Charlie’s pace slowed to a crawl as she approached sickbay. She felt her pulse quicken as the doors slid open in front of her. ‘You’ve got this…’ she whispered under her breath as she stepped into sickbay and approached the CMO’s office. Nervously she pressed the chime and waited to be admitted. She did a quick breath check whilst she was waiting and checked she was presentable, hoping she wasn’t sweating too much. She wasn’t even sure why she was so nervous, she had dreamt her whole life of this moment, of starting her career as a doctor but somehow she felt woeful unprepared.

As she waited, a friendly nurse smiled and said good morning to which Charlie replied with “ho, yo, heya, yes…” followed by a little voice in her head saying, ‘well done genius, way to make a good first impression…’

  • Ensign Bailey (Med)

A muffled sound emitted from the CMO’s office almost as soon as the chime was rung, then a clutter and the doors of the office slid open as a voice of presumably the CMO growled, “Come - Enj we’ve - No - Get here!” Before Charlie could even blink what could only be described as a ball of black and white fluff barreled at her. It stopped just short of her, and stood up on it’s back legs, using her own ones to prop itself up and revealing itself to be some form of Terran dog. It’s tail wiggled furiously, even as a young woman, in about her mid 20s, scooped it up and held it, wiggling, in front of her. “I told you to behave,” she glared at the animal, “We’ll be discussing this later.” She tucked the animal under her arm and then turned to focus her attention on the woman before her.

Charlie was slightly taken aback by the rather unorthodox greeting and took a cautious step back but once she saw Enj’s adorable face she smiled and gave him a quick stroke on the head, leaving out a friendly hand for him to sniff.

Although the CMO was taller than the Ensign, her frame could only be described as petite and made her look smaller than she really was. What was more stricking, however, was how young the Doctor looked, she looked like she was barely out of the Acadamy, despite the pips on her collar that clearly indicated that she was a junior Lieutenant. She had soft green eyes, and a gentle smile, that was calming; contrasting with the zealous excitement of the black and white dog in her arms. As for her office, aside from a messy corner that had clearly become the animals home, and an overturned chair, the office was kept in a tidy. Various old-fashioned medical textbooks were stacked on the desk and on the floor beside the desk. The only personal touch other than the dogs bed and toys were two Starfleet awards, one the Decoration of Valor, and the other the medical Star Cross that hung on the wall behind her.
“My apologies, he gets a little… over excited whenever there’s a new crewman aboard.” She stuck out her free hand “Junior Lieutenant Janvier, I’m presuming by your blue uniform you’re either Ensign Matilda Romani from Science or Ensign Charlie Bailey my new doctor.”

Charlie smiled warmly and shook her head. “Not at all, he’s adorable, and it’s the friendliest welcome I’ve ever had!” she joked as she stroked him again. For a moment she was lost in petting Enj and then remembered why she was there and hastily shook her new boss’ hand. “Sorry, Ensign Charlie Bailey reporting for duty ma’am,” she said as she stood a little more to attention.

Charlie took a moment to take in Lt Janvier, she wasn’t really what she had expected. She had imagined that she would be a little older but she seemed to have a quiet confidence about her. She reminded Charlie a little of her mother, Elena, she too used to have that warm persona about her. Feeling herself start to get emotional as she remembered her mother she quickly snapped her attention back to the room. Let’s try and get through day 1 without a breakdown… she mentally scolded herself and focused her attention back on the CMO.

Elaine smiled, “No problem at all,” there was something akin to pride in her eyes as she glanced at the dog in her arms, “He loves people.” She walked into her office and placed Enj down on his bed. “Take a seat,” she said guesturing to the chair on the other side of the desk, while she seated herself in her own chair. “and don’t worry too much about formalities. I’m younger than most of my staff and it just makes me feel odd,”

Charlie smiled and took a seat, allowing herself to relax a little. She wasn’t sure why she had been worried, Lt Janvier seemed very welcoming and friendly.

