The turbo lift seemed to move at a slower than normal pace as Doctor Levi Gordon rode to his destination. Somewhere on deck 3 was his new department head and the beginning of a whole new chapter to his young life. He was a hard worker, always had been, and prided himself on his achievements. Lately, however, he had been preoccupied. Preoccupied with a certain first year cadet he had had to leave behind. Cadet Harley had blown into his life as quickly and as unexpectedly as an Oklahoma thunderstorm, and had carried him off before he could say, “It’s a twister! It’s a twister!” When the dust settled, the then Cadet Gordon, had nearly failed his final year. It was the one and only time in his life he had allowed himself to be controlled by his emotions, and he had nearly paid dearly.

That nonsense was now behind him. He would never admit how difficult it had been to say goodbye. He would not acknowledge how painful it had been to see his lover’s heart break in two right in front of him. But the image of a beautiful tear streaked face as he turned to walk away would silently haunt him for some time to come.

Finally, the doors swooshed open, and clearing his mind he quickly trotted to the door behind which lay the future he had sacrificed so much for.

Activating the door chime, he stood silently and waited for the journey to begin.

While Gordon waited in silence, he’d be able to hear the sound of muffled voices inside the CMO’s office. The voices fell silent as the chime resounded in the office and then the door barked?

“Enter,” one of the two voices called, and the doors to the CMO’s office slide open revealing the occupants. The taller was a greying older man, probably in his late 50’s while the other occupant was a shorter female who barely looked older than 20. Alongside the two humanoids that came running through the doors to greet Gordon was a black and white fluffy canine that reached no higher than Gordon’s shin. The dog bound over, wiggling his tail enthusiastically as he sniffed at Gordon.
“Enj!” The woman’s voice came out low, warning like. The dog looked back at her and cocked his head, his eyes glinting mischeviously. He waited until the woman made a move towards him than trotted into Sickbay, stopping a few meters away to see if she was following. Then he’d move a little further as the woman followed him out into sickbay.

As the doors opened revealing the interior of the office, Ensign Gordon was fully prepared to snap to attention, just as he was taught in the academy, but before he could do so, a menacing creature bounded toward him. Gordon instinctively stiffened, and glanced side to side, searching for the nearest way out. As the beast was about to attack, a woman called out. It appeared to obey her commands, at least partially and pounded off into sickbay. A dog. A DOG? In sickbay? There had to be some protocol banning canine attack animals in a supposedly sanitary area of the ship. Perhaps, his new department head didn’t abide by the rules. Maybe she was a rebel. Or maybe she was just a woman who loved her dog. Gordon decided he couldn’t take the chance. If she could smuggle a ferocious beast like that, what else must she be hiding?

As the creature scurried off, Gordon’s flight instinct released him somewhat. He tried to relax, but as the woman walked by without acknowledging him, he had no choice but to follow behind. He took a few steps and then his feet would carry him no further. “If you’re busy,” began the somewhat panicked and clearly annoyed ensign, “I can come back later. It’s just that I was told to report for duty to a,” he looked down at his PaDD, “Lieutenant Janvier. Are you she?” he asked. While he spoke to the woman, his eyes never left the fluffy ball of terror. Why oh why had he not worn his starfleet issued phaser?

OOC: I loved that post, it made me laugh hearing you call Enj a ‘menacing creature’.

IC:

The woman paused in her chase around Sickbay as she realised the Ensign was addressing her. “I’m Lieutenant Janvier,” She straightened herself up, and the curious watchers in Sickbay that hadn’t been ignoring the bizzare chase quickly averted their eyes before she noticed. “I’m not busy at all,” all her attention was fully focused on Gordon now, and seeing it Enj had stopped running, and was watching them. “Come with me,” she turned and marched brisquely towards the office. As soon as she started walking away, Enj trotted over and walked at her heels.

When they got into the office, Enj jumped up in the CMO’s chair, and curled into a small ball. The Lieutenant looked at him and rolled her eyes. Reaching over her desk she picked up a PADD and started tapping the screen, “Don’t mind Enj,” she said as her fingers worked, “He’s just a little excited. I brought him in for one of my patients, but she’s sleeping now, and he’s getting a little restless. Ah!” she exclaimed having found what she was looking for, she tapped a few more buttons, than placed the PADD on the table. “Sorry about that, Enj and I are still settling in, and I’m trying to catch up on all the work the previous CMO left behind. What can I do for you Ensign?”

Having been distracted by his narrowly avoiding death by mauling, Ensign Gordon had completely forgotten. He quickly came to attention. “Ensign Levi Gordon, MD. Reporting for duty, Sir.” He stood stiffly like he was taught, but he kept one eye on the beast, just in case. “Is he a doctor too?” he asked, indicating the wild animal currently resting in his new boss’s chair.

Elaine blinked at the formality, of course with her new role as CMO it was something she would have to get used to, but she still found it odd. Particularly as she was younger than the majority of her staff. “At ease Ensign, and welcome aboard,” she smiled warmly, “Don’t worry about Enj, he’s qualified enough. He helps cheer the patients up when they need it, or entertain children if they come in. It’s a little unsual but you’ll get used to it with time I’m sure.”

Don’t count on it, is what the young ensign wanted to say but instead he replied, “I am sure I will, Sir.” Ensign Gordon stood at ease but did not sit.

She picked Enj up from her seat, and sat back down re-arranging the dog on her lap. “So what brings you here? Why be a Starfleet doctor?” she asked, quoting what her CMO first asked her when she was an Ensign. Realising as she phrased the question why he had asked the same thing from her.

“Well, let’s see,” he began, trying not to sound too full of himself, which, Cadet Harley liked to remind him, he did on occasion. He smiled a bit, “it was never really a matter of deciding. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, no,” he stopped and glanced down slightly, “I always wanted to be a great doctor.” He hoped he said that without sounding to arrogant. “Starfleet has the best medical school, the best technology, and has made the most medical breakthroughs of any one in this quadrant of the galaxy. My specialty is in Xenobiology and physiology. The only place to practice that, is Starfleet.”

Elaine nodded thoughtfully. It was evident that Ensign before her was ambitions, his desire to be the best reminded her of Fraiser. Like Cadet Gordon, Fraiser wanted to be the best, it was why he picked Starfleet, and how she’d ended joining as well. Fraiser was driven to best to Enj lifted his head and licked her hand, as if he’d sensed that she’d been thinking about Fraiser, or more likely because her grip on him had tightened as it normally did, when her brain started going there. The wet touch of his tongue on her skin brought her mind back to the Ensign in front of her. “How broad are your specialites?” she questioned looking at the dog on her lap thoughtfully, “Are they limited to humanoids or a vast array of species?”

OOC: Sorry sorry so sorry. I will be catching up.

IC:”Mostly humanoids, but I’m expanding. I have a particular interest in studying Horta’s. There was some very interesting work done on the USS Apollo years. They have established that the Horta is a sentient species and may have human equivalent intelligence.” He smiled. He’d never seen a Horta in person, but he longed to. It was something of an obsession.
