Lay of the Land - Corridors (Tag Forgrave)

“In the interest of honesty, Forgrave, I came from Intel, so there is no telling why I am here.” She rushed on before he got the wrong idea. “I was a counselor for them. Had to go through all the training so I could have the clearance levels. That way anyone who came to us could actually talk to us. Most I ever did was a couple of information gathering stints, early on. I won’t lie, when I first joined, Intel was what I wanted. I was young and idealistic. I figured out real fast that reality didn’t live up to my childhood fantasies. But this position came open and, like I said, I always wanted a position like this.” She paused thinking about it. “There were other positions, before, but I just couldn’t justify taking them knowing the people I was working with would have to start all over with someone new. My own career choices were unimportant after what they had been through.” She moved to the next turbolift and hit the call button. “I guess it troubles me because I’m a counselor first, and I don’t want anything interfering with that.” Bethany was enjoying the conversation, but after the welcome from Holloway and Revneer, she was fully expecting Forgrave to opt not to continue to walk with her.

Issac was silent for a moment, digesting what he had been told. So the other shoe drops.... More damned Intelligence shenanigans, or coincidence? Issac considered himself a realist - coincidences did happen; though one shouldn’t assume that by default. And there was more to StarFleet than the Intelligence division; though they did seem to have their tendrils everywhere one could look. But even if all of the Dresden’s personnel changes had been driven by the shadowy organization, Gadi and Holloway were still people, not automatons.

“Well, I ain’t gone lie to ya, that makes me a bit suspicious. Whole lot of people getting shifted around all at once… Don’t reckon you’d’ve known, but the previous Security Chief, who I so recently took over for, had ties to Intelligence as well? I don’t know his particulars of course, but he’d mentioned it to me off-hand at one point.”

Bethany shook her head, “No, I wasn’t aware. I mean, I won’t lie and say I didn’t know about the Captain, but I didn’t look at the crew history. But people get moved. Sometimes it has nothing to do with Intelligence. Every department has their own agenda. People often mistake Intelligence for Internal Affairs though. We aren’t the same.”

Issac continued walking with Bethany, keeping a relaxed posture despite his racing mind. “I’ll take yer word that yer a Counselor first; but as I said, I am suspicious. Ain’t nothing against ya, like I already said. I figure my role ain’t changed - keep the ship and crew safe.” Issac shrugged. “You’re part of the crew; and I got no cause to accuse ya of anythin’ without evidence. Counselors take oaths; much like Docs. Fer my part, I’ll trust ta that.”

She looks at him surprised. “I have a holovid of the day I took my oaths.” She smiles, the memory obviously a proud one. “The XO seemed surprised when I reminded him I had taken oaths. As if he didn’t know what I was talking about. Maybe it’s just an Earth thing.” It had surprised her that Revneer hadn’t taken oaths himself. Or maybe he was trying to trip her up. “Well as the security chief you certainly would have access to investigate me. I certainly wouldn’t mind if you did. Might put both our minds at rest. Like I said, I hope it’s lucky happenstance. But after hearing that there have been so many changes, I’m strongly pessimistic on that count.”

Perhaps to Bethany’s surprise, Issac joined her in the turbolift. ‘Where to next?”

Issac Forgrave, CoS

Bethany was surprised and she relaxed subtly. When she took this position, she was not expecting to be so fiercely despised by the crew, for some it bordering on near hatred. She’d actually contemplated if it would be better to resign her commission and start a private practice somewhere back home. “Hmmm…I’ve been to the shuttle bay and cargo bay 5. Was there until 0200 this morning. Deck 23.” And the computer trilled and the turbolift took off.

“Cargo bay at 0200? I’d say you’re liable to have run inta Stores, then - he’s a fairly constant fixture there.” Issac turned to face Gadi, leaning against the turbolift wall. “Iffin’ ya don’t mind me asking, what were you doing? Trouble with yer supplies?”

Issac Forgrave, CoS

Bethany looks little embarrassed and laughs just a little. “Oh, no my supplies were fine. My shuttle got shipped to the cargo bay instead of docking in the shuttle bay.” She looks over at him holding back more laughter and biting her lip. “So, you see, what happened was, I have this mentor who…well they, thought it would be funny to put a new security system in my shuttle for me. The flight out was 2 weeks and they kept going on and on about how bad I am at tactical training and self defense. And they installed this…this monster of a security system…Well ask Stores about it. Anyway, unless your biosignature is keyed to it, it will shock you if you touch the hull. I tried to deactivate it in flight, but I’m not an engineer. When I arrived, I input the shuttle bay chief’s biosignature to my shuttle till I could take care of it.” She stops huffing out a deep breath, it was really embarrassing that F’actar had done that to her.

“Some of the crew decided to play chicken with my shuttle, ended up in sickbay. Stores has the whole thing on video. No one told me till I went to get some gear I’d left in the shuttle that Stores had moved it to the cargo bay to keep people away from it. I spent all night taking the stupid thing out. Probably would have fried myself if Stores hadn’t helped me deactivate it.” Hopefully, by now, Stores had recycled all the pieces from that stupid system so it couldn’t be put back in. She wasn’t sure how Forgrave would take having shuttle that shocked people on board his ship. Of course it wasn’t dangerous anymore, she hoped.
