Charlie’s pace slowed to a crawl as she approached sickbay. She felt her pulse quicken as the doors slid open in front of her. ‘You’ve got this…’ she whispered under her breath as she stepped into sickbay and approached the CMO’s office. Nervously she pressed the chime and waited to be admitted. She did a quick breath check whilst she was waiting and checked she was presentable, hoping she wasn’t sweating too much. She wasn’t even sure why she was so nervous, she had dreamt her whole life of this moment, of starting her career as a doctor but somehow she felt woeful unprepared.

As she waited, a friendly nurse smiled and said good morning to which Charlie replied with “ho, yo, heya, yes…” followed by a little voice in her head saying, ‘well done genius, way to make a good first impression…’

  • Ensign Bailey (Med)

A muffled sound emitted from the CMO’s office almost as soon as the chime was rung, then a clutter and the doors of the office slid open as a voice of presumably the CMO growled, “Come - Enj we’ve - No - Get here!” Before Charlie could even blink what could only be described as a ball of black and white fluff barreled at her. It stopped just short of her, and stood up on it’s back legs, using her own ones to prop itself up and revealing itself to be some form of Terran dog. It’s tail wiggled furiously, even as a young woman, in about her mid 20s, scooped it up and held it, wiggling, in front of her. “I told you to behave,” she glared at the animal, “We’ll be discussing this later.” She tucked the animal under her arm and then turned to focus her attention on the woman before her.

Charlie was slightly taken aback by the rather unorthodox greeting and took a cautious step back but once she saw Enj’s adorable face she smiled and gave him a quick stroke on the head, leaving out a friendly hand for him to sniff.

Although the CMO was taller than the Ensign, her frame could only be described as petite and made her look smaller than she really was. What was more stricking, however, was how young the Doctor looked, she looked like she was barely out of the Acadamy, despite the pips on her collar that clearly indicated that she was a junior Lieutenant. She had soft green eyes, and a gentle smile, that was calming; contrasting with the zealous excitement of the black and white dog in her arms. As for her office, aside from a messy corner that had clearly become the animals home, and an overturned chair, the office was kept in a tidy. Various old-fashioned medical textbooks were stacked on the desk and on the floor beside the desk. The only personal touch other than the dogs bed and toys were two Starfleet awards, one the Decoration of Valor, and the other the medical Star Cross that hung on the wall behind her.
“My apologies, he gets a little… over excited whenever there’s a new crewman aboard.” She stuck out her free hand “Junior Lieutenant Janvier, I’m presuming by your blue uniform you’re either Ensign Matilda Romani from Science or Ensign Charlie Bailey my new doctor.”

Charlie smiled warmly and shook her head. “Not at all, he’s adorable, and it’s the friendliest welcome I’ve ever had!” she joked as she stroked him again. For a moment she was lost in petting Enj and then remembered why she was there and hastily shook her new boss’ hand. “Sorry, Ensign Charlie Bailey reporting for duty ma’am,” she said as she stood a little more to attention.

Charlie took a moment to take in Lt Janvier, she wasn’t really what she had expected. She had imagined that she would be a little older but she seemed to have a quiet confidence about her. She reminded Charlie a little of her mother, Elena, she too used to have that warm persona about her. Feeling herself start to get emotional as she remembered her mother she quickly snapped her attention back to the room. Let’s try and get through day 1 without a breakdown… she mentally scolded herself and focused her attention back on the CMO.

Elaine smiled, “No problem at all,” there was something akin to pride in her eyes as she glanced at the dog in her arms, “He loves people.” She walked into her office and placed Enj down on his bed. “Take a seat,” she said guesturing to the chair on the other side of the desk, while she seated herself in her own chair. “and don’t worry too much about formalities. I’m younger than most of my staff and it just makes me feel odd,”
