In the back of sickbay, away from the commotion in majors, Charlie was on her own, steadily working through the less serious cases. As she moved on to her next patient, Charlie could feel the painkiller starting to wear off. Pushing it aside she quickly scanned the young security officer in front of her who had a minor concussion and fractured ankle. He was drifting in and out of consciousness but stable. As she had another quick probe of her abdomen, she briefly thought about asking the CMO to check her over but she knew that Janvier was busy with a patient. As she turned back and administered a hypo to her patient, the young man’s eyes suddenly snapped open and he instinctively thrashed out in defence, catching Charlie on her injured side, before passing out again. She cried out in shock as one of her fractured ribs dislodged and punctured her lung, nicking her spleen on the way, and sent a violent shockwave of pain through her body.

From around the corner in the main sickbay, Enj’s ears suddenly pricked up and he let out a little whimper as he sat up and looked towards the minor treatment area, his canine intuition and senses picking up that something was wrong.

With no one else around, Charlie frantically gripped onto the bed as it suddenly got harder to breathe. She could feel all the energy draining out of her body as her heart began to slow and after a few moments she collapsed to her knees, still holding onto the bed. With a trembling hand, she went to reach for her comm badge but her vision was already starting to blur as she began to lose consciousness. As the strength left her arms she lost her grip on the biobed and slumped silently to the floor.

In the main sickbay, Enj suddenly jumped up and barked loudly as he ran over to Janvier and pawed her leg urgently. Looking up at her he barked again and with his teeth began pulling forcefully at her trouser leg.

Absorbed in her work Elaine had stopped paying much attention to Enj until he barked. She paused her work as she felt him tugging on her leg, realising he wasn’t going to stop when he barked a second time, she set her tools down. “What is it?” she asked, exhasperation clear in her voice. She was in the middle of treating a patient in the middle of a medical emergency. Now wasn’t a good time for him to be acting odd.

Noticing he’d got Janvier’s attention, Enj barked again and trotted a few paces away. He stopped and looked over his shoulder, one black and one white eye fixed on the CMO. When she didn’t follow he trotted back to where she stood and pulled at her trouser leg again before letting go and walking a little further.

Elaine wanted to roll her eyes. “Not now Enj, you can show me whatever it is you want to show me later,” she said firmly. Turning back to her patient and beginning to pick up her tools, resuming her work on her patient, thinking on how oddly Enj was behaving. He liked to misbehave but in an entertaining way rather than a distruptive one. He hadn’t tried to distract her from her work since he was a puppy. It must be the excitement she thought to herself, With intruders on the ship and so many people in sickbay. But any excuse for him that she could come up with went out the window, when Enj barked and took off running. She turned and mutter curses under her breath gave chase. Following him towards the back of Sickbay…

As Charlie drifted in and out of consciousness, her breathing steadily became more labored, almost as though she was having to breathe through a miniscule straw. As her eyes fluttered open momentarily, she felt the pain searing through her body again and she tried to call for help which just came out as a quivering moan. Knowing she didn’t have long before she slipped into unconsciousness again, she tried in vain to move, letting out a pained cry which was a little louder than the first, before collapsing back on the deck in exhaustion.

Enj stopped running and tilted his head to the side and whined as he heard Charlies first moan. Relieved, Elaine paused panting a little from the short sprint she’d just completed. She was going to need to work out a little more in the future. She wasn’t unfit per-say, but she would definitly need to get fitter if she wanted to keep up with Enj. Because she was paused, she was also able to hear Charlies second cry just like Enj. From her experice as both a doctor and her time on the Ixlilton she knew it was the cry of someone in need of help and her Doctor instincts took over.

As Enj took off again following the sound around the back of an occupied biobed a couple of paces away Elaine followed him quietly. Her tricorder in hand. It wasn’t long before she found the Ensign on the ground with Enj tentativly sniffing her face, giving the occassional soft lick here and there. “Good boy Enj,” she praised softly. From the angle she was standing at she couldn’t tell if Charlie was awake or unconscious and didn’t want to startle her if she was conscious, and risk aggrivating her injury.

“Ensign, can you hear me?” she asked as she carefully walked forward and knelt next to Charlie starting to scan. She should have treated the Ensign when she had the chance to earlier. Or at least scanned her so she’d know the extent of Charlies injury. It had been folly to have assumed that the injury wasn’t severe.

As Charlie began to drift into unconsciousness again, she felt an unusual warm breath on her face, followed by something that felt strangely like warm sandpaper. Her eyes fluttered open again to see Enj sniffing her. She thought she might have been hallucinating until she heard the comforting and familiar voice of Janvier. “…doctor…?” she murmured quietly, as she instinctively tried to sit up and instantly regretted it as pain shot through her body once again and she cried out and slumped back down on the deck. She could feel it getting harder to breathe and it terrified her. Looking up at the CMO with tears in her eyes, she muttered through raspy breaths, “…my chest…” Charlie felt helpless, out of control, and she knew there was nothing she could do about it.

Scans would show that Bailey had 3 broken ribs, one of which had become dislodged and punctured her lung, causing it to collapse. She was bleeding from her spleen and a small laceration in her liver, and she had a badly bruised kidney which was struggling to keep up with the blood loss from her internal injuries. Her oxygen levels were dropping quickly and her heart rate and blood pressure were getting dangerously low.

