’s entrance that finally took Amelia’s eyes from the stage, but rather the canine crew member that had just walked in with her. With a wide smile on her lips, Manning’s eyes glanced at the dog’s human. Acknowledging Janvier with a cheerful nod, she waved at the young woman. Amelia had not yet met the ship’s new Chief Medical Officer and she was curious to meet the doctor in a less formal setting.

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

Upon her first glazed gaze across the room, Elaine hadn’t noticed Lieutenant Manning. Mostly because the majority of her attention was split between NE Lucia and keeping an eye on Enj. Another reason she missed the XO was because, even though she had glanced across the room, she didn’t yet know all that many people on the ship and so hadn’t really been seeking anyone. It was perhaps why she was mildly surprised when she noticed the XO waving in her direction, especially after she realised it was her that was being waved at. Reflexivly she flashed Manning a polite smile, and raised her hand to wave but had to lower it as Enj got bored and began to trot away and she lunged after him scooping him up before he could wander too far.

Rather than having to worry about watching the dog, Janvier kept Enj tucked under her arm as she ordered a scotch for herself and a bowl of water for Enj. It wasn’t until the bartender lay their drinks on the bar that Elaine placed Enj back on the floor. With both their drinks in her hand, Elaine made her way over to Manning’s table, with Enj on her heels.

“Mind some company?” Elaine asked as she paused at the XO’s table, “I’m new onboard and I’m afraid the only other person I know is onstage,”.

Lt. (j.g) Janvier & Enj
CMO

“Not at all!” Amelia said cheerfully. “I recognized you from the picture on your file, doctor. Welcome aboard!” Manning’s words carried a thick posh British accent. “I don’t think we have been formally introduced… Amelia Manning.” She said as she held out her hand for the young doctor to shake. “Ship’s XO.”

“I wondered how you seemed to know me,” Elaine chuckled softly, “Elaine Janvier, and my parter in crime is Enj. A pleasure to make your aquaintance,” Elaines hand was light in the XO’s as they shook hands.

“So, did your friend’s performance bring you here? I see your company is happy to be out and about.” Amelia gestured towards Enj with a smile. “It’s refreshing to see more than just people in the corridors.”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

“Yes, she invited me to watch her perform tonight. Enj and I haven’t really had much of a chance to explore the ship so I figured it would be good for him.” She flicked a fond smile at the fluffy mammal sitting at her feet. “He’s definitly having a good time. We took a bit of a detour on the way here cause he thought he’d show himself around. He’s normally better behaved but I think the excitement has got to him a little.”

Amelia smiled in understanding as she took a sip from her glass, remembering how stubborn Moose could be. “My husband’s parents have an English Mastiff. There is no way of stopping him if he wants to go somewhere.”

She leaned over and scooped Enj back up, sitting down in one of the chairs and settling him into her lap. “How about yourself?” she questioned, “Are you also aquainted with NE Lucia?”

Lt. (j.g) Janvier & Enj the dog
CMO

“No.” Amelia said “Let’s say I am acquainted with the lounge.” She smiled. Growing up, Manning had always enjoyed a drink at the local pub in the company of friends. Eventually, she had found the same joy in starship lounges, but ever since she had met Harris, she was starting to think that she and the bartender were getting a little bit too familiar. “But I always enjoy watching the different things a ship’s crew has to offer. The amount of talent is often unexpected.”

“You can say that again,” Elaine chuckled, as a Security officer on her past ship came to mind. He was a hulk of a man and intimidating to say the least, but also the best magician she’d ever seen.

“So how do you know NE Lucia?” Amelia took another sip. “Is she a medical officer, or did you know each other before?” Manning didn’t mean to pry. She was just genuinely curious.

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

“She’s one of my JO’s” Elaine explained, swirling her drink around but not drinking, “To be honest I don’t know her all that well, but she’s friendly enough. One of those social butterflies you know?” She lifted her drink and finally took her first sip, then grimnced at the flavour, scotch had never been her favourite. “I think she’s hoping that if I’d came I’d make friends. Apparently using Sickbay as a people meeting service isn’t a good enough answer for her. She’s very frank.” She took another sip this one going down much easier and shrugged, “I don’t really care either way. Enj is all I need by way of friends.”

