Ellie’s leave had been nice, she returned to the ship feeling a bit more relaxed than she had before. As she entered main engineering, she looked around most of the crew was still on shore leave, this was her chance to work on a personal project that she had been planning. It was one that she hoped would allow her to walk again. Going into one of the workshops off the back of main engineering, she pulled up the plans that she had gone over and set to work on the exoskeleton suit that she would eventually wear. She worked quietly, listening to soft music in the background.
OOC, welcome back Chief, care for some company?
OOC: Sure Come on it.
Stores had switched from his morning space walk, to walking the Dresdens decks, and this morning as housekeeping had almost finished there work. In fact things were going so well that he had moved back into the crows nest.
This morning tho was different he heard music coming from the machine shop, and that had him curious. Following the sound he stepped into to shop three to see the Chief Engineer bent over some project.
Pausing a moment in surprise he watched a moment. The woman was an impressive tech. Smiling to his self he stepped back to leave her in peace…
…only ruining it buy banging his elbow into the door frame.
Clinton “Stores”Reed, Supercargo
“I didn’t mean to disturb you m’am” this was true, and despite the metallic throb in his elbow and the cold numbness in the side of his hand and pinkie, he was glad of the invitation . “but I would love to help you.”
“Beats the steady steam of reports I wrote for Commander Miller, over leave”Stores grinned, he looked forward to just being a hand, and letting the LT make the hard calls.
Stepping up to the bench, but careful to stay clear of the Chief Engineer’s work space. “Can’t promise that I can do more than hold a torch for you, but I will try.”
Ellie smiled “I’m sure there were a lot of reports to be done.” She said “Was there anything exciting while I was on vacation.” Ellie asked as she worked on adding a couple of electrodes on the skeleton of the suit “So would you like to know what we’re doing?” She asked.
“Well, if I am going to have any hope of helping you that would be useful” Stores chuckled.
“ As to anything exiting” a pause more for dramatic effect than to think, he went on.” Not much honestly.” Which was true, outside of the petty squabbling between the civilian ship writes and the federation engineers it was quiet. “ How about yourself? Did you enjoy yourself?”
Ellie sighed “I went and saw my dad and my daughter.” She said “It was a nice change of sceneary.” She said
Stores leaned in, seeing what to him looked to be a light weight exo- frame. Realization slowly dawning on him. “ nice work there.” After a moment to orientate himself. “What can I do for you?”
Ellie smiled “Well, as you can see it’s an exoskeleton and I am hoping that it will get me out of this chair and able to walk at least for short periods of time.” She said “I am hoping that it will work.” She added “So what I need you to do is help affix the wiring to the electrodes.
“That I may be able to do” Stores chuckled as he fished a small case from his breast pocket. Opening the case, he fished a small probe out and a small pair of forceps. Adjusting his visor to ten times magnification, Stores slipped the case back in his pocket and began scanning the system to identify what leads went to which sensor, electrode or actuator.
After beginning to make the connections, ventured what he’s was sure a stupid question, but if he was going to really help he needed background. “ I know this is stupidly basic, but why didn’t regenerative medicine or neural implants work?”
Stores grounding in this branch of medical science came from personal curiosity involving his own rehabilitation. He wasn’t an expert to be sure but sometimes that wasn’t a bad thing.
Ellie glanced over at Clinton “The damage was too significant and they tried.” She said as they worked “They tried a variety of various treatments to repair the damage. Ellie showed Clinton the scans of her spine and pointed out the various shards of bone that were still present that would cause more damage if they were removed now.
“Doesn’t slow you down much if any, but I was curious as to how it effects this project.” Honestly Stores didn’t even notice anymore. “What processor are you using to handle reflexes?”
Despite the small talk, Stores worked with deft skill. He hand built a lot of pre replicator tech, so was comfortable with the hand building a prototype.
“Not sure yet. I’m still working that piece out. It will have to be a fairly decent one.” She added “What are your thoughts?” Ellie asked as they continued to work together. “As to how it effects this project, well it it hoped to get me out of this chair more often.” She said “It gets old sitting all the time.” Ellie joked slightly.
“I thought they had a special class on how to sit wile others worked when they trained Department Heads.” Stores chided as he worked” All kidding aside, I do have some interest in the hardware they put in my head. Thus I keep tabs on some of this stuff. I remember the Doctor was always on me wile I was rehabbing to stop looking at my feet or it would compromise my inner ears ability to balance, and if my biology and physiology classes as a kid are right most of our reflexes actually reside in our spines, so we will need a fairly robust processor to manage both. I would think one from a tri-corder would work.” The challenges they faced bad his mind racing with ideas, but this was the Chiefs project and he didn’t want to take it from her. “ Have other ideas, but they come after you have prototyped this one, and start improving on it” Stores mind raced ahead, but many of his thoughts were tied off the shelf parts that an away team would have so as to make field repaired easer.
