“Still honourable in it’s own right Commander, without Engineers ensuring the machines were functional, I’d be over run with patients to fix due to some idiot or another trying to fix what they’re unfamiliar with.” Elaine’s hand moved to scratch Enj’s ears, taking delight in the way he leaned into her touch as she found the spot he always liked. “But if you ask me, out of the three of us Enj does the most honourable work of all. You and I, we fix the material, Enj fixes souls. I’ve seen people come back from the brick of death after spending time with him.” She took a sip of her own scotch and appeared lost in thought as a memory surfaced, “My previous posting was a triage ship, we supplied medical aid to federation members in conflict or post-conflict. While we were on route to a mission, our Captain picked up a distress call from one of those trading ships, they’d been attacked by pirates and were in pretty bad condition. I remember one of the survivors was only a boy of about 10 years, who’d lost the rest of his famly in the attack, he’d been crushed by part of the bulkhead, given the treatement we gave him, and his youth, he ought to have recovered nicely, but he wouldn’t get better.”

His face flashed in her mind, she could still remember it with perfect clarity, and a surge of pity for the child hit her almost as hard as it had then. She remembered watching the child slowly fade before her, the frusteration that nothing she did was working even when it should. The cold words that the CMO uttered about how she couldn’t help those with no hope. He’d been right. She couldn’t. “… my CMO said he’d given up and there wasn’t much we could do than keep him comfortable until he got his head out of the gutter.” She quoted with a shake of her head. “Then I remembered Enj helped me, so I brought him into Sickbay with me. It was the first time Ra’laan - the boy - so much as twitched. With my CMO’s permission I started bringing him in regularly and Ra’laan began to improve. It was almost a miracle. Enj healed what I could not.” her face flushed with pride. Enj, almost as if sensing it, sat up twisting his head around and gave her hand a wee lick. “We make a good team.”

bumping to keep on boards :) 19-01-2018

Amelia drank Janvier’s every word. Her glass forgotten, the sound of the performance on the stage fading into the background. When she finished, her gaze fell on Enj. She smiled. “Wow. I can’t even imagine…” Manning looked genuinely lost for words. “I’m certainly glad to have you and Enj on board! Hopefully nothing like that happens, but I’m sure Enj will be a valuable member of the medical staff.” The smile on her lips was genuine.

Elaine returned the XO’s smile, and ruffled the Enj’s head, “He will be,” she said confidently

“It must have been tough though.” Amelia took another sip of her drink. “To work on a triage ship… I imagine a ship like the Dresden must be way quieter, no?”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

“Almost definitly, the Dresden is much less intense.” Elaine said, “It’s good, gives me a chance to breath as I settle into my new role.” she chuckled, “I forget that I’m the Chief Doctor now, and NE’s will report to me with info about their latest assignments or patients, and I’m about to send them to the CMO and then I realise that that’s me. Was it like that when you became CE?”

Lt. (j.g.) Janvier
CMO

Amelia chuckled softly. “It’s interesting that you ask, but the truth is, I never made Chief Engineer. By the time that I would be approaching that promotion life took a turn and me and my husband moved to OED V. I worked as the Head of Construction and Operations there for about nine months. So… It was sort of a CE placement, but not really. The work was different than what you would normally do in a starship, and I was also getting used to the fact that now I was stuck on a planet…” Manning’s mind went back at how miserable both she and Peter had been. “I’m actually glad that chapter of our lives is closed.” She smiled. “That’s the one thing I learned about being at OED… when you’re not happy with the way your life is going, change it. I know me and my husband did, and it was really for the best.”

Elaine sipped her drink quietly as Amelia talked.

Manning paused to take another sip or her whisky. “I’m sure you’ll get the grasp of your new placement in no time. Although… I have to say… I feel like I am still trying to get used to being the Executive Officer!” She chuckled once more. “So, what are plans for the future? Eventually having a ship of your own, or staying in the medical field?”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

“I hope so and as for future plans, I don’t really have many,” Elaine shrugged, her ex Fraiser’s words flashing in her mind You think taking a posting on a medical ship will further your career? Guess what Elaine Doctors don’t make Captain, the words had been painful then to the Cadet who had just taken her first step into making something of herself. She’d tried stepping out of Fraisers shadow in the hopes of creating her own, and it had hurt having him continue to cast her in the shade. Now, she realised she didn’t care. While the words sat in the back of her mind, they were no longer hurtful. She no longer cared to be self-focused and aiming for the top like Fraiser, she wanted to focus her attention on others. She’d become a doctor to help, not use others as a means to an end in the way Fraiser did. If Captaincy came it came, but if it didn’t she wouldn’t lose any sleep.

