Protocol dictated that newly arrived Chief Intelligence Officer Belle Harper must be cleared for duty by the ship’s counselor. The counselor didn’t know it yet, but the bald gray creature with a terrifying beauty consider this a formality only and a complete wasted of time. Perhaps once, long ago, she would have been delighted to meet a new crewmate and excited to share intimate details of her life. That was no longer the case.

She stood outside the counselor’s office and activated the chime.

-Lieutenant Belle Harper, Chief Intelligence Officer

The Lt didn’t know it yet, but Bethany was quite used to people thinking she and her job was a waste of time. It was almost a rite of passage for officers to hate going to see the counselor for one reason or another. Bethany was far past being offended or frustrated by it. The door opened, “Please come in Lt.” There were only so many new officers and Bethany like medical was notified of who was coming on board. She had no scheduled appointments and the pips gave it away. It was a good guess that this was Harper, since one Lt Belle Harper was the only Lt scheduled new Lt arriving. “I’m Lt Gadi. Have a seat, water, coffee, something else?” Bethany took in the body language of the Lt. The woman screamed intelligence. So more of them, she shouldn’t be surprised. There was no way she and Holloway were the only two that would end up on board this ship. The office was somewhat sparse, crates stacked in the corner indicated that the counselor was still in the process of moving in. The desk was very neat, and that neatness hid how busy Bethany was. There were two comfortable arm chairs and two more standard ‘fleet’ chairs, depending on the person’s preference. The most unique thing in the room was the small animal cage and miniature fence attached to it against the far wall. A small blue Mini Rex rabbit was moving about in the area. Currently munching on a long apple peel.

If the quick and sharp response to the door chime was at all a surprise, you’d never know it. The doors slid open and Harper, looking like some kind of phantom, entered the room. She took three of four steps in and stopped, allowing the doors to ‘woosh’ shut behind her. She neither sounded off nor saluted as it seemed the counselor was determined to get started immediately. ‘All the better,’ Harper thought. ‘Let’s get it over and done with.’

“Nothing to drink, thank you. And I prefer to stand.” She took no notice of furnishings and never once glanced at the creature moving within the cage. She simply stared straight ahead, her expression giving nothing away.

Bethany came to some conclusion rather quickly. “I’m afraid you will have to sit, Lt Harper.” She wasn’t going to give her name that was fine, Bethany already knew. She waved to a small table in the corner behind the Lt. with a chair and a larger screen on the wall. “Have a seat Lt. You’ll be familiar with this.” She picked up two small devices from out of drawer and walked over. “I’ll afix these to your forehead and the computer will show you a series of images. These will record your brainwave patterns and the associations you make. It takes about 20 minutes. Have a seat, we’ll get started and get you out of here.” (Think the test Deanna Troi did on Data in the episode on Grave’s World). This particular test would determine if the personality was stable. For someone who was not eager to share or talk this test would tell Bethany if the personality was stable or if she needed to force the conversation. Everyone had secrets and issues they had to deal with. Bethany was skilled enough to know when to and not to push. Her gut told her right now was not the time to push the Lt unless the test said she wasn’t stable.

“If you insist, Counselor.” Harper moved to sit on the edge of the chair, back stiff. Both of her feet were planted firmly on the floor, her PaDD on her knees and her hands on the PaDD. She stared straight ahead and waited for the counselor to affix her gadgets to her head. “You may proceed with your test, but I must warn you, when my nanites detect the technology attempting to connect, they will seek out and destroy it.” She wondered how this bit of news would strike the counselor. Would she proceed? Harper could easily end this now by handing over the PaDD which contained orders from Fleet Admiral Kirkland stating that Belle Harper was to be cleared for duty regardless of the counselor’s findings, but she made no movement to do so. Something about the counselor’s insistence was… what?… amusing wasn’t the right word. Curious, Harper was curious to see how this scene played out.
