Picking an away team was never easy. There were so many good officers on the ship, each of them would bring something uniquely valuable to any uncertain situation. And this situation was definitely uncertain. It was first contact with a race of beings who had just achieved warp technology, but the Ferengi had been the welcoming committee. Usually this would make Renveer nervous about the new species’ first impression of the larger galactic community, but apparently the meeting had gone well and the Hilbon and the Ferengi had become fast friends. But then again, that also made Renveer nervous.
Initially reports on the culture of the species heavily emphasized their obsession with games. Mind puzzles, traps, tests of wit and ingenuity. Perhaps a bit pretentious of them to feel entitled to test older civilizations, but whatever challenge they had administered to the Feregni, apparently they had passed it. Now, Starfleet hoped to do the same, to start off on the right foot.
To that end, Renveer was attempting to compile an away team that was diverse in their thinking, but flexible enough to work together. Renveer was not a competitive person, but when diplomacy was on the line, he intended to win.
And yet, Renveer knew that many people were more creative than he knew. Solving number problems, riddles, playing strategic games, were all hobbies and pursuits that were not usually included in personnel files. So instead, he sent out a general inquiry:
“Attention Dresden crewmen rank Ensign an above. Please report to Lieutenant Commander Renveer’s office at your earliest convenience if you are interested in assisting with first contact with the Hilbon.”