Dr Bailey

“I need you to stay calm and don’t try to move. You have a punctured lung, and some internal damage.” Janvier bit her lip knowing that this wouldn’t have become a problem if she had treated Charlie in the first place. Tears of guilt and worry welled in her eyes so that she turned away quickly so that Charlie wouldn’t see her face. She stood up and busied herself preparing a hypospray using the menial task to get her emotions under control. She needed to focus on her task, and letting her emotions get the better of her wasn’t going to help anyone. Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile on her face and knelt back by Charlies side. “I have some Bicaridine mixed with Inaprovaline which will help with the pain and hopefully stabalise your internal bleeding” she explained as she worked. She didn’t need to explain what she was doing, but the talking helped keep her from focusing on her worry for her patient. As she scanned to make sure the medication was having it’s desired effect

Charlie nodded slowly as she tried to stay calm and follow Janvier’s advice. She had suspected the punctured lung from the tightness in her chest but she was afraid of how much damage it had done. As the medication quickly got to work she took a couple of panicked breaths.

“You need to take slow breaths, and as deep as you can without any pain.” Hopefully the deep breathing would elevate her blood oxygen levels a little and give Charlie something to focus on. Enj nuzzled Charlies face again, and gave it a small lick as if to show his own support.

Charlie gradually began to relax a little and slow her breathing, comforted by Enj’s presence. As the pain eased off a little, she began to feel clammy and nauseous. As sweat trickled down her forehead, Charlie felt her body shiver from shock and she instinctively reached a trembling hand out towards Janvier as she tentatively asked, “…is it serious…?” In truth, she was already fairly sure of the answer but she hoped she was wrong.

A look of pain crossed over Janviers face, and she all but dropped the tricorder to the side as she grabbed the other doctors hand and gave it a gentle reassuring squeeze. “You’re going to be fine,” she said by way of answer, “But as soon as your vitals are more stable, I may need to operate to repair the tear in your lungs.” She bit her lip again, she could feel Charlie’s body shivering and that worried her. Giving Charlies hand a gentle squeeze she used her spare hand to pick up the discarded tricorder, to check Charlies vitals. Enj looked up at the movement and wagged his tail from where he was curled up next to Charlie.

Charlie squeezed Janvier’s hand a little tighter than she had intended as she gulped and nodded at the thought of surgery. As her body shivered, Charlie felt weak as her eyelids began to droop. Not wanting to lose consciousness, she focussed on Enj and gave a weak smile as he wagged his tail. Scans showed that Charlie’s body was going into shock. Although the bleeding had now slowed, she had lost a lot of blood already and her pulse was beginning to weaken as her blood pressure dropped.

Keeping her eyes on Enj, Charlie whispered to Janvier. “…I’m scared…” in a barely audible voice.

Enj whined as he sensed Charlies blood pressure dropping. Elaine glanced at him, and through the guilt and worry over the younger officer, a touch of pride filled her when she looked at her dog. If it hadn’t been for Enj she would never have found Charlie. She would have to replicate him one of those big juicy bones he liked as a reward once she knew Charlie would be okay.

“Focus on something else,” Elaine said as she tried to subtly glance at the reading on her scanner. Her face falling when it confirmed that the Ensign was indeed falling into shock. Even with all the advanced technology in Sickbay she wasn’t going to be able to operate on Bailey while she was in shock. It was too dangerous “Tell us something about yourself,” she suggested hurridly, desperate to keep Charlie conscious until she was sure the shock was stabalised, “A favourite, person or place or memory maybe. Or something nobody knows about you.”

Gently prying Charlie’s hand out of her own, Elaine carefully stood up to fill up a hypospray to treat the other doctors shock. When she turned around to administer the solution, Enj had moved around to where she had been kneeling and was happily curled into Charlies side. Rather than move him, Elaine leant over him and administered the hypospray.

As Charlie felt the warmth of Enj snuggled up to her she let out soft sigh as she thought about Elaine’s question. One memory rang through as clear as day as she thought. “…my sister…” she started, her speech a little slurred. “…she got married…” Charlie whispered as she desperately tried to keep hold of the memory, knowing she needed to stay awake. All she wanted to do was sleep but she fought against it. She let out a little whimper as she shifted position and she quickly clenched her jaw. “…his name…is Renard…” she cried as she pushed the pain aside. “…do you…have any…” she muttered as she gently rested her hand on Enj’s head and softly stroked him.

Janvier stiffened. It was such an innocent question but one that hit an old sore spot with her. “I’ve never met my siblings,” she said, harsher than she liked, but with her emotions already so close to the surface, the old hurt of being abandoned by both her parents while they created new lives for themselves was quick to rise too. As the Saline that she had administered entered Charlies system, Elaine stood up and flagged down a passing nurse. “I need a couple of blood bags of Ensign Bailey’s blood type.” she ordered, “And get someone to prep an operating table, she has internal injuries that need stabalising asap.”

The nurse nodded and took off immediately to do as had been requested of her. Elaine sighed and turned back to her patient, “I’ve got a blood transfusion for you on it’s way.” she informed softly, crouching next to Charlie again. “I grew up with my cousin May,” she said after a moment, “She was practically a sister to me growing up. She’s the one who gave me Enj actually,” she chuckled, reaching over to give Enj a fond scratch behind the ear.

Charlie smiled at Enj again as she gently stroked him on the head. “I’m glad she did…” she replied softly as she wondered what would have happened if Enj hadn’t come to find her. “I think I owe him one…” she added quietly.

“What was your sisters wedding like?” Elaine had never been to a wedding before. Her grandmother had sworn never to remarry when Elaine’s grandfather passed away, and Elaines father hadn’t invited her to his wedding.

Charlie closed her eyes as she tried to remember through the fogginess in her head. “It was very grand…Renard comes from a very esteemed family…” she smiled as she remembered the grandiose reception and feeling a little confused as to why one needed 7 sets of cutlery for one meal. She rubbed her eyes as she tried to stay conscious. “I’m feeling a little fuzzy…” she muttered.
