Kerilah finished chopping the last of the peppers and was straining the brine of the Hasperat for her souffle. She had already plated all the canapes and the chilled oysters and sushi were beautifully arranged on the ice bed when she decided to resume her log entry…

<Computer? Personal Log; continue from last point >
“I’m not sure what my new responsibilities as Assistant Counselor will be, or how they will mesh with my current duties, but I’m confident that it will be a way for me
to further hone my skills. I think Dr. Janvier and I will get on well, and I really liked Counselor Gadi. Of course, I haven’t met the Captain yet, but Commander
Renveer seems dedicated, and brilliant. Personally, I find the man distracting though. He’s incredibly handsome and genuine, but there’s something beneath the
surface that’s… sad. I’ve got too much on my plate right now to worry about my romantic chances with the ship’s XO! Still, I know myself and I’m definitely going to
find out if he’s seeing anyone.
Currently, I am finishing preparations for my ‘open house welcome’. I’m nervous. I start duty tomorrow morning and wanted to meet a few of my crewmates before I
see them on the job. I didn’t invite Senior Staff because I wanted everyone to be at ease. Plus, it gives me a chance to be myself, too. I hope the gamble pays off
though. It was a bold move to plan a social event when you don’t know anyone. …Funny. I’m not feeling very bold right now”.

Kerilah was cooking down the peppers, now and preparing the filling. She took out a spoon and gave the mixture a little taste, before deciding on what to add, if anything. The first wave of heat spread through the flesh of her lip with a bite, then abruptly disappeared; allowing for the second, more subtle wave of capsaicin to begin firing the receptors in her tongue. [A bit more brine] Keri thought to herself. She loved cooking. It relaxed her. Which she needed right now because her little gathering was scheduled to begin in about 30 minutes and she had no idea what to expect. She took a deep swallow of her Spring Wine and went back to the souffle.

Once the souffle was cooking, Keri went to get dressed. Something simple, but comfortable yet still stylish. She took her hair out of its tether and the curls spilled down, over her shoulders. When she returned to her make-shift kitchenette, she couldn’t help but smile. She had invested quite a lot in having a scaled-down professional stove reconfigured to avoid fire hazards, but she needed to cook, not replicate some meals! And though she didn’t know if it had been the Commander or the Captain, but she had gotten approval to keep it with her when she was assigned to The Dresden. The souffle still had another 10 minutes, but she could open the door now and just see who showed up.

OOC: I wasn’t really sure how the communication would’ve worked, but I would have sent out the Trek equivalent of an email blast to junior officers, ensigns and crewmen - especially those involved with Medical; but ALL are welcome!

A strong knock made Wiles groan as he pulled on his second boot while hopping to the door. He called “open!” as he approached, causing the portal to slide aside to reveal his assistant division officer, Ensign Astin. “We don’t have to be early, you know,” Wiles whined in exasperation as he righted himself and tousled his shaggy blonde hair.

Jenni’s face fell as she scanned his outfit. “Well we won’t be now, don’t wear your uniform are you kidding? She’s gonna think we’re the stiffest crew in the quadrant.” The stocky woman crossed her muscled arms over her chest and glowered at Wiles. “Change.”

A moment later, Wiles emerged dressed a bit more akin to Jenni. Wiles in a solid forest green T-shirt with black slacks and shiny shoes, Jenni in her red workout tank top and baggy gray sweats with muted trainers. “Better,” Jenni said begrudgingly.

After a short trip up one floor and a few doors down, they stopped outside Ensign Winter’s door. “And see look, we’re still early!” Wiles said pointedly.
“Glad I’m not the only one,” came Ensign Ongsteadlea’s voice from down the hall. The petite woman with her hair in a pixie cut grinned at the security officers as she sauntered up. “Oh don’t be shy, come on let’s make her feel like part of the family, yeah?” She shrugged her shoulders to reposition the leather jacket that was too big for her and rang the chime.

Osten and Astin shared a look behind Ongsteadlea’s back as they waited for the door to open, as if to say ‘oh great’.

