Levi chuckled. He had already seen his fair share of plasma burns and that was just on his Cadet cruise. “Well, oddly enough, it was a footnote. I was reading up on non-pedal non-humanoid species and they mentioned the possible level of intelligence in Hortas. The footnote annotated a report by a Cadet Miller. She was an engineer on the Apollo roughly 10 years ago. Apparently the Horta had been rescued during an away mission and took a particular liking to the Cadet. The last of the reports read that Cadet Miller had established some communication with the creature and had even given it a name which it responded to. It was…” he thought hard and long but it just wasn’t coming to him,.. ” I can’t remember but I know that the name meant friend.”

Elaine nodded thoughtfully, “Just because the Horta speak a language different to ours, doesn’t mean that they aren’t intelligent. It is merely a question of how far that intelligence extends. Like Enj here in a way,” she petted the dog on her lap, who started wagging his tale happily. “Him and I aren’t anywhere close to the sames species, but I’d call him my friend. There are times where I reckon he’s even more perceptive than I am.” She grinned, “Although I can’t imagine a Horta wanting to curl up in my lap.”

Feeling like she was beginning to get a little sidetracked, she brought the questions back to the matter at hand, “Is there anything else I should know? Or any questions you want to ask me?”

“Amicus!” he blurted out suddenly and a little more loudly than he had intended. “The Horta had said his name was Amicus,” he breathed a sigh of relief and he was relieved because he knew himself well enough to know that he would never be able to move on or think about anything else until he had thought of it.

“And no, nothing comes to mind as far as questions. I have my duty schedule and my quarters assignment. Maybe a mission briefing? What are we currently working on?” He was hoping for a little excitement, actually, having spent so many years studying.

Elaine leaned over and picked up her PADD tapping on it lightly and bringing up the current projects although she already knew what most of them were, she was just using the PADD for reference. “It’s a bit quiet at the moment,” she said glancing lightly at the screen, “We have one NE recovering from surgery, and another with Arethia flu. NE Lucia has been doing some research on the Thelusian Virus in orer to try and develop an antibody that can resist it. If you wanted to help out with that I’m sure she could use another brain to pick. Or if you have any of your own, run them by me and I’ll see if we can accomodate you.”

“Oh,” the ensign replied, a somewhat disappointed, but he quickly recovered. “I mean, of course Lieutenant. I will do that.” He was prepared to leave when he suddenly asked, “do you think we could get my boarding physical out of the way?”

“Yes of course,” Elaine said, picking Enj up off her lap and setting him on the ground, an audible though muffled groan came from the dog, who was obviously unhappy to be dislodged from his comfortable spot. “If you’ll follow me,” Elaine said, exiting her office and walking into sickbay to grab a tricorder to commence the physical. Enj trotted between the pair, occassionally darting away to greet a familiar NE or sniff an unfamiliar one, and returning when Elaine called him back to her side.

Ensign Gordon maintained a safe distance behind the beast. He stiffened when he saw the creature lunge at another crewman and nearly called, “watch out! He’s attacking!” but was able to refrain. He did realize that most people did not share his irrational sentiments towards canines, not everyone could be as smart as he.

“Would you like me on a biobed Doctor?” he asked, keeping his eyes on the beast.