“Have you been on the ship long ma’am?” She enquires, cringing at her inability to make small talk as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.

Elaine shook her head, “Just a couple of months, before that I served on a medical triage ship.” She leaned back casually in her chair, “What brings you to the Dresden?” she asked, “This is your first posting is it not?”

Bump

Charlie thought for a moment. “I wanted to serve on a starship because I wanted to be on the front line and be able to help people in need. My family was rescued by a star-fleet away team, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them…” she spoke with a touch of melancholy in her voice and clenched her jaw quickly after she spoke. The memories of that day still haunted her but they were also what drove her to succeed.

Elaine nodded, she’d wanted the exact same thing when she’d left Starfleet. It was why she’d picked the Ixlilton despite the problems it had raised with her ex-boyfriend Fraiser. She’d sacrificed him and her own safety in order to be able to help people that had needed her. As it turned out she’d been better off for it, as it had secured her a position here. She opened her mouth to respond, but movement caught her eye and she smiled instead. Perhaps picking up something in Charlies tone of voice or maybe it was his K9 6th sense, Enj jumped up from his bed in the corner and before Eliane could stop him had plopped himself in Charlies lap and trying to lick her face.

Charlie squeaked as the fur ball flew at her and then laughed as he tried to lick her face. “You certainly like to make people welcome don’t you?” she asked as she looked into Enj’s adorable face. She gently began to stroke him as she turned back to the CMO, it was certainly the most interesting introduction she had ever had. “Is there anything I should know ma’am? Any pre-existing medical conditions amongst the crew I should swot up on? I do have a specialty in microbiology and infectious diseases but I’m guessing you don’t get a lot of those?” she enquired as she continued to scratch Enj’s head.

OOC: Bump so it doesn’t get lost!

OOC: Apologies for the wait

IC: Elaine let out an exhasperated sigh and fixed Enj with a look that clearly said we’ll-talk-about-this-later, as if the dog was a young child that needed to be scolded. “He’s not meant to do that,” she said apologetically, “I haven’t been here long myself,” Elaine smiled, “But on a military vessal you wouldn’t expect it. However, this is space and you never know what you might find.” Her memory flashed to her first mission on the Ixlilton, where they’d discovered a prisoner of war colony that was rampant with diseases due to the lack of supplies and medical attention the POWs had been given. It had been a sad and sombering sight for the fresh out of the Acadamy Ensign Janvier.

“Junior Lieutenant Klienhoffer, has several pre-existing medial conditions that she prefers to be given natural remedies for so you may want to touch up on your ancient Humanoid medician. NE Janes is pregnant with her second baby, her first one was a miscarriage so that requires close monitoring. Aside from that just your usual aches and pains. But we are about to embark on our next mission, so I’m sure our quiet spelll won’t last for long.”

Charlie smiled warmly and nodded. “I’m sure it won’t!” she chuckled. “Is there anything you want to know about me?” she asked, not being particularly adept at small talk. She spent most of her time reading and shutting herself off from other people, it was part of why she chose a starship, to try and push her out of her comfort zone a bit.

Ensign Bailey (Doctor)

Elaine quirked an eyebrow, “Is there anything you think I should know?” she asked softly a slight smirk tugging at the corner of her lips, letting Charlie know that the question didn’t have to be answered if she didn’t want to answer it.

As Elaine spoke, a flash of images appeared in Charlie’s mind. She remembered the heat of the fire and the acrid taste of smoke in the back of her throat, her eyes stinging trying to see a way through with her little sister on her back. The last image of her mother haunted her every day, the look of desperation in her eyes as the transporter beam whisked Charlie and her sister to safety as she was left to die. Charlie closed her eyes and took a deep breath before smiling and shaking her head. “No, I don’t think so…” she said warmly, her gentle smile betraying the chaotic thoughts in her head. ‘Not yet…’ the little voice in her head added.