(Ensign Osten, Security Division Three Officer
Ensign Astin, Assistant Security Division Three Division Officer
Ensign Ongsteadlea, Engineer)

OOC: Yeah you could describe that however you’d like, like an email sent to PaDDs or a notice posted in the mess hall or a comm badge invitation using these symbols to indicate that the call is happening: =^=. Also, I’m using something called NEs here, short for ‘Nameless Ensigns’. NE can be background characters like red shirts in the original series, or they can be lower-decks type characters with their own distinct personalities. Using NEs inside sims is always encouraged to add something to the story, but in main sims, you should ask the GM before introducing an NE, as oftentimes they’re writing the stories with our main characters in mind. And as with normal characters, NEs are controlled by the writer that introduces them.

Kerilah was just ready to open the door and check down the hall like a nervous kid when she heard the door chime, so she happily headed toward the door.
<Computer - play Postmodern Jukebox at 45% of normal volume> She opened the door to welcome her guests.

“Hello! Welcome! Please, come in and make yourselves comfortable. Thanks for coming”. She recognized Ensign Astin from some idle chit-chat in the lift.

Jenni smiled, warmly and made her way around - “This is Wiles…and this”, gesturing to the smaller woman behind them, “is Ensign Ongsteadlea; or Alex as we call her. How are you settling in?”

Keri led them into her quarters and the door closed behind them with a hiss. It was nice to just have a conversation, as opposed to interviewing, reporting, and just trying to be ultra-professional at all times. The music was playing a 1920’s big band rendition of ‘All About that Bass’ from the 21st century as she poured herself some Spring Wine and answered the question.
“It’s going OK, I think”, she said with a soft giggle. “But then, I have no idea what anyone thinks of me, yet. Can I offer you anything to drink?” Keri used her wine glass to indicate the make-shift bar she had set up behind the Sushi and oysters, where there were various bottles of spirits. “Or I have synthehol if you prefer?”

[We’re off to a pretty good start, I think. I think Astin and I could be friends, she’s so down-to-earth. Ok, that was funny.]

(Dr. Winter, aCNS)

OOC: Oh! So an NEs is like an NPC from standard RPGs? Gotchya! I still haven’t seen anything on the CMO check-in - should I be concerned? If one of you could email me, I’d appreciate it. And please, ANYONE feel free to join my little impromptu soiree, I could use the support. LOL And thank YOU, Ben for jumping in!

OOC: NEs are a strange mix of both PC and NPC. It depends, honestly. Some NEs are literally just faces passing in the hallway, whereas others have more developed personality and backstories. Astin and Ongsteadlea, for example, are more developed than a NPC might be. Typically, unless stated otherwise, NEs that are introduced by a writer are their property to write. So Astin and Ongsteadlea would be controlled by me throughout the thread. But you are free to “adopt” Astin for this thread if you’d like! Having three characters in one thread was a bit ambitious on my part anyways, lol. Also, tag on the bridge thread for Dr. Winter!

OOC: OMG! Postmodern Jukebox!!! Yes!!! :D Also, I don’t think I had the opportunity to say this “in person” yet, but welcome to the Dresden, Kimberly! I’m glad to see you settling in well! :) – Joana

IC:
The moment Johan had seen the invite, he had dismissed it. The only company he was planning on having that evening was that of the molds growing on his Petri dish. It wasn’t until he was forced to promise Lumi that he would socialize with the crew, that Ensign Winter’s memo came back to his mind.

And that was why, a little after the scheduled time, Ensign Johansson was standing by the doors to the new Ensign’s quarters, hoping against all hope that he wasn’t the first one to arrive. He had neatly combed his light blonde hair to the side, put on a light blue button down, a pair of dark trousers, and a blazer. He had thought about a tie, but at last minute had decided against it. He was nervous. Too nervous. Parties were not at all his element.

With a trembling index, Johan pressed the chime and waited to be invited in.

