Kerilah finished chopping the last of the peppers and was straining the brine of the Hasperat for her souffle. She had already plated all the canapes and the chilled oysters and sushi were beautifully arranged on the ice bed when she decided to resume her log entry…

“I’m not sure what my new responsibilities as Assistant Counselor will be, or how they will mesh with my current duties, but I’m confident that it will be a way for me
to further hone my skills. I think Dr. Janvier and I will get on well, and I really liked Counselor Gadi. Of course, I haven’t met the Captain yet, but Commander
Renveer seems dedicated, and brilliant. Personally, I find the man distracting though. He’s incredibly handsome and genuine, but there’s something beneath the
surface that’s… sad. I’ve got too much on my plate right now to worry about my romantic chances with the ship’s XO! Still, I know myself and I’m definitely going to
find out if he’s seeing anyone.
Currently, I am finishing preparations for my ‘open house welcome’. I’m nervous. I start duty tomorrow morning and wanted to meet a few of my crewmates before I
see them on the job. I didn’t invite Senior Staff because I wanted everyone to be at ease. Plus, it gives me a chance to be myself, too. I hope the gamble pays off
though. It was a bold move to plan a social event when you don’t know anyone. …Funny. I’m not feeling very bold right now”.

Kerilah was cooking down the peppers, now and preparing the filling. She took out a spoon and gave the mixture a little taste, before deciding on what to add, if anything. The first wave of heat spread through the flesh of her lip with a bite, then abruptly disappeared; allowing for the second, more subtle wave of capsaicin to begin firing the receptors in her tongue. [A bit more brine] Keri thought to herself. She loved cooking. It relaxed her. Which she needed right now because her little gathering was scheduled to begin in about 30 minutes and she had no idea what to expect. She took a deep swallow of her Spring Wine and went back to the souffle.

Once the souffle was cooking, Keri went to get dressed. Something simple, but comfortable yet still stylish. She took her hair out of its tether and the curls spilled down, over her shoulders. When she returned to her make-shift kitchenette, she couldn’t help but smile. She had invested quite a lot in having a scaled-down professional stove reconfigured to avoid fire hazards, but she needed to cook, not replicate some meals! And though she didn’t know if it had been the Commander or the Captain, but she had gotten approval to keep it with her when she was assigned to The Dresden. The souffle still had another 10 minutes, but she could open the door now and just see who showed up.

OOC: I wasn’t really sure how the communication would’ve worked, but I would have sent out the Trek equivalent of an email blast to junior officers, ensigns and crewmen - especially those involved with Medical; but ALL are welcome!

A strong knock made Wiles groan as he pulled on his second boot while hopping to the door. He called “open!” as he approached, causing the portal to slide aside to reveal his assistant division officer, Ensign Astin. “We don’t have to be early, you know,” Wiles whined in exasperation as he righted himself and tousled his shaggy blonde hair.

Jenni’s face fell as she scanned his outfit. “Well we won’t be now, don’t wear your uniform are you kidding? She’s gonna think we’re the stiffest crew in the quadrant.” The stocky woman crossed her muscled arms over her chest and glowered at Wiles. “Change.”

A moment later, Wiles emerged dressed a bit more akin to Jenni. Wiles in a solid forest green T-shirt with black slacks and shiny shoes, Jenni in her red workout tank top and baggy gray sweats with muted trainers. “Better,” Jenni said begrudgingly.

After a short trip up one floor and a few doors down, they stopped outside Ensign Winter’s door. “And see look, we’re still early!” Wiles said pointedly.
“Glad I’m not the only one,” came Ensign Ongsteadlea’s voice from down the hall. The petite woman with her hair in a pixie cut grinned at the security officers as she sauntered up. “Oh don’t be shy, come on let’s make her feel like part of the family, yeah?” She shrugged her shoulders to reposition the leather jacket that was too big for her and rang the chime.

Osten and Astin shared a look behind Ongsteadlea’s back as they waited for the door to open, as if to say ‘oh great’.

OOC: Yeah you could describe that however you’d like, like an email sent to PaDDs or a notice posted in the mess hall or a comm badge invitation using these symbols to indicate that the call is happening: =^=. Also, I’m using something called NEs here, short for ‘Nameless Ensigns’. NE can be background characters like red shirts in the original series, or they can be lower-decks type characters with their own distinct personalities. Using NEs inside sims is always encouraged to add something to the story, but in main sims, you should ask the GM before introducing an NE, as oftentimes they’re writing the stories with our main characters in mind. And as with normal characters, NEs are controlled by the writer that introduces them.

Kerilah was just ready to open the door and check down the hall like a nervous kid when she heard the door chime, so she happily headed toward the door.
<Computer - play Postmodern Jukebox at 45% of normal volume> She opened the door to welcome her guests.

“Hello! Welcome! Please, come in and make yourselves comfortable. Thanks for coming”. She recognized Ensign Astin from some idle chit-chat in the lift.

Jenni smiled, warmly and made her way around - “This is Wiles…and this”, gesturing to the smaller woman behind them, “is Ensign Ongsteadlea; or Alex as we call her. How are you settling in?”

Keri led them into her quarters and the door closed behind them with a hiss. It was nice to just have a conversation, as opposed to interviewing, reporting, and just trying to be ultra-professional at all times. The music was playing a 1920’s big band rendition of ‘All About that Bass’ from the 21st century as she poured herself some Spring Wine and answered the question.
“It’s going OK, I think”, she said with a soft giggle. “But then, I have no idea what anyone thinks of me, yet. Can I offer you anything to drink?” Keri used her wine glass to indicate the make-shift bar she had set up behind the Sushi and oysters, where there were various bottles of spirits. “Or I have synthehol if you prefer?”

[We’re off to a pretty good start, I think. I think Astin and I could be friends, she’s so down-to-earth. Ok, that was funny.]

OOC: Oh! So an NEs is like an NPC from standard RPGs? Gotchya! I still haven’t seen anything on the CMO check-in - should I be concerned? If one of you could email me, I’d appreciate it. And please, ANYONE feel free to join my little impromptu soiree, I could use the support. LOL And thank YOU, Ben for jumping in!

OOC: OMG! Postmodern Jukebox!!! Yes!!! :D Also, I don’t think I had the opportunity to say this “in person” yet, but welcome to the Dresden, Kimberly! I’m glad to see you settling in well! :) – Joana

IC:
The moment Johan had seen the invite, he had dismissed it. The only company he was planning on having that evening was that of the molds growing on his Petri dish. It wasn’t until he was forced to promise Lumi that he would socialize with the crew, that Ensign Winter’s memo came back to his mind.

And that was why, a little after the scheduled time, Ensign Johansson was standing by the doors to the new Ensign’s quarters, hoping against all hope that he wasn’t the first one to arrive. He had neatly combed his light blonde hair to the side, put on a light blue button down, a pair of dark trousers, and a blazer. He had thought about a tie, but at last minute had decided against it. He was nervous. Too nervous. Parties were not at all his element.

With a trembling index, Johan pressed the chime and waited to be invited in.

(A very nervous) Ensign Johansson, Science