Amelia chuckled slightly before taking another sip of her whisky. “One of my best friends was a doctor. The Chief Medical Officer on board one of my previous posts. My understanding was that it can get pretty lonely down in Sickbay. Definitely not the best people meeting service on the ship…” She smiled. “Vodka was his people meeting tool, I guess… Maybe you should find one outside sickbay as well .” Manning suggested. She was a bit of a social butterfly herself, but she understood exactly what Janvier had meant. Before suggesting anything else, Amelia asked curiously. “How long has Enj been with you?”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

Elaine looked down at the dog on her lap, and ruffled his head fondly. Enj’s tale wagged, but otherwise he didn’t react. “A little over 4 years,” Elaine said, “My cousin gave him to me as a gift in my graduating year. It’d been… a rough year. She thought I could use his company.” Elaine smiled, but it was tight, her eyes brimmed with sadness. It’d been a few years since she’d graduated, but the pain from that year lingured in the corners of her mind. Fraiser leaving, the attack in her room… she shook the memories away. They weren’t things she wanted to think about. Instead she focused on happier memeories from that year. “He saw out the rest of that year with me. One of my professors even gave him a Starfleet badge of his own when I graduated,” Elaine’s hand moved to his collar and brushed away his fur there so Amelia could see the clear sign of the Starfleet Insigna attached to it. Underneath was a dog tag with the medical insigna and Enj’s name etched neatly into it. “My previous CMO gave me the dog tag, it has my details on the back of it, since Enj likes to wander so much.”

CMO

A wide smile lit Amelia’s face when she saw the insignia on Enj’s collar. It was definitely a heartwarming touch. She looked back at Janvier. “That was thoughtful! Although, I am quite sure that Enj is the only dog around the Dresden… unfortunately. So if he wonders off you’ll probably have a bunch of people who wouldn’t mind keeping an eye on him.” She took another sip of her whisky, falling pensive for a moment. “We should change that.” Manning said finally. “There should be more pets around starships. Although I’m not sure how easy it would be to manage them if everyone had one.”

Elaine nodded in agreement. She couldn’t’ve agreed more with Manning, it’d only been four years and she’d benifitted so much from having Enj around that she seriously couldn’t imagine a life without him. She gave his head another ruffle, savouring the feel of his fur sliding through her fingers

“We tend to forget that animals are good company in hard times.” Amelia continued. “And I’m sure you know that better than I know… after all, you are a trained Medical professional.” She smiled warmly. “Before the Dresden I was an Engineer. The Jefferies tubes were my favorite place to be. Still have a hard time realizing I am no longer one. I’m afraid the only thing I can fix are machines… not people.”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

“Still honourable in it’s own right Commander, without Engineers ensuring the machines were functional, I’d be over run with patients to fix due to some idiot or another trying to fix what they’re unfamiliar with.” Elaine’s hand moved to scratch Enj’s ears, taking delight in the way he leaned into her touch as she found the spot he always liked. “But if you ask me, out of the three of us Enj does the most honourable work of all. You and I, we fix the material, Enj fixes souls. I’ve seen people come back from the brick of death after spending time with him.” She took a sip of her own scotch and appeared lost in thought as a memory surfaced, “My previous posting was a triage ship, we supplied medical aid to federation members in conflict or post-conflict. While we were on route to a mission, our Captain picked up a distress call from one of those trading ships, they’d been attacked by pirates and were in pretty bad condition. I remember one of the survivors was only a boy of about 10 years, who’d lost the rest of his famly in the attack, he’d been crushed by part of the bulkhead, given the treatement we gave him, and his youth, he ought to have recovered nicely, but he wouldn’t get better.”

His face flashed in her mind, she could still remember it with perfect clarity, and a surge of pity for the child hit her almost as hard as it had then. She remembered watching the child slowly fade before her, the frusteration that nothing she did was working even when it should. The cold words that the CMO uttered about how she couldn’t help those with no hope. He’d been right. She couldn’t. “… my CMO said he’d given up and there wasn’t much we could do than keep him comfortable until he got his head out of the gutter.” She quoted with a shake of her head. “Then I remembered Enj helped me, so I brought him into Sickbay with me. It was the first time Ra’laan - the boy - so much as twitched. With my CMO’s permission I started bringing him in regularly and Ra’laan began to improve. It was almost a miracle. Enj healed what I could not.” her face flushed with pride. Enj, almost as if sensing it, sat up twisting his head around and gave her hand a wee lick. “We make a good team.”