(A very nervous) Ensign Johansson, Science

Alex Onsteadlea had sprung to the bar as soon as Keri mentioned it, licking her lips as her eyes scanned the liquors greedily. “Aw yeah, I was hoping it’d be that kind of party!” She swiped a handle of tequila and poured two shots. She held one out in Wiles’ direction with an encouraging look. Wiles shook his hand and mimicked a silent gag, causing Alex to roll her eyes and take the shot herself, before shrugging and downing the second she had poured as well.

When the door to the quarters chimed, Wiles glanced at Keri. Seeing that she was speaking with Jenni, Wiles rose from the couch he had just settled into and moved to let the newcomer in.

As the door slid open and Wiles found himself smiling at Johansson, he immediately felt a little more subconscious about his rather plain apparel. “Hi,” he said with a slight catch in his voice. “Um, sorry, you have the right room, if you’re here for Ensign Winter’s shindig. She’s back there.” Wiles motioned over his shoulder with a thumb, then realized he was standing in the other ensign’s way. “Come on in,” he continued quickly as he moved aside, “we were just doing introductions.”

(Ensign Osten and NE Ongesteadle)

Johan smiled at the familiar face. Him and Osten were in different departments, and he had never really taken the time to know the Security Ensign (although, Johansson hadn’t really taken the time to get to know anyone, with the exception of his vast mold collection) but they had both been on the Dresden long enough to have seen each other around the corridors and the mess hall.

“Hi. Thanks.” Johan said walking in, and looking past Osten’s shoulder in the direction he had indicated. He could see two Ensigns talking by what seemed to be a makeshift bar. He assumed their host was one of them.

Kerilah was smiling at Alex over by the bar [Did she just take TWO shot?! I kinda love that!] she thought as she continued chatting with Jenni. “So, were you here from the beginning, or did you get assigned here after everyone else, like me?” Jenni had been so warm and open, it was like talking to someone she had known for a while already. Then she watched Wiles heading toward the door. Someone else had arrived, and she knew she should make a point to meet them, but she did want to finish her conversation. Renveer had been right, she just needed to take a chance and get to know people. Keri grabbed a slice of Hasperat and continued listening…

(Dr. Winter, Ens.)

OOC: Ok, great! And thanks. No, I hadn’t seen the prompt for the Bridge, but I will look again. LOL Been waiting for that Tag!

Thanks for the welcome, Joana! And yes, so glad you know Postmodern Jukebox! My husband and I put it on in the background anytime we have people over for dinner. It’s great ambiance music AND a wonderful conversation starter. LOL

OOC: Indeed! :) – Joana

IC:
Looking around at the small group of people, Johansson couldn’t help but feeling out of place and unsure about where to start. It was a feeling that he was becoming far too familiar with. He knew he should probably speak to Ensign Winter as she was the one that had so kindly put the event together, but he didn’t want to interrupt the ongoing conversation. Remembering that Osten had just mentioned something about introductions, he turned to the Security Ensign and held out a hand for a handshake. “I’m Johan, by the way. Johan Johansson.” There was a hint of a Scandinavian accent in his speech. “I don’t think we’ve properly met before.”

Ensign Johansson, Science

Wiles had been standing a bit awkwardly next tp Johan as the other ensign had looked about the room, wanting to continue to conversation but also wanting Johan to feel free to go where he pleased. When Johan offered his hand, Wiles smiled warmly. “I’m Wiles. Uh, Osten. A pleasure to meet you.” He accepted the handshake and shook in a short friendly manner, as to not be too formal with the introduction.

“Okay wait, I HAVE to ask,” Onsteadlea said in a brazen tone as she swooped in to join the conversation. “Why the two Johans? Is that like a family thing? Is your dad named Johan too, like all the guys are named Johan so that the last name ‘Johans-son’ is factually accurate?” She narrowed her eyes and waited for him to answer expectatntly.

Wiles paled a bit at the question, embarrassed that his friend would be so blunt. But that was Onsteadlea, for you.

(Ensign Osten and NE Ongsteadlea)

Johan was startled by the new Ensign and by the question. Well, more so by the former than by the latter. As his mind worried about how abruptly his handshake had ended and whether or not it might have seemed rude on his part, the Scientist mumbled a few sounds before actually fully processing what was happening in front of them.

