The doors to Engineering slid open and Dr. Drillek began looking quickly around for the CE or any of the Staff. He carried a PaDD in one hand and seemed a bit on edge.

Lena Rogers was fresh out of the Academy, but she knew that if she wanted to make it to Chief Engineer and maybe to Captain one day, she couldn’t shy away from the spotlight. She was the kind of person that knew exactly what she wanted and had a detailed plan on how to get it, and right now, as she saw Drillek waltz into Main Engineering, she saw her opportunity.

Tightening her ponytail more out of habitude than anything else, she crossed the bay in large strides. With a warm smile on her lips, she spoke to the newcomer. “Dr. Drillek. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Is there anything I can do for you?”

Drillek looked at her a koment and then shook his head, dismissing whatever thought had been there. “I was looking for the Chief Engineer, but I hope you can help, yes.” and he ha ded her the PaDD. Pointing at the display, he said “That, we believe, is a docking port to an u known alien vessel. That is also from what we can see our only way to access the ship or the station. So we, you and I, need to modify our umbilical docking clamp to fit that. And we need to do about an hour ago. Think you can help, Ensign?”

NEnsign Alexandra Ongsteadlea shook her head in disapproval from across engineering, watching the newly minted NEnsign Rodgers so eagerly approach the scientist. Ongsteadlea marched towards the pair, then stood over Rodgers’ shoulder to inspect the schematic as well. “Well we can certainly make it a docking port, if we try hard enough,” she stated dismissively. “Or we could always just suit up and space-walk it, knock on the door and hope they open the airlock.” She was half-joking. “But then again with NEsign Rodgers here in charge, I’m sure we’ll get that clamp fixed up in no time.” There was a hint of doubt and teasing challenge in Onsteadlea’s voice. She was not always the nicest coworker, especially to newer members of the crew, but she was a good engineer and she intended to help in any way she could.

Drillek looked from one to the other with the practiced gaze of someone who had directed engineers for a very long time. “I am glad to see that the Dresden has such motivated engineers. That being the case, why don’t you two assist me in getting the coupling modified. First, metallurgical scans of the port to make sure whatever it is magnetic. Two, modification of the physical clamps to accommodate the hatch. After that, one of you two lucky volunteers gets to stand on the bridge and direct the docking sequence. Now… let’s go.”

Rodgers had open her mouth to speak when Ongsteadlea had so rudely (in her opinion) interfered, challenging her opportunity to shine. But Lena was not someone who gave up that easily. If she did a good job and fell on Drillek’s good side, maybe he would be able to put in a good word for her wherever she happened to want to go next in her career. She couldn’t mess this up.

Lena glared at her crewmate for a moment, before smiling back to Drillek, as politely as possible. “I apologize for Ensign Ongsteadlea’s humor. Of course I… we… can help.” She stuttered before quickly correcting herself, walking up to the nearest vacant console and pulling up any information the Dresden was currently drawing from the alien ship so that they (or rather, she) could have a better idea of what they were working with before starting the metallurgical scans Drillek had just ordered them to run.

Ongsteadlea gave Lena a look behind her back that said “oh really?” She snorted in amusement and crossed the room to grab a toolkit. “Leave the physical modifications to me, Sir,” she said to Drillek. “I wouldn’t be caught dead fuddling around with scans when there’s real work to be done.” Another snide jab at Rodgers’ expense, but Ongsteadlea also sincerely believed that her talents were best used on the more physical aspects of the task at hand.

Drillek looked from one to the other and then shook his head. When egos get involved, triple check results. he thought to himself. “Excellent. Ensign Rogers, make sure we get detailed measurements for Ensign Onsteadlea. And Ensign Onsteadlea, make sure you fabricate to specifications.” he reminded them politely and turned to go the docking area to inpect the clamps. Pausing, he turned and looked at both of them.

“Oh, and make sure you work together. Since you two are designing the coupling, you are first through the umbilical to check stability and adhesion. You make it… you test it. If it fails…” and he made short sucking sound and smiled, “… right out into vacuum. You better be sure it holds. Ok, see you in about fifteen minutes!” and smiled and waved and walked out the door.

Ongsteadlea gulped despite herself. Doubting her abilities was unlike Alexandra, but then again it was not often that she was so pointedly threatened with imminent death should her efforts be sub-par. She watched the scientist leave engineering wordlessly before turning on her heel and marching to the docking mechanism. She did not address NEnsign Rodgers further, apparently more serious about focusing on the task at hand now. And she would follow Rodger’s specifications exactly, forgoing the usual improvisations that Ongsteadlea usually favored.

After a few moments of work, the executive officer’s voice rang through engineering: =/\= Renveer to engineering. Status report. =/\=