“I’ll probably continue to be a doctor. I can’t really imagine myself in charge of a ship, I don’t have the backbone for it,” she chuckled, taking another sip of her drink “Besides I like what I do. Did you ever imagine you’d make First Officer? You’re pretty much set to have your own ship in a few years once you make it that far aren’t you?” At least that’s what her Fraiser had told her, in one of his many rants.

Lt. (j.g.) Janvier
CMO

“Not really…” Amelia said. A pensive look on her face. “Engineering was always my passion and it will continue to be. But the opportunity presented itself and I thought I’d give it a try. It felt like something I shouldn’t pass on because I didn’t know if it was ever going to come up again. As for the backbone…” Manning took a sip from her now almost empty glass. “… you’ll learn it. I can tell you that even after going through Command College I feel like I have learnt more things on the job than in classes before my assignment. Also, I would think that if you make it to First Officer you’ll eventually have your own ship. Unless you’re really bad at it or don’t want the job… but I’m really not versed in those particular inner workings of Starfleet Command. If you want to know more, you should maybe talk to Captain Wright. According to her file she made Captain at twenty-five!” Amelia played with her glass for a little bit and then added. “Makes me think what I’ve been doing with my life.” She chuckled softly emptying her glass in the process.

Elaine blinked in confusion, forgetting that there were two Captains onboard the ship, “Don’t you mean…” she trailed off, she’d been about to say Captain Harris but that didn’t make any sense. Her mind searching for the name she knew was familiar, “Ah yes!” she exclaimed as the information came to her, “The Captain mentioned her in passing at my check in. She must be quite a woman if she made Captain that young. Most of us are barely out of our Acadamy diapers” She leaned back and tipped the rest of her own glass down her throat.

“My ex used to always harp on about making Captain young, his whole life is planned around being one. He’d pretty much kiss her boots if he thought it’d help him advance his career faster,” she shrugged, “I think he’s rushing it too much, that he should get some experience before he gets all cocky. My grandmother’s main philosophy was “Those who take the direct route miss the scenary,” I don’t know if she was just saying it to hide the fact we were lost when we went on holidays or if it was actually her philosophy but she has a point either way. And some of those adventures turned out to be pretty fun.”

Lt. (j.g.) Janvier
CMO

Amelia smiled. “Looks like your grandmother was a wise woman.” She shrugged and leaned slightly forward as if she was about to tell the Doctor a secret. “Here between us… Wright… she creeps me out a little.” She leaned back again, her smile still on her lips. “But I’m sure she wouldn’t be opposed to give you information on what it takes to make Captain if you were really interested. Or you know…” Manning’s smile turned into a smirk. “You can send her information to your ex and watch him try to lick her boots.” She winked playfully. “I mean… I don’t know in what terms you are with him, and it is not my intention to pry. But… I can tell you I wouldn’t mind doing that to some of the guys I used to date…”

OOC: Apologies for the wait, I had some issues with my flatmates and had to find a new flat in a hurry. Sorting out all that drama took longer than I though.

OOC: No worries! I’ve done it in the past, so I can relate. :) – Joana

An amused smirk spread across Elaine’s features, as she pictured Fraiser following the stoic Wright around like a lost puppy, trying that smile of his on her, and attempting to anticipate all her needs. “Tempting,” she hummed, enjoying the mental image she was picturing, although she knew she could never do that to him. Paritally because she wasn’t that kind of person, and partially because she didn’t want him anywhere near her, as much as she would enjoy in seeing him grovel. “Not even for the guys I used to date, but the guys I used to know. I know a few arrogant know-it-alls that could be taken down a peg or two,” she grinned keeping a watchful eye on Enj who had jumped off her lap and on the seat next to her, to lap noisily at his water.

Amelia laughed a hearty laugh. “I like the way you think.” She said. “I know a few of those myself… especially having grown up in Oxford… I’m not sure if you ever visited the place, but I swear more than ninety percent of the town’s inhabitants are obnoxious and arrogant old men that educate their children to be the same way as them.” She waived at the bartender for another glass of whiskey. “Hopefully you’re not from a similar place…?”

Lt. Cmdr. Manning, XO

As not much seemed to be happening in the mess hall, Charlie decided to check out the lounge instead. She wandered in and sat herself down at the bar, stifling a yawn. She was decidedly dreadful at small talk but she decided she had better start somewhere.