“Uh… um… I uh… well, my dad’s name is Johan too. And yes… that’s the origin of the name. We have many like it in Sweden… Eriksson, Andersson, and so on, but nowadays it matching the name of ones father is mostly out of tradition than anything else. The surname itself passes along to the next generation much like any other would…” Johan wondered if his answer had been clear enough, but he didn’t have a lot of time to ponder on it, as the host of the party herself joined the conversation.

After chatting for awhile with Alex, she left to get some food and talk with her colleagues, Keri saw an opportunity to welcome her new guest. She saw that he was looking a little lost, but making a noble effort to make conversation. [Well, at least he’s trying instead of hiding in the corner…] she thought as she approached him. He was awkwardly talking to someone else by the Sushi bar when she came over and smiled, warmly.

“Welcome! I’m Kerilah Winter, the new Doctor. Thanks so much for coming. And you are?…” she extended a hand to the man and waiting to hear his name.

(Dr. Winter, Ens)

OOC: Fixing a split!

IC: Wiles was glad for the distraction from Onsteadlea’s awkward question, and stepped aside to allow Kerilah to approach Johansson unimpeded. Onsteadlea made a face of disapproval as she was interrupted, and gave Johansson a look that said ‘I’m not letting this go’.

(Ensign Osten, Security Division Three Officer)

Johan tried to silently tell Wiles that it was alright with a glance of his own, but he wasn’t sure how successful he had been. “Hi.” He finally turned to the new Doctor with a shy smile. “I’m Johan…” His voice trailed off, suddenly self-conscious about his last name. “I work in the Science department. Thank you for organizing this. And uh… welcome to the Dresden. How are you liking it so far?”

Ensign Johansson, Science

I’ve enjoyed it, so far. Although I haven’t got to meet much of the crew yet, thus this little get-together”, she said gesturing towards the room. She couldn’t help but notice that Johan looked nervous. “Thank you for coming, by the way,” she offered with a gentle smile. “What can you tell me about life on the Dresden, Johan?

It always seemed to her, that socially awkward, or nervous people, didn’t often interact with others, but they did observe others. Keri always considered it a shame that more people didn’t take the time to get to know people who didn’t blend in with the crowd. In her experience, they were usually the most interesting people. [I hope he gets to feel comfortable around me, eventually. I bet he’d be fun, given half the chance], she thought to herself as she looked to Johan, trying not to make him feel pressured.

(Dr. Winter, Ensign)

OOC: Oops! I’m so sorry, I completely missed this one…! – Joana

IC:
“Oh, uh…” Johan blushed slightly, as he tried to string words together, worried that his life might sound a bit too boring. “… I, uh… it’s definitely great to be out here, in the front line of space exploration…” In the frontline of space exploration… what is wrong with you, Johansson!? The young Ensign kicked himself mentally for his sentence. It was almost as if he could hear his sister mocking him inside his head. “I usually spend most of my time in the lab though. I am a microbiologist… so I am afraid my life on board is not as exciting as Starfleet makes it sound like on their leaflets…” He cleared his throat nervously before giving Winter a shy but genuine smile. “I’m sure that, as a Doctor, you’ll have a much more different experience.”

Ensign Johansson, Science

Keri giggled softly, “You’d be surprised, actually. The day to day of a Doctor is pretty boring. Scraps, cuts, headaches, the common cold…it’s not all frontier medicine and exciting discoveries like the pamphlets said for me, either. Besides, it’s all important work. If a Senior Officer has a migraine, or an engineer has a stomach bug, a lot can be affected. Microbiology is no different. Without your efforts, I don’t have the understanding necessary to help others feel better. Or the Captain doesn’t understand a microorganism we’ve encountered. Don’t sell yourself short, Johan!”, she concluded and smiled at him, warmly.

He was nice. A bit self-deprecating, but nice. Hopefully, she had gotten him to see his work with a little more depth. It was fascinating to her. She looked at him as a doctor of an entire microcosm that most people were oblivious to, how could anyone not be impressed by that? All in all, she was feeling pretty good about the party and hoped others were enjoying themselves.