Ellie glanced over at Clinton “I hadn’t thought of a tricorder.” She said “I wonder if that would work.” She said thoughtfully “I’m open to any ideas that you have.” She said “I”ve been working on this alone for so long, I think I’ve lost sight of what it needs to be.”
“Then define what it needs to be for you, I know that’s such a basic concept for us who work on this” Stores made an expansive gesture to encompass the ship” but sometimes we over complicate things.” Continuing to work, having one of those conversations that only professionals can have, discussing abstract philosophy wile up to their necks in work. “I am sure you have done a search on similar devices in the data base,” not quite a question as he actually ran that exact search. “It looks like you adapted Dr. Basheir’s work on the low gravity exo-frame., After you get it built you will have to teach it to walk, that’s were the processor comes in.”
After a few more minutes work, “your going to have to bring Elaine in on this at some point, we need some one who specializes in the wetware interface.”
Ellie nodded “I know. I have been trying to decide when it would be best to bring her in to start on that interface.” She said “And yes I have based this on Bashir’s work.” She said “Let’s get Elaine in here now and we can work on the interfaces.” She said and touched her comm badge =^=Lt Janvier could you meet me in the machine shop in Main Engineering. =^=
=^= I’ll be there in 15 =^= Elaine looked at her young patient, “It looks like I haven’t got all day anymore. So how about you put your arm out like this and I can give you your shots?” She had to suppress a sigh when the young boy stubbornly shook his head and buried his face into Enj’s fur. “Come now,” she cajoled, “If we take too long Mister Enj might get bored and cuddle somebody else…”
She entered Engineering, nearly exactly when she said she would, and zeroed in on Stores and Ellie. She had a medical bag strapped across her shoulder, resting on her hips so that it moved with them as she walked. “I wasn’t sure if this was a medical call. How can I be of aide?”
Lt. Elaine Janvier, CMO
Standing up from the stool he had been perched on “Have a seat Doc, this is the Chief’s bailiwick.” Stores was always happy to see Elaine, and in-fact he had a goofy smile on his face at the sight of her.
Elaine lay her bag down on the floor next to her as she took her seat. She couldn’t help returning Stores’ grin with a gentle one of her own. He had such a light aura about him that she found it near impossible to resist him. Privately she thought that in moments like this he was like the human version of Enj. It was a contrast with the CE’s own more aloof nature. Looking at the pair of them together, it was obvious they were working on something together. Was it Stores natural affect on people or the project that made Ellie look more enlivened than Elaine had ever seen her? Or simply because the two woman didn’t have many interactions outside of the necessary check-ups and physicals that Ellie wasn’t particularly fond of. Whatever it was it was nice.
Lt. Janvier, CMO
Ellie looked up “Hey Doc. So what I need from you is some help with some bioneural energy patches. Basically what I am doing is creating an exoskeleton that will allow me to walk again, instead of just being in a chair all the time. It gets rather boring just hovering around.” Ellie explained and handed Elaine a PaDD with the specifications “Do you think you’ll be able to help with that?”
“Absolutely,” Elaine said with a smile. The design specifications that Ellie had created were intricate. The doctor admired the amount of detail that the Engineer had already put into her work, even if she only understood some of it. Most of the Engineering jargon went over her head but she didn’t need that to be able to appreciate Ellie’s hard effort. “So you need something that can translate your brains electromagnetic signals into commands for the exo-frame?” she queried hoping she had understood the schematics correctly.
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“In a nutshell, yes.” Ellie said as she pulled up the schematics on a larger screen “It’s theorized that the energy pulses will be able to tie in with my brain and the muscles will follow suit. At least that’s the theory behind it.” She said “I am using notes from Dr. Crusher when she had to treat Worf after he broke his back.” Ellie said as she turned her attention back to what she was working on.
OOC: Hey guys, I have split this thread to make it more legible, but in line with what Jerome mentioned before, this is just a reminder that using characters from actual Star Trek canon is against STF’s terms of service, and as such I will have to void this post. However, I think it is safe to assume that after that particular procedure in TNG other doctors must have since studied it and even performed it on other patients, so you can always repost the same post referencing a different doctor and patient that are not canon! :) – Joana
I have closed the thread to avoid further issues.
