Hsull had dropped off his carry bag in his quarters and stood outside the door to the counselors office. He took a deep breath and released it slowly. It wasn’t that he didn’t like counselors, he just didn’t fully trust them. Anyone who was always trying to poke around with your thoughts and emotions just seemed a bit too much to him. There was probably a good reason there were no Caitian counselors that he had ever heard of. Straightening his uniform he pressed the door chime.

BUMP to CNS

Bethany heard the chime and got up to close the door to Luna’s cage. Most people on board enjoyed Luna’s company but she never assumed. There were some people who didn’t like animals at all. She moved to the door and opened. “Please come in Warrant Officer Hsull. Would you like anything to drink or eat?”
Lt Gadi, CNS

” Thank you. If I could get a cup of coffee, extra cream no sugar, that would be fine.” Hsull noticed the cage and saw the small animal inside. ” I see you have a rabbit, that’s interesting, the medical officer has a dog. Are pets all that common on the Dresden ?”

Bethany walked over to the replicator, “Coffee, extra cream, no sugar.” Once it materialized she brought it over to him. “Please have a seat.” She reached for her own coffee on her desk and sat across from him. “Hmm let me think. The XO has a dog, and the marine CO does as well. Dogs actually seem to be the preferred bet on board. I’m the odd one out. Luna fits my personality well, and she keeps me company. People don’t exactly come hang out in the counseling offices.”
Lt Gadi, CNS

Hsull accepted the coffee, “Thank you very much.” He tested the temperature and took a large sip. “I don’t believe Caitians as a race generally keep pets, I may have to investigate that. I can see where a pet would be company.” Hsull took another sip of coffee, “I seem to have become addicted to this stuff. I had to figure out how to drink it though, having a basically carnivores mouth and teeth don’t make it easy, and it’s not socially acceptable to lap ones coffee up with your tongue.” Hsull gave the counselor a Caitian’s rendition of a grin, which was mostly just showing his teeth.

Bethany grinned, the Caitian smile not bothering her. “There are many types of pets to suit lots of personalities. As for the coffee I recommend you try all the different options in the ship’s computer database. Some are excellent and some are not so good. And I would say that socially acceptable would depend on the society, and if you are more comfortable lapping your coffee do so. It does others good to remember we all have different customs.” She took a long drink of her own coffee. “So what brings you to Dresden? Choice or orders?”
Lt Gadi, CNS

Hsull continued to enjoy the coffee, “Orders actually, I had gone about as far in rehab as I could and Star Fleet saw that the Dresden lacked a Tactical officer, so here I am, the new and the old hopefully melding into the present.” Hsull put the coffee down for a moment. “Counselor, I understand that you’re half Betazoid, does that help you in your evaluations ? I’ve been trained to block my emotions and thought to all but a direct mind meld, but I see no reason to do so here. So tell me what do you sense coming from me right now ?” Hsull did this as a test of sorts, the Counselor might prove to be an important asset in determining a tactical solution to a problem in the future. He thought of his family, his siblings and how long it had been since he had seen them.

Bethany sat her cup down as well and regarded the Warrant Officer. “Actually, it doesn’t. By Betazoid standards I don’t even test as telepathic or empathic. For me to sense anything it has to be very clear.” She sat for a moment concentrating on him. It was easier because he was willing to let her ‘hear.’ “You miss someone. Who it is I have no way of knowing. And curiosity, perhaps.” She took in his posture, facial expressions, and other body language. He was testing her, and she honestly didn’t mind. “My training as an observer would be of more use to you than my empathy. I worked and trained with Star Fleet Intelligence before coming to Dresden. I worked for them as a counselor, and that is where the majority of my experience lies.”
Lt Gadi, CNS

Hsull nodded agreement, “I’m glad to hear that, and I’m sure your talents will come in handy. Someone who is trained to observe often notices things that to others may seem insignificant but turn out to be the very clue that’s needed to make a decision or solve a problem.” Hsull picked up his coffee and took a sip. “I was thinking about my family and that I needed to contact them. They know I have a new assignment, but not where, now do you have any questions for me about any thing ?”

Hsull - TO

“I know you were injured in the line of duty and as you’ve said you just left rehab. I don’t like to pester officers. I believe we are all adult enough to recognize when we need help, physical, mental, or with our duties. You’ve been injured in the line of duty and for some it’s another day in the office, for others it’s life altering. So how are you feeling about what happened to you, your recovery, and returning to active duty?” It was meant as a blunt question. His reports from the medical facility showed he was cleared for duty. What she needed was to get to know him and have a base line for his personality.
Lt Gadi, CNS

Hsull continued to sip his coffee savoring the flavor. “I don’t have any hard feelings about what happened, I made a choice and the consequences were a result of that choice. My time in medical and rehab were necessary but I am more than glad to be back on the job. There isn’t a lot to occupy your mind in rehab, you’re so locked in on getting your body back in shape that your mind tends to atrophy, so to speak. I am very glad to be here and hope to be of use to the Captain and crew.”
